I could be wrong, but I would bet that pugs make up a majority of the player base. Even if they don't there are many who would rather just play the game than sit around half the night in a TS Channel. That is why I pug almost elusively now. I don't care about win/loss, I just want to play matches. In BoT 1 I played IS, in BoT 2 I played Clan, and in BoT 3 I am currently playing IS. In all cases while pugging as IS my wait time has been less than 2 minutes from the time I click the fight button to dropping. When I played Clan in BoT 2 it was closer to 15-20 min wait times and sometime much longer.
At one point I was in a unit but quit as getting drops also took to long. You hang out chatting, and if you are not one of the regulars you are normally suck there waiting for the next drop. The number of times I heard you'll go on the next one was ridiculous. Same is true with you join a random TS channel in my experience. PGI tried to help with the LFG addition several years ago, but lets face it no one uses that and truth be told I am not ever sure it works.
Besides, there are a lot of pugs who actually know how to play this game. Yes there are many who don't, but there are also a lot of units that are just a clueless. I have run across several in the current event.
To make a statement like that and basically say eliminate pugs, you really mean that anyone who doesn't know how to play should be eliminated from the event. If that ever happens I would think the game would die soon after.

yeah thats the rub... you can lead a horse to water, show him the water, splash it in his face, but you can't make him GROUP THE F' UP, COORDINATE AND BRING LOGICIAL MECH LOADOUTS...
What I mean by this is that no matter how much more effective it is to do these things... people are going to do their own thing. So if you want to win, do the things that will give you the best chance of winning, starting with grouping up. If you don't care about winning, carry on...

This has been a pretty good event. I'm normally a QP player because regular FP matches take too long. I have competing priorities, so when I have time to play, it's usually 30 minutes, tops.
The rewards are nice, even if acquiring felt a little convoluted at first. Like most events, it makes more sense once you start racking up matches and seeing how the XP, match score, etc. meters start filling up. Having Active Premium Time as one of the easier to get rewards is a brilliant way of getting more casual people to play. Give whoever came up with that a pat on the back. Also, rewarding large number of supply cache keys, mechbays, and cosmetics instead of pure MC is great idea. Don't get me wrong, I like MC and think it should be a reward, but if all I was going to do with it was buy a warhorn or mechay, then go ahead and just give me the item instead of the MC.
IS is getting hilariously rolled in regular FP. Every time I've played so far, it's been Defend/Siege, which is okay, in a way. At least I know what mechs to bring to the fight.

Scouting mode has been a nice tug of war. Lots of exciting matches. Crazy 130+ kph dogfights and brutal brawls. I've discovered two more mediums in my mechay that work well (for me) in this mode. So, going forward, I'll probably be doing more scouting when events aren't drawing my attention elsewhere.
As much as I hate to endorse arbitrary "balancing" efforts, I feel that the sideways ban on Stormcrows has actually created a decent Scouting environment. I'd feel bad about the tonnage limit except that Hunchback IIC, Huntsmen, and Novas can still pack a nasty punch, and Shadow Cats and Cheetahs are as annoying as ever.
Curiously, I've seen lots of pilots Scouting with Trial mechs (especially the Phoenix Hawk and Jenner IIC). I have to assume that either they're new(ish) and don't feel that they don't have a good scouting mech or they're chasing that champion XP bonus. My only objection to Trial mechs in this case is the lack of Artillery/Air Strikes and UAV consumables.
Regardless of mode, Teamwork is OP and can't be (accurately) measured by metrics. To paraphrase, an ounce of communication is worth a pound of tryhard. Or something like that.

P.S. Looking forward to New Tech and a more level playing field that is (hopefully) free of arbitrary tonnage limits.

I'm looking forward to the intense last hours which will decide the victor and as IS has shown, they're more than capable to push the bar back within hours.

Making that bring more dynamic in game and also give players ability to play against same tech enemy in battle based on skill, not tech difference.
Not a tonnage change, not a nerfing clans or unnecessary armor buffing IS - just make possibility to fight against same tech enemy between events and lore based wars.
That give new players better understanding of tactic and maps. That give time to know weak and strong side of each mech. Also that make possible have fun from battles.
Hope someone from company bring that part of FP into live sometimes.

While groups can do well, so can pug drops. I have had some wins, losses and a mix of stomping's in both. I am fighting IS this time as last two times we fought with Clans.
The key is to
- Use quick comms and your push to talk.
- Call targets and weak points/load outs.
- Do not overextend on defense. Only push out if your mech is toast (out of ammo, cored, or stick) and instead of ejecting you can get some intel for team.
- Do not try tricky plays as Clan have radar bonus so they can see you.
- MOST IMPORTANT DO NOT TRY TRADING LONG RANGE FIRE WITH CLAN, IS is better with brawl and I have never seen a IS win in long range game.
- And if you out of ammo, but have Armour shield the guy who has weapons and no Armour.

I've had 18 invasion games so far, been stomped (hard) twice. When I drop, I either drop solo or in a group with one or two more friends, so basically pugging it. Not counting the stomps, I think I've been on the winning team half of the time. Most of the times that we lose, it's because we're not as good at communicating as the enemy team is.
Having played mostly clan in FP before, I've noticed that clan pugs are better at using the ingame voip overall. There's also usually more players who are willing to take charge, which makes all the difference.
A half decent dropcaller is better than no dropcaller at all.
As for scouting, the majority of my games (15-20 or so) have been wins. Atleast 3/4 in favour of the IS.
When it comes to the complaining about not being able to call out targets on account of every clanner running ECM, ever heard of UAVs? And no, they dont have a range of 1km, but you shouldn't be bothered with calling targets at that distance, because the clanners will outgun you. When you're in skirmish/brawling range (50-500m), the clanners will be too busy torso twisting away from your furious alphas to shoot down your UAVs.
Also, as has been mentioned before, if you look at the tug of war, it's a clan stompfest, but if you look at the total scores for every faction, it's actually rather close.
tldr:
1) Communicate
2) Don't be the ****** who starts to whine on comms or textchat when you see more then two ppl with unit tags on the opposing team. Defeatism before the first shots have even been fired is just tiresome.
3) Win or lose, if it was a good game, say so, don't cry about it. Be gracious both in victory and defeat.

Defending at least somewhat gives the losers a chance to push out and a slight advantage
let's be honest though
If you want MORE c-bills and MORE MC ,join smoke jaguar for the most rewards even if your just a average or below average player
I don't think any other event has made me more demoralized in pgi history
Im okay with losing and constant 100% for clans but just knowing that remaining loyal to IS also means get lower payouts in the event really just ruins it combined with the easy to-use clan meta in all the FW matches AND that all my IS buddies switched to clans just for event

Nevermind, did the silly 400 just in time in one Invasion and one scouting match.
