So if someone asked if I would watch an BT Anime that is similar in story to the novels, yes why not?
Would you ask me if I would watch the mentioned "young males hunting skirts in Mechschool" then definitly not.

Point in example, the TIE fighter short film on YouTube.

I wanna see that cotpit view as a cannon shell blasts through the head armor and splats the pilot or like that gruesome scene where that child soldier was crushed to death in his cotpit.
Almost everyone that dies in that show goes out in a messy way
The combat sounds are really meaty in it too.

Battletech is such a diverse setting that there are a million stories that can be told. They could go Game of Thrones route with deception and political intrigue, mixed with badass battles. Or they could keep it simple. Tell the story of someone growing up in a merc unit and developing into their own. SO many possibilities.

Why you gotta force me to go Steiner now?
But seriously, as long as the right studio/writers get brought in I'm perfectly ok with this. A more serious/gritty series could work well, just stay clear of the harem anime and clear of younger audience targeting. There are plenty of shows that do this [genre] well, so I don't see why not battletech.

Common misconception about anime (I don't blame you). Anime is just another form of media, kinda like movies and cartoons. You wouldn't necessarily call something like South Park or Happy Tree Friends as something a child should watch, now would you?. Besides, it's the internet;
In case you didn't know, there already was a BattleTech animated series, I don't see what's wrong of doing another BT series on a different art style
This may be true, but when the versions posted constantly are utter tripe, bottom of the barrel stupid versions of anime.....it's hard to remember.
And even Animes that started GREAT, like the original Macross? Have all devolved into utter stupid crap.
We want to talk about Battletech getting back to it's "roots". Well firstly it's roots, were always westernized, taking the anime robots, and removing the kung fu agility, etc. Any Mecha-Fu in Battletech crept back in during the late 90s in the desperate bid to retain customers.
We want to talk anime? Fine.
Macross. Moespeada. Votoms. Fang of the Sun Dougram. Patlabor. Megazone 23. Dominion Tank Police. Venus Wars. Akira. Ghost in the Shell. Appleseed. Even gundam 08 ms team (as opposed to pretty much every other gundam title)
Let's talk good scifi anime, not this sailor moon meets evangelion meets dragonball crap the modern kiddies seem to think is some great high brow entertainment.
Take that cute mascot, crossdressing, kiddie porn crap people watch today and blow it down the toilet.

Anyway, if a battletech anime series was made, it would have do away with the overabundant "generic moeblobs slice of life" style and go for a more realistic style, like Jin-Roh, Patlabor or GiTS.
Well, yes, of course there should be a beach episode, but only as a backdrop/excuse for an attack by frogmen and battle armor, coming out of the waves and opening fire.
Then again, a "game of thrones in space" style series with real actors might work better.
The problem with this (last point) is if it gets a low budget (which it probably would) it will turn out horribly, [garbage cgi blending] anime can generally pull through even with a lower budget... at least that would be my fear.

What I meant, was creating animated series using actual BT-lore.
Not yet another comedy-harem MYPANTIESGETWETSIRROSHAK.
We had BT-series in 90th, but they flopped due bad audience targeting.
Too complex for kids, too childish for BT-fans.
Anime instead could be any way you want.
You just just translating your silly stereotypes, but no, there are no age restrictions in animation and anime is not only CGDCT.
and so on...
btw, last decade, western franchises tried to have an anime-adaptations: Mass Effect, Dragon Age and others.
Why not to haw our own Battletech series?!

Though the best Option would be western CGI style, as battletech has definitely become more western and even more realistic over the years, then over the top movements in eastern animation styles. Couple of the best shows to pull from for reference would be Transformers Prime, Star Wars: Clone Wars/ Rebels.
TF:P
SWCW
Gundam Iron blooded Orphans (Spoiler if you haven't touched season 2)
Gundam Thunderbolt

Wait what? Seriously?
GTF out of here! I am no lore nerd but mixing this childish anime sh*t with this game would be atrocious.
This game at least has a tiny bit of seriousness left to apeal to it's ancient (whale) customers.
Next thing you want is BTech Hentai version aren't you? Be honest !
This post really reminds me of one thread when PGI decides to add a new background music to MWO one day.
"This heavy metal music does not fit nor serious enough for this game!"
It doesn't take that long for someone to spam the youtube links of Mech Warrior 2 OST.
This..... "childish anime sh*t" you hate has extremely strong influence on quite a lot of designs of the mechs we have today, to the point there were several copyright disputes in the past.
Read this Sarna article : http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Unseen
I mean..... just look at the Phoenix Hawk. It's literally anime mecha to the root. There are a lot of anime mechs than you'd like to think.

That one is very well done. Drawn and animated over 4 years' worth of weekends !
For those who haven't seen it
Beside that, anyone rembering "Grave of the fireflys"? Also a greate anime thats very seriouse.
Lets say someone would say he is doing a BT-Series, animated, real, CGI, whatever, what timeline would you prefer?
I would like to see the beginnings again, the inner fighting of the greate houses and against each other.
Or go the other extrem and go to the Dark Age and the start of the conflicts there.
Beside that a mini series about the different units would be nice. Espacialy the Grey Death Legion and Wolfs Dragoons.
I wouldn't even mind if they do just a 1:1 retelling of the novels.

Harmony Gold, unfortunately, does not.
But they can't take all the blame, Jordan Weisman kinda stole the designs without asking.
