I'm sorry to hear you had such a toxic experience, and you were right to report the players; one of the hardest things to overcome for me when I first started was how toxic the community can be and how unsupportive of new players some people are in-game (though then I discovered some online guides and youtubers who are really informative, check out Kanajashi, Molten Metal, and M4J35T1C on youtube if you haven't already).
The only thing I would disagree with you is a minor discrepency in terms of role; if you play as an assault mech, I believe that it is fair to ask you to be at or near the front lines, drawing agro and tanking damage, as the class you chose is much better suited to that role than other classes; similarly, if you are a light mech, it is also fair to ask you to do some scouting, for many of the same reasons.
To use a real world analogy, imagine we are playing a game of basketball. You are well in your rights to ask the tallest player on your team to guard the tallest player on the opposing team, as their physical attributes give them a chance while shorter players will just get dunked on. Now, can you force the tallest player to do that? No, of course not, but you would be justifiably upset when the game ended and the opposing team's tallest player completely dominated the court because no one of his size was guarding him (especially if the tallest player on your team had circles run around him by a smaller, more agile player).
Always remember, that while you have both the right and the ability to play any way you like, the game forces us into teams and it is in everyone's best interest to work together and cooperate.
Thank you for understanding.
I have to disagree about determining "roles" though.. You see, I believe "roles" are not determined by weight. Not in MWO.
Yes in single player MW games, but not MWO.
Why? Cose' MWO is a game where the biggest threat to an Assault is not another assault, but a lowly light. Any mech can kill any other mech in this game, with enough skill, teamwork and a bit of luck.
Assaults don't exist solely to negate enemy assaults. That train left the station back in closed beta.
Instead, roles are determined by loadout and skill placement. They are "Scout", "Brawler", "Sniper" and "Support".
The responsibility of each I would describe thus:
"Scout" - usually a light mech, but sometimes also fast medium. Its job is to find the enemy, pop UAV's, get and hold locks, harass enemy slow movers and protect against other scouts. In D&D terms, they are the Rogue.
"Brawler" - Frontline unit who's job is to engage the enemy directly, and deal direct damage, assisted by support and scouts. They are the main pushers and common unit. In D&D terms, they are the "Fighter"
"Sniper" - Long range damage unit, who's job is to soften up targets from long range and harass them, without taking damage themselves, or eliminate them completely, all while remaining unseen. In D&D terms, they are the "Sorcerer"
"Support" - Akin to artillery, support's job is to hammer the enemy hard when possible, control their movement and tactical options, and provide help to brawlers and sometimes scouts. In D&D terms, they are the "Wizard", hurling fireballs and entangling spells.
LRM boats fit the "support" role, and regardless of their size, THAT is their job.. The fact that they are assault class mechs sometimes only means they can deal out alot more punishment and take alot more damage themselves, before being taken out.
So, drop the illusion that "all assaults should be brawlers".
As long as I can kill a Direwolf with two alphas to the back form an Arctic Cheetah or a Locust, weight means absolutely nothing in this game.
P.S.
I've been playing my Supernova SNV-A alot lately. I don't know about others, but using its LRMs, I now regularly have matches in which I kill (and by kill I mean KMDD) other assaults, and lights equally.
My favorite kills include (but are not limited to):
1) An Atlas that tries to rush me
2) A locust that tries to rush me
3) An SRM boat mech.
4) An Irondome mech (3 AMS + ECM carriers)
5) Another SNV-A LRM boat.
I have killed all of these not once, but many times, often in the same match, and my damage / kill / KMDD output has become such that I could never match it in a brawler, and also such that I'm often the most damaging mech in the whole match (including enemy stats) by a landslide. (sometimes literally double damage of the next best guy).
My personal best has become absurd when it comes to QP (I have yet to test my 2 x SNV-A + 2 x ACH-PRIME dropdeck without being bullied and harrased).
So yeah.. I'm not gonna stop just cose' someone wants me to play a brawler I'm not nearly as good with.
