The fact that you think good sportsmanship is different if you are getting paid versus when you are not says all we need to know about you.

And the fact that you can't see a difference indicates you probably never played sports anyways, so what do you know? Am I supposed to be shaking my friends hand and thanking my sponsors after a casual game of squash? Should i be bowing before playing catch? Lmao.

Nevermind that you're comparing sports to games- where "normal social rules" can be ignored as a process of playing. Suggesting rules of sportsmanship even apply is intrinsically suspect since there isnt really a single codified "right" way to play. The framework of MWO suggests competition, but at the same time you'll have people that defy this by bringing troll builds or that play hide and seek- valid forms of play unless they actually get banned for it. You ultimately cannot make a direct comparison to sport because so many elements are left ambiguous to give room for play.

In any case, if you assume we're all in competition, then it's more like traffic because you're not even interacting long enough for any show of respect to be meaningful. Most people are ultimately just grinding cbills or xp, and many don't care whether they win or lose. GGing some noob in a stock unskilled Centurion from the cockpit of your optimized MAD-IIC is like GGing the guy in the slow lane that's just trying to get home.

Sportsmanship is about respect, and respect is more than a series of empty gestures (they are empty). Deferring to the loser on how to proceed is respecting their right to feel differently about the outcome- if they don't care, that's fine! If they're upset, I dont think shaming them into "good sportsmanship" solves anything. If they want to congratulate us on a win, then I'd thank them for the good match. I don't really know what you're trying to imply this says about me, because I think It's pretty reasonable.

So this comes up every once in while, so I wanted to take a minute to express how I feel about it.

When someone says "GG" after a match, their motives might not be the same as yours.

For some people, like myself, it's an expression of mutual respect. It is not a review of the relative quality of the match.
For some people it is a validation that they found the game good, interesting or in other ways generally worthwhile in retrospect.

If you swing one way and not the other, please have the common courtesy to not spew vitriol into chat because the way in which one player uses it differs from yours.

I say goodbye to customer support by saying "thanks, you've been great" even when they've just been acceptable at best. It costs me nothing and it leaves us all intact as a person at the end of a conversation. This is for the most part a game with a relatively high average age and sometimes it wouldn't hurt to conduct ourselves accordingly.

I have no ownership over you not having enjoyed a match and you have no ownership over when I say gg.

The same obviously goes for similar expressions of courtesy. Don't be an ***.

It's pretty much always the winning team typing the "gg", and that says more than anything anyone can come up with to excuse it in a forum post.

Huh, look what happened.

I just went through 13 pages of vicious facebiting and frankly this is what it boils down to.

Some people think sportsmanship is to be earned.
Some people think sportsmanship is stupid because it's a game of stompy robots, not the NBA.
Some people think that when a game is one sided, sportsmanship is "rubbing it in"
Some people think that this is way too much talk about a little show of whatever it is you want to show.
Some people think GG is a review.

The point I tried to make is that it shouldn't matter what it means to you. It really doesn't.

What matters is that you don't get to decide what it means to others, at least not to the point where you should be offended by it.

I'm not clear what the issue is here unless you would like to accept that you are a hypocrite.

If you are not happy with people interpreting "gg" as something other than sportsmanship, why do you have a problem with people trying to "decide what it means to others" when their interpretation is different?

Similarly, if it "shouldn't matter what it means to you", then why make this thread in the first place, as you clearly appear to be hung up on it, and therefore it matters to you?

So which is it?

Is there a problem that we don't all share a hive mind?

Or is it a non-issue, and potatoes will be potatoes, and therefore whats the point of this thread?

The problem is that this, agewise, is probably one of the oldest communities in gaming outside of full-sim games.
I think with all the adults around nobody should feel compelled to open their mic when someone types gg at the end of a match and offer their hurt emotional state about the audacity of someone extending a handshake after a game they clearly didn't enjoy, respect or otherwise disapprove of.
Also, the word potato comes up a lot if you do that on the receiving end of a stomp.

It's just an appeal to decency and I never get to exorcise this demon because the aftergame section of a match obviously can't clarify that enough.

I've been gaming online since the mid 90's and when it comes to competitive play, this is the way things have always been, are now, and always will be.

This community is par for the course when it comes to reactions etc, and age really has nothing to do with it.

It seems to me that if you are upset about others being upset at how you view the use of "gg" then you need to think about why you are buying into other people's interpretations of "gg" on an emotional level.

Ultimately, gaming is an outlet, and the salt must flow.

I view "gg" after a 12-2 roll as an insult, if issued from the winning team.

12-2 isn't a good game.

I do use "GG" sometimes after my team stomp the enemy in a 12-0 match, but only to the team channel. Because, to be honest, while it wasn't a balanced game it might still have been a Good Game where the blue team coordinated their attacks well, supported eachother and communicated. That IS a Good game, no matter the end results.

It also can mean "Get Good" so can easily be an insult. Honestly it is a horrible expression to use because its meaning is very ambiguous. If you think it was a good game, just take a extra few seconds and type "Good Game".

Ever seen a pickup game of basketball at a local gym? Do those unofficial players shake hands after the game or not?

And they prolly have more to say to each other while doing it.. some friendly, some not.. while at a little league game u shook hands and spoke the words you were told to just like everyone else.. Whos got more sportsmanship? the kids doing what they are told, or the guys who do out of respect and competition..

Like i've said its in the sentiment. Which is one thing that gg cant really express... it can only express gg.. And with nothing else along with it there is no meaning.. theres no smile with the handshake.. no damn my teeth are still rattling from that hit u gave me.. Theres no expression or feeling in it..

So many people say things here in thier own ways. It shows people may think whatever they think when they do GG.. But in reality its only what they think.. As everyone else will think what they will.. Without context or expression gg shows nothing in reality..

I'll take any words over GG for the most part as it shows more expression. Expression leads to interaction, then things grow and get better than GG and run.

I use fu on stomps that end with gg on the 0-12's as it is no way in hell a good game or close game especially for the side that just got their collective butt probed. An ending kill score of 6 or below for the loosing team doesn't get a gg either. I might call out a player in all chat that put up a good battle or an extended encounter fighting that pilot for a minute or more before one of us deciding to run back to our respective team congratulating them on their hard fought fight.

Being middle tier I fight everyone eventually and I can spot the ones that have that better-than-you attitude yet lack the skills to back it up. I could name them but you know the whole coc thing against it. There are plenty of those so called 'great players' who mouth off in team and all chat once they die bad mouthing everyone blaming 'their' team yet proudly proclaim their greatness at the start of a match.

Players that put up decent fights and aren't aholes earn my respect. A pilot who only does 200-400 and gets kills is an ok pilot to me as they contributed more than one who did 600 or more and got no kills.

There is no context to "GG".

Good song choice - thanks Borderlands (and I suppose Lisa Foiles) for introducing me to Cage The Elephant!

which is why people getting their panties wadded over it makes no sense...in a simple GG there is no context...except what the reader puts into it themselves. And if they always jump to a negative connotation first...that speaks volumes about that person.

"GGclose" provides it's own context. GGClothes, does, too......

GG.... can be taken many ways and to simply assume the person posting it is mocking you? Means one is very very insecure in their place in life.

To simply assume the person saying "GG" is being friendly is to be naive.

...

No, I don't believe that statement, but it holds as much weight as yours.

How I take "GG" is, as noted, highly contextual. This is a problem for some people, for some reason.
