strange but related question:

a neighbor greets you with a "how's your day?" in the hallway. do you:
1) just say "good. you?" and expect a reply of "good." before continuing your ways, or do you
2) think what he/she wants is to stop and discuss how good or bad your day actually is?

to me, "gg" is the former. it's just a formality. not real interaction. ants bumping.

which leads to this:

do people who think it "give rise to negative feelings/hostility" stop and hold meaningful conversations with their neighbor in the hall? cos that's weird to me. and i think it'll be weird for my neighbor too.

You may well say that, but I don't see anyone arguing against that.
Everyone have a responsibility for their own feelings. But, no person have perfect ability to exercise control over their mind and feelings, and as such most grown up people have the ability to realize how certain words in a certain context will very likely will be interpreted.
Not all people have this ability though, I guess most notably this is one symptom on the autism spectrum.

And even if one has that ability there may be a lack of empathy of actually caring about fellow human beings and as such show some self restraint as to what one says in certain situations.

I don't think anyone here assumes the worst about everything and everyone, life just isn't that black and white that you either have to always assume the worst or the best, or anything at all for that matter.

But I would say that to most people it comes natural to infer a meaning of, and intent behind, words based on their context.

I'd most likely do 1, but there is a big difference of context, also meeting in person you can see facial expression and hear the tone of voice which makes all the difference.

I would interpret that "how's your day?" quite differently if that neighbor had just gotten me evicted.

A simple "gg" at the end of a 12-0 stomp usually does the trick with this type. If you touch their safespaces expect to hear screeches which sound something like REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. (headphone warning)

So I'm not going to read 16 pages this just to give my opinion. So sorry if this has already been said.

As someone from a starcraft back ground it was considered "Bad mannered" to say GG as the winning player before the player who is losing or lost. Usually you let the opponent who lost say GG first. However like people have said its considered the after game handshake so not saying GG when you lose is also considered "bad mannered".
So coming from that background I get really....frustrated when its a 0/2-12 match and my opponents say GG.
I feel its always a good grace kind of deal to let the opponent say it first, because of course it was a good game for you when you roll the enemy team, it just feels like your adding more salt to the wound.

"Alright?" where I live is slang for "Hello" and yet, I have started responding not with a simple "Alright!" but with "Yes (or no), you?"

I have turned a simple greeting into a (hopefully) more meaningful exchange, and I don't remember when or why I started to do it.

I can't decide if I'm trying to be annoying or actually want to have a conversation.

most people aren't interested in a meaningful exchange in the hallway though. most of the time, it's just an "ant bump", a formality. just like "gg" at the end of a match.

it's not really an invitation to start dissecting the match or a commentary on how the teams actually played.

Once upon a time, a long time ago, I was a punkass kid that played a lot of StarCraft. I had a nasty habit of saying "gl hf" at the beginning of every game, which seemed innocuous enough. But I never meant good luck to them, what I really meant was "good luck... you'll need it, have fun while I teabag your ***!"

When I ended up winning, I would say "gg" and sometimes even say it well before my opponent lost--I meant it in a disparaging way.

12-2 isn't a good game, it is a bad game, that likely wasn't fun for the other team, either because they sucked(quite likely were full of bad players), or the matchmaker hosed the game. Usually it is a combination of the two because bad players shouldn't be stacked together, as they end up cowering behind rocks and wait to die.

So if you 12-2 another team, the best thing to say is nothing at all. And if you really feel the urge to say something, trash talk the matchmaker, or show empathy by saying "tough break." You get the idea.


p.s. An alternative for "gl hf" might be ESAD. It is an acronym. And it means something. But at least it's honest...

Sorry I'll say GG whenever. if I get rolled, or we roll them. It doesn't matter to me. Also feelings do not matter either. If someone is salty because I said GG, its on them lol.
