Well, most of them are kind of born into the role. It's not like being an Elemental is a judgement call.

Lincoln Osis was an idiot, though.

Large, boxy, locked XL engine.

70 kph, high mounted hardpoints. Also, how boxy it is will depend on the art team.

Its like you forgot that XL assaults used to be a thing. Its really not the end of the world, and since it has a locked XL engine it can be balanced accordingly.

I'd really like to see the Men Shen (and would actually pay for it), though I fear we will only get the "popular" ones like Sunder, Templar and Hauptmann.

On a side note, the locked XL engines could be mitigated by a omnipod set bonus like "Behaves like a Clan XL engine".

I guess that might sort of be possible, given that the main thing we need to change is an XML entry SidesToDie (change from 1 to 2).

However, I think it's weird to given Omnis special engine rules that regular IS mechs can't benefit from, and relying on set bonuses means that you have to completely gimp your firepower to get it. IS Omnis generally have far worse stock hardpoints than Clan Omnis.

If PGI doesn't want to directly adjust engines, I think that ST armor quirks are sufficient for this. No it's not the same as surviving an ST loss, but the end result of staying alive longer is still achieved.

I don't expect IS omnis in game until PGI runs out of solid Battlemechs to package. The Clans have a much smaller roster of well known mechs, and exhausted the most famous ones in within the first three Clan Waves, so IIC and Clan Battlemechs became a necessity for release sooner than IS Omnis.

It is weird, no doubt, and might probably set a dangerous precedent for future 'Mechs.
On the other hand, the set bonus could be activated with any given number of omnipods and it would ensure the same minimum level of survival once the packs are sold for c-bills (i.e. when the nerfhammer hits).

most of them field an XL, wonder if IS getting omnis may change PGI's stance towards Omnimech construction rules. Ther eis no advantage for any omnimech aside the hgiher chance to have better selfmade hardpoint combinations, but any Battlemech having good hardpoint combination is just superior to any omnimechs construction possibilities.

Re: XLs

I really don't think it is a problem. Assault Mechs admittedly run better with LFE, but even assaults with XL engines can work if speed, firepower, and geometry are good enough. Conversely XLs on medium and heavy are only a liability if speed and geometry are bad. I would not run the Men Shen or the Black Hawk-KU with an LFE even if I could.

Yes, a few IS Omnis will suffer from their design choices and locked equipment. The Avatar e.g. is too slow and too big to mount an XL engine, true.
But here is the thing: you don't need to vote for them, and PGI does not need to release them. We could just choose sensible Mechs.

Re: why would I want an IS Omni if there are better BattleMechs?

Novelty, fandom, curiosity... And, if the Mechs are chosen wisely they can be viable too. If high performance is the one and only criterion, I would probably want other Mechs (with the exception of the Men Shen). But I think it is strange to judge the IS Omnis exclusively by a standard that has hardly been applied to previous Mechs. The Mech roster of MWO would look dramatically different if high performance were the master criterion.

But again, it is not like every IS Omni would be as bad as the Strider or the Avatar.

PS: IS Omnis are not very high on my personal list. It is just that I try to be fair to them, and I think they got an undeservedly bad reputation.

Just because they used to be a thing doesn't make them good. The Sunder has obnoxiously easy to access hit boxes. A locked XL engine means it's a death trap. That'd be like trying to make an XL Stalker. PGI screwed the pooch on IS omnis a long, long time ago, way before we thought of adding them to the game.

Or my crazy XL idea;
Omni XL = Current clan penalty
Battle XL = Current IS penalty

It's a bit of a sledgehammer, but it would "fix" a few "problems" Posted Image

Still think the Templar would be a good addition to the game. It looks like it would be shape and size of the Battlemaster but have omni pods to swap around and dies have interesting build potential.

Likely with the crusader pattern...

They should totally include that pattern in the early adopter rewards when they release it for sale....
