I would argue that this is how it should be, light mechs should be bigger. It would also help fix (or at least alleviate) the hit detection issues that so many light mech pilots pretend is not an issue. If lights get to have alpha’s as big as heavies or assaults then why should they be ¼ the size?

Of course people will violently argue against it, but that’s just the super skilled light pilots that abuse the hit detection issues, and think its ok for 25 or 35 ton mechs to regularly have the highest damage numbers in the match.

And before anyone of you even says it. No, I don’t have any problem shooting the crap out of light mechs, and I know how to play, thanks.

I am not standing here screaming that light mechs are OPed, I’m just saying the thread creator might have a point. And that it should be OK for him to state his opinion on the matter and discuss it without being attacked by a bunch of anonymous jerks that probably would never talk to him that way in real life.

Just my 2 cents.

- The Old Guy

Alpha equal to heavies? or assaults???

Have you ever actually looked at weapon payloads by weight class?

Allow me to enlighten...

A list of mech chassis actually seen with frequency in matches ( I chose omnimechs for ease of calculating weapon payloads due to the fixed nature of omnimechs)

A currently popular light mech Myst Lynx will have a total carry payload of (including locked omnimech components like heatsinks and jumpjets) of 9 tons with 6.5 tons actually available for weapons after shaving a bit of armor to gain a full .5 ton

A currently Popular medium mech Stormcrow will have a total carry payload of 23 tons after shaving a bit of armor

A currently popular heavy mech Ebon Jaguar will have a carry payload of 28.5 tons

And a currently popular assault mech Direwolf will have 50.5 tons of carry weight for weapons.

So how is it that you assume light mechs have an alpha equal to heavy and assault mechs when a commonly seen medium mech literally has a weapon payload equal to the total tonnage of a light mech! The medium mech can literally mount the entire weight of a light mech in only guns while an assault mech literally has twice the total weight of a light mech in weapon payload alone!

The rescale didn't help lights. I kicked that can of venomous vipers and I won't go back there, suffice to say that the accepted cannon is that PGI did it to meet "volumetric scaling" or some such twaddle. Personally, I think a staff member was embarrassed because they wandered off an was completely murderated by a light and has been nerfing them ever since.

The agility nerf made them even harder to pilot. The engine nerf made them even harder to pilot.

I'm sure that whatever light pilots are using now to be moderately successful is on the list of upcoming nerfs.

I had to become better to pilot lights effectively.

And if I sound a little salty, so be it.

Someone at PGI doesn't understand the square/cube ratio. If the Locust and Atlas are roughly equal in density, the Atlas is over 1000 tons.

And to use a Light effectively in combat? Should take a chunk of skill. Sorry they removed the EZmode from ACHs and such... but...

wait..no I'm not... I'm one of the guys that got them to do the rescale..... my bad!

Nothing about this game is realistic, so stop with that already. Regardless of how you feel about the size/tonnage argument, going in 3 years after we've been playing and spending money on the game and completely gutting a class and playstyle that got some of us hooked on MWO in the first place was just wrong. I haven't spent a penny on MWO since and play about 12 matches every 6 months or so to see where things are. CW is what ****** things. Introducing a mode that only a tiny few play where tonnage is power, then moving that balance philosophy to quick play where things are segregated by 4 supposedly equal classes was probably their greatest mistake. They have to pick a single direction, either lights are different but equal, or they're inferior, but they can't sit in the middle. It's just embarrassing that they can't even decide which way to go at this point.

Within the parameters I listed yes the Direwolf is a common use assault weight Omnimech.

The fact that an Atlas and a Flea have identical internal volume ala critical slots was one of the biggest failures of the vanilla boardgame and it's an incredibly stupid mechanic to translate here.

Luckily, even the boardgame rules makers wised up and came out with MaxTech rules which scaled critical slots by weight.

Doesn't matter, though. It's far too late to start introducing stuff like this into MWO and PGI would never do it anyways.

The only thing I hate about fast light mechs is hitreg.
It's just too random sometimes. At least for me, even with constant ping.
I've placed 50-60dmg pinpoint alphas on shutdown light mechs and barely scratched the paint. And hitting them while they try to circle you is 50% luck.

I run light mechs myself and I have to agree that there are situations where I should get vaporized in seconds, but instead I come out with a few scratches. Other times I lose my leg to some random alpha and it's gg.
It's really very random, but in general, light mechs are strong.

A sad thing are loadouts though. Light mechs don't have as many choices as heavier mechs.
You can boat light weapons or take 1 bigger gun with some backup, but you're limited by weight.
The "nerf" to small lasers put light mechs in a ok spot. They are not OP and they are not useless. SRM builds are a different beast though...

Yes. This x 9001.

Stealth Armor + SRM commando = fml. You literally have to be so observant unless you want to get your rear CT chewed up by these little invisible monsters :/

Any of the anti-light crowd looked at the stats lately? Or ever?

Let's just look at the first page of each leaderboard for this month. If anybody knows how to get the most out of a weight class, it's the top 20 people on the leaderboard for that class. So here's the top 20 of each class compared to each another:

There is 20 entries par page. At average players on the first page played 21 match each (I took Mediums board for reference). Two player played more than 50. No one played more than 100.
Shuch small data sample wont show you anything meaningful.
