Can the supernova be a brawler? Been thinking about getting the variant with 4 missile hardpoints. I have only ever really seen supernovas with a bunch of we larges or lots of lrms.

You could certainly fit it as such, but I doubt it would make a good one. I don't run them, but they seem to fall apart pretty fast compared to other assaults.

The Supernova has kind of a low engine cap to be a brawler assault, given it also can't pair those SRMs with heavier-hitting and cooler ballistics. It's feasible, but I would imagine the MCII would be the better option.

No for the following reasons :

-Doesnt have OP quirks

-Poor agility, cyclops is only used for brawling because it has OP agility quirks (as agile as a 60 tonner)

-Bad hitboxes (no shield arms, easy to single out torsos, etc)

-Runs too hot in general while a UAC boat will just eat you alive at close range

-Clans dont have any decent brawling options atm (long duration lasers/ACs)

4x SRM-6s obviously isnt enough firepower, especially on a slow assault. You could do 4x ATM-9s but they are easily negated by AMS and theres a pretty serious heat penalty for firing 4, and ATMs arent really brawling and more close-mid range support, because in any 1v1 your target will just run into your minimum range and laugh at you.

Only the Boiler can make a reasonable go at traditional brawling. As mentioned, they lack the engine cap to be very fast, and Clan SRMs are so light you have problems running out of crit space with leftover tonnage. One thing the Supernova is sort-of uniquely positioned to do is run a standard engine. The 3 makes a reasonable zombie, but you die to CT often enough that the main benefit is simply avoiding the speed/heat handicap after a side torso loss. I ran a traditional laser mix on mine, but you could probably sort-of brawl by loading it with MPLs and heatsinks with a standard engine. Bottom line though is however you configure a Supernova for brawling, another mech will do the job better.

First, they aren't fast enough.
Second, they don't mount enough missiles/ballistics compared to other mechs to bother with it.

I will never understand why PGI decided to bring this mech in game. What did this thing have going for it back when it was for sale again? Mechwarrior 3 nostalgia? Even from lore the mech suffered from severe heating problems. Other than being another dead weight long range support assault, I will never see why they chose this over better mechs like the Warhammer IIC or something unique like the Phoenix Hawk IIC. Perhaps my conspiracy theory about the introduction of the Marauder IIC in MW:O is what really kick started the whole unseen lawsuit is true.

Before the desync, you would have a point, but after the desync? The mech has a place in the meta, partially because the MAD-IIC doesn't have as good of hitboxes as people like to think.

I mean, its kind of a top tier assault, so.... sure its been sort of eclipsed by the Deathstrike (what hasn't), but the SNV-1 is a top 5 assault variant in the game in my book.

Probably. If you look at the Mechwarrior 3 list, and discount Inner Sphere Omnimechs, this game almost has everything. Only two missing, the Firefly (A light) and the Champion (Please don't put the Champion through the Unified Aesthetic Grinder, PGI. Please).

I just wish there was a variant with 3E/1B in each arm ;_;

Its definitely not the best 90 ton Clan brawler you can take, that's really all the OP needs to know.

I think I may try it. I do some brawling in the warhawk with 2 variants. It definitely isn't the best at brawling either but it's fun. 2 ERLarge, 3 mediums, 4 ASRM 6S. Another with just dual uac 20s, but it's feast or famine with it depending on if the jam gods take it easy on me.

It beats the Highlander IIC, though. It's just got the usual issues most missile hardpoint slowbots have- you have two choices. LRMs, or ATMs, or you just roll with the 4E as your main guns and use the 4M for secondaries instead. Who cares what it's heat issues were in lore, anyway? This is MWO. Build around it.

As a Deathstrike owner I find it to be underwhelming, or at least it's combination of size and hit boxes annoy me a lot more than the Supernovas do. I prefer any SNV variant over Deathstrike.

I like the SNV's hitboxes more but the Deathstrike has that alpha power and exposes itself slightly less.

I was initially very hesitant about getting the Supernova so waited until C-bills, bought one variant and loved them so much I dropped $35 for the base pack and the Hero. It is not a super fast mech but you can get it up to 62 kph with max engine and tweak and the max engine, still leaves plenty of weight to mount tons of weapons and heat sinks.

My personal experience is that they are pretty tanky, spread damage well and can output better than average damage. Most are energy boats to some degree or another and at least one variant has excellent high mounts however even the arm mounts aren't that low. The A variant also is an excellent missile carrier. Best builds for it have been 4 x ER ML, 4 x LRM15+A or 4 x MPL, 4 SRM6A or 4 x ER ML, 4 x ATM9 or what I finally settled on 4 x MPL, 2 x SRM6+A and 2 x ATM 9.

Anyway, I won't go as far as saying they are the mech for everyone but overall they are near the top of my overall favorites list.

Hell yeah, it can be a brawler! Take the variant with energy slots in the torsos, stick a standard engine and as much medium lasers as you can mount, skill up for survival and cooldown, shove 2 cool shots in, and watch that baby tank for days!

I find the SNV to be really tanky..

If you wanna use the SNV-A variant, you could instead of LRMs use ATMs, that's also a popular build, or SRMs, although I don't recommend that one..

I use one of those laservomit beasts, mixing large and medium lasers, and it works great for me, although, I really prefer LRMs on a Supernova..
