As some of you people that lurk the forums might know, I took a long hiatus from Mechwarrior Online after my other friend Harbinger decided to uninstall the game. Got back into MW:LL and decided to give Mechwarrior Online another go since I'm a sucker for anything Halloween related (wanted to get all the pumpkins since I didn't have the complete collection of hanging Halloween pumpkins from the previous years). Here's my two cents since my absence.

Some of the positives:
  • Really like some of the sound effects with the Civil War era tech
  • Skill tree did (slightly) help some of my under performing mechs
  • Digging the MAD-IIC even in it's reseen form
  • I like some of the destructible walls on incursion mode
  • Looking forward to what PGI does with some of the new maps they promised
  • Some of the visual weapon touch ups are nice since I last played, IE barrels finally being even
  • Player base isn't cancerous as some people might qq about
Now here comes the moment of truth. The negatives:
  • What in the world happened to the clan large pulse laser range? 624m effective range? No questions asked it should be 700m to 800m at the very least.
  • The new civil war era tech lasers desperately need distinctive colors. I honestly can't tell the difference of the old tech vs the new besides the sound effects.
  • I think that both IS and Clan minimum ranges should be boosted by 100m respectively.
  • Mech bays and random mech rewards need to return for players that can't afford to grind due to limited time.
  • I don't like the fact with the more you pre-order mech packs, the more loot bags you are rewarded with hence the free mech after 150 loot bags.
  • IMHO I prefer the old module system over the skill tree. I ran out of GXP fairly quickly with only three mechs to try and get them to their maximum performance.
  • I nearly spat my water out of my mouth when I saw the Nightstar walking animations. I feel for some of you that are deeply attached to that mech.
  • Most of the new mechs are just that just that not appealing to me. IMHO I think the Mad Cat MK.2 should be a little more beefier but that's just my opinion.
  • It seems like LRM spam and Ghost heat is still an issue. Shame.
  • Still stuck in Tier 3 because of the match making and garbage teams. Been experiencing more match losses than wins which is disappointing.
Overall, I think some threads about the current state of the game are blowing things way out of proportion. I'm not too sure if Solaris Arena is going to have a positive impact on the game since it might segregate the player base even further. I do think that perhaps with smaller teams quick play might be more enjoyable. Not sure if I will stick around long enough to see how these new maps and future updates will be implemented.

The game is still fun but I'm finding it hard to justify keeping it installed on my hard drive at the moment. I honestly can't complain however, since I gave the game a shot once again. I'll stick around until the Halloween event is over.

Actually, we barely have anyone to play faction play. Solaris is where, in my new player opinion, PGI is strategically headed. It's where the micro-transaction money is.....

Solaris will split the game. And yes, this is only a small niche game and Solaris may actually fund PGI......there is that. I'm not interested in Solaris. We'll see.

It's pretty much always been 600m for the optimal range. What you should be complaining about is that the max range is only at 840m. Heck, I'd take an exchange of like 540/1080 any day over 600/840.

On a similar note I think that the Clam MPL and SPL could really use their double max range back as well.

I did with most of my old mechs. Recently bought a Mad-IIC for cbills and it killed off most of my funds. Still not a big fan for the fact that you have to use cbills to upgrade new mechs, when I have a ton of GXP that I'm trying to get rid of.

then why would you ever use the CERLL? 1080m is too much max range for a weapon with beam duration that low.

the whole reason they nerfed the max range was so the CERLL had more of a purpose

but now they have weird inconsistencies where some weapons dont have x2 max range, which bothers me.

CLPL should be like 450m/900m or something. The sad thing is it would still outrange the ISLPL by a good amount.

I think it should be 700m/950m for the clans. I've felt that cLPL's got hit hard since I've last played because someone had the bright idea to make them into brawling weapons. If they want more people to use cERLL, then simply reduce the duration of it even more so. 650m/900m feels more appropriate for IS LPL's.

Yep, if anything, CLPL range should be reduced to 530/900. IS LPL has 1.65 times longer range than IS MPL, but CLPL has 1.82 times longer range than CMPL. Which still doesn't mean jack cause of IS/Clan tech disparity of Endo/FF/DHS/XL... Without base tech balance, weapon balancing alone wont be enough.

I tend to keep emotional criticism as minimal as possible. Also, if you keep your standards low for video games you will often find yourself less disappointed. I've been let down too many times when it comes to developer promises, so I try to remain optimistic but cautious when the content is finally delivered. I haven't invested enough money into the game to warrant anger against PGI for anything. Trust me, I want to throw my money at them but I can't do so until the unseen court issue settles.

I just respond to a few because i think they are way off..

They have always given free loot bags for buying packages, or at least have for years, this is nothing new.

They have been giving away mechs, and bays and all sorts of stuff, and actually have increased the amount of rewards you can earn. In the last 6 months they have given away tons of warhorns, colors, mechs, mech bays, MC and C-bills. So Free stuff is actually UP.

Just FYI, you should have HSP to use on any mech you previously owned, and then GSP, which you got for refunded modules, which many vets have enough to level 10-100 mechs from that alone. When you level your mech, click on the left side, and pick.. HSP first, if you need more points after 91 because you swap something, use GSP, or use it to level new mechs.

GXP should be the last thing you are using after all your HSP, GSP runs out on perhaps speeding along a mech, or reskilling to something when you don't have a ton of banked XP/HXP.

There are plenty of guides on the subject, and builds that are typical to use on many mechs.

The game also had some major balance changes with movement and heat when the skill tree went live, so don't conflate those changes with skill tree. There were global nerfs across the board

OP is like a spiraling descent into grumpiness, which is fair considering how you constructed it (positive to negative) :)

This right here though is some questionable stuff considering you put this point in the positives;

How can you complain about LRM spam if you play MWLL where LRM's actually work?

I also recently came back after a couple of years break and found that nothing has changed...except pgi made it harder to balance mechs by adding skill trees. Or maybe they gave up and the trees are their way of putting some of the balance in the hands of the players.

People are even still complaining about the exact same things on the forums.
LRM's are still pathetic.
It's still Brawler online.
Lights are still OP.
Assaults are still UP.
Mediums are still pretty much pointless due to lights.
Same crap heat scale so my clan mechs still melt when I fire (stock weapons).

On the other hand my IS mechs feel more powerful than they used to.

Think he means thicker lol, some people don't like the lanky look. Personally I like it and it's play style reflects it. It is no power house like a Direwolf/Kodiak. Nimble assault ect (I mean she is strong but she is no tank ect. Which is fine give that quality to the SNV or Highlander IIC.)
