I haven't played in a couple years. When I left, MWO had P2W consumables. Is that still the case? Have they added any other P2W aspects?

I assume you are talking about arty and air strikes. They are still in the game.

And no, there's nothing else worth mentioning. New heros, that's it.

You can spend cbills to get either, they're not worth spending cash on.
Supply crates are basically pay to lose, so there's that. Better to just sell them for the cbills.

To maybe clarify a bit more: Consumables of various kinds are still in the game, but can be purchased with C-Bills, i. e. in-game currency. It is not P2W in the sense of spending actual money to have a better chance at winning vs. people who do not.

The MC consumeables are only slightly better than the c-bill ones, so I wouldn't consider that P2W... Some hero mechs (MC only units) are slightly better than some c-bill counter parts, but often you can find a c-bill version that is comparable or better than the hero unit. Mostly what MWO is, is P2UE (Pay to Use Early) when the new mech packs.

They're not even that now. When the Skill Tree rolled out, they've been equalized with the C-Bill versions.

Its totally P2W Always has been. Always Will be. Ever since the Clan Debacle in 2013 it just keeps getting worse.

I only gave this game money three times over all my years and never more than $20, calling it pay to win is a joke.

If it was P2W, Golden mechs would be unstoppable killing machine vs targets and founders wouldn't have been screaming bloody murder for years.

The game does require hours of grinding to get some, real money does get your stuff faster but non of the stuff you buy makes your game score any better.

Hell, all the Consumables I have in my inventory that I never use I got for free from events. The 2 Champion mechs I own, free from a event. My MCs I used to buy Camo Patterns, won during the Trick or Treat and Holiday events.

Yeah, the grind is frustrating but it's no where near as bad as other F2P games that are very blatantly define the P2W definition (ie, most of the F2P games on Steam)

Consumables are still available. But the pay version is equal to the c-bill version.

It's pay not to grind as much. Even if you buy mechs with cash. You still have to skill them out with c-bills and XP. And you can't buy XP with cash. You can earn more XP with premium time. But even that is based on how well you do. Certainly takes the edge off on a loss to have premium time. But you still have to work for it.

I really can't say MWO is P2W. It's Pay to Go Faster with cosmetic stuff tacked on, sure. Though even the cosmetics part is mostly negated by the fairly frequent events that hand you free premium currency and cosmetic items.

The only thing I'd say might be P2W is currency-gating new 'Mechs. People willing to pay can get them first and use them unchallenged for a while, but eventually they go up for C-Bill sale (and likely get nerfed, but eh), so even us plebs can run around in them eventually.

Out of all of the possible ways a F2P game can go, MWO is pretty gentle about things.

There are no P2W aspects in MWO since you can buy everything with ingame earnable currencys that you could buy with $.
You just need to invest time...and consumables will be your least pressing concern in that matter.

It has some mild P2W elements like hero mechs but since there are lots of equally powerful mechs purchaseable with cbills i don't see a problem here especially not with the amount of free mc we can gain through events.

And the grind is only hard if you want to own lots of mechs.
I came from WoT and here you have to grind several months or even years to play with some high-tier tanks. I once grinded a whole month just to get the good gun for my KV-1S. MWO was a relief in that regard.

Play as some Clan mechs, and you'll start saying IS is p2w.
Even though you can get mechs from both sides for free.
And IS mechs might be cheaper at initial purchase, but after upgrades and the like to get them comparable to the Clans, the IS mechs are ultimately either equal or slightly more expensive in the cbill department. But quirks.

Dead horse dragged out to get beat on some more huh?
At least I'm seeing more sanity here then the last time.
No... MWO is far from P2W. "Pay to Use Early"? Sure, absolutely, cant deny that. Up until Q3 of last year, I was one of those "I have my toy before you" guys... because I could, I used to like my Ultimate Packs.

Heard horror stories about MWO being not just P2W but daylight robbery, that actually turned me off from getting into this game earlier. No idea how it was in the past, but right now I can say that this game seems like one of the best examples of fair F2P models out there. Yeah, cosmetics price is a bit bitey, but that not something you can't live without.

By the way, folks, how often cosmetics (more importantly color) sales happening? Got my wallet ready for it, need many in a bulk, and buying all with full price gonna make me poor fast. Posted Image

When the "Clan Invasion" occurred, and the first wave clan mechs were released, that was when people really cried P2W because of the early access many of us had by preordering. Just as it is now, preorders get the toys and everyone else has to wait to buy via MC or Cbills.
Problem was, the Clan tech at the time was obviously superior to I.S. and the IS ran clear with saline from the tears of the I.S. faction play crowd.
Even now, most of the reasoning behind the P2W argument is based off of old resentment and sore butts from back then.

As far as color sales.... man we don't get enough of them in my humble, meaningless opinions. Mech sales are great and should be done regularly, but color, patterns and decal sales are not offered enough. Holidays always screw up he rotation because its sale heavy, but thinking back I think we are lucky to see one once or twice a quarter?

Hmm, a couple of points. First, MWO is not PTW. But it is certainly pay to play better. Over time you will notice that the newest mechs are the best until they get nerfed. Which makes people want to buy the newer mechs which from a business view, I totally understand.

And paying for PT through buying mech packs or it itself is a way to pay for playing better. Player A will equal skills always make more C-Bills and get my XP buying PT. I find it interesting that when you do not have it, at the final screen the always tell you how much you COULD of made with it.

MWO always has events just for the owners of the new mechs the week they come out.

However this for me is not the really interesting question or fact.

What really gets me is something that I do not know of another sport or game I've ever played to be. In MWO as it is now, there is little to no reason to win.

Do you think winning a match is important? Can you remember your win-lost record from yesterday? How about this. Do you remember games that you did a lot of damage in? Because damage and kills is what this game is all about.

I thought at first that in CW/FW winning would matter but it does not. Next time you are in a FW match and a team is farming your mechs think about this. They did not take down Omega, winning is not the point. More kills and damage is. PUGs are simply stats for better players.

Next time you are attacking a premade Unit in a FW match try something new. Drop one gate but do not go in. Wait 15 minutes if you have to but they will come out to kill you. I'm 100% sure of it. In fact, if you do not drop a gate, they will eject if they have to and switch to jump mechs and still come out after you.

I listened to a Podcast where the leaders of top teams (the only players allowed to speak or ask questions) complained about this. Russ said it is part of the game and if they want the kills, jump over and get them. And so they plan on it.

WINNING in MWO simply is not that important. Compare that to playing in a Madden NFL franchise league. Every win or loss is important. Heck, in games of pick up basketball etc it is often winner stays and losers set and the next team plays. So winning is more important than your stats or yards or points scored.

Anyway....a part of MWO that always gets me is how a team of pugs will win a game 12-3 and than lose one 3-12 and often a lot of the players are the same, maybe just on different sides now.

For me this often comes from my idea that MWO is not a one on one game, it is a 2-3 on one game. I've been in game where two guys go and get killed and than it snowballs. That is why I say often the first player on one team that makes mistake will often doom his whole team.

No, but bad players like to claim it is.
