I have to agree with you completely, Kalimaster.
I've been reading around the Forums, and it appears that the situation with the New Portal Patcher is NOT Perfect as the Old StandAlone Patcher happens to be as of yet. Sure, the Old one could suffer from data loss issues if you tried direct download, as opposed to pre-grabbing the files with your Web Browser, but that's an issue caused by the ISPs out there. This is likely an issue that can also still happen with the New one, unless there are extra steps in place with the New one to keep the transmission error-free. Unfortunately, I suspect that even with the New one, I'll STILL have to use the Web Browser Manual Download Method. I've already had hiccups from my ISP (both past and present) before this, because they want to force everything through the Web Browser ONLY.
Now PGI wants to force a complete change of Launch and Install routines. Don't they know the old adage "Don't 'Fix' What Isn't Broken"??? This could likely DESTROY many people's MWO Installs! What is wrong with them?!?!? Are they trying to get rid of people by causing them to have non-functional patching situations? And why couldn't they just deliver this as an update to the "MWOPatcher.exe" program anyway, instead of forcing an Extra Install Download? If this New Portal Patcher is supposed to be able to just pick up the Current MWO Install, why not just have it use the same '.ini files' as the old one in order to load up? This looks WAY TOO SUSPECT to me. I could see landing up having to reload for several hours, and having time I NEVER had to lose wiped out!!!
Eh.......

I don't want to turn this into a big argument or anything, but the Portal is actually, overall, much more stable than the old Patcher. The Patcher is in fact, broken in many ways that the Portal is not. There are several things that are the same (such as the download code) between both applications, but the Portal has several aspects that make it more stable, useful, and secure. The issues that people are having with the Portal are, for the majority, actually issues with the old install/patcher path. Also, the reason why the patcher can't just be updated to become the Portal is because the patcher is part of the install base (hence part of the game install), whereas the Portal is a completely separate application install. It does nothing but interact with MWO and it does still use previously configured settings.
As for it looking "WAY TOO SUSPECT", all I can do is reassure you that the Portal only interacts with MWO, and only as an interface for you to patch, repair, and interact with the game/save files. There's nothing more to it than Patcher, except that all install bases are under one umbrella, with the stability/usability/security improvements I mentioned above.
If you have any problem with the Portal at all, feel free to ping me about it. But the patcher will be going away prior to the February patch, so the sooner you switch, the more time we will have to react to issues.

I use Steam because I am tired of having to install and give permissions to separate launchers from every game developer or publisher. I will be playing BATTLETECH on Steam also, so this works best for me. I just wish that my Blizzard games were on Steam too.

I have Windows 10 64 bit insider preview versions which update from time to time. I also tried to uninstall and reinstall the portal but it was no help.
Im not home ATM but I hope I can somehow manually install the patch using old installer or something...
