Hi guys,

my only experience with Mechs are an old Battletech 3025 booklet, I had and an old MW game (MW1 or 2?!) and the early table top game, but my friends disliked it...

So as a battletech newbie, what can you recommend me as an easy entry into the BT universe.

Please just name one book, game, whatever.

Thy in advance.

Another good place to read is sarna.net, the BattleTech Wiki.

Besides of that, If you can get your hands on the BattleTech Sourcebooks you'd be in for a whole lot of information.

But best to start with the guide MuffinTop has linked and from there on use Sarna to read about what you are interested in.

by the way: You are new and have already bought the Legendary? Awesome!

Well,

I believe that it is more important to support indie studios or smaller studios as good as possible, because 70% of the fresh and great ideas these days come from them.

I like innovation and new wind more than copying success formula X until you played the same game with different graphics for 10 years.

If you want to try getting back into the old board game checkout http://mekwars.org Download the 3025 client and get online and start playing! You can join a factiom similarly to how MWO will be and start fighting over planets in the Inner Sphere. There are tons of folks who have had decades of experiences playing in the BattleTech franchise on there at all hours of the day. Hope to see you there!

Each Faction also has a booklet supplement for the pen and paper game...plus I recommend that you pick up the 3050 mech book. Many people keep saying that the clans will be invading late in 3050, actually the first incursions occurred in 3049 and the inner sphere realized it was the clans not pirates by 3050. There are a LOT of paperbacks and I recommend that you read all the books by Stackpole ( most are out of print and hard to find) as he is the one who filled in the geo-political history of the universe...the later mechwarrior dark age books are further in the future than the current game and basically useless (unless you just enjoy reading this universes history)..battletech (not mechwarrior) paperbacks are the best for the current time period in the history of the game.. hope this helps

BTW:

It's nice to see that this community is so welcoming and helpful. You don't find these a lot on the net nowadays.

Stackpole's Blood of Kerensky trilogy is a really good read so far, and it is set right at the same time period that MWO will follow.

I'm in the same boat. I have played my fair share of MW1/2 and some Mech Commander 2, but i never got very deep into Battletech Lore. The amount of fiction and the huge number of factions and clans is overwhelming and hard to swallow at first, but i'll keep collecting bits and pieces. And i'll get me a book or two, there are plenty available :)

The MechCommander games are legally free to download. If you can get them. The second one even went open source. MechCommander Gold was my introduction to Battletech... check out the still awesome* intro!
