trading is fine so long as its effective and you aren't holding up more than half your team from moving into effective range. hiding is where you go 'let them come' because you dont know what else to do, and then fold like a bad hand of cards when they actually do come. both can be used as effective strategies if you have effective players. but in qp that is seldom the case. and in fp if you bring a brawler to polar highlands, you deserve your bad scores.

to be fair: the few times you got a good bunch of w-key-able people in faction on polar, and you all bring your brawlers..
you can have SO much fun there^^

Light mechs are fast and challenging to play. It's hard to classify them all together because there are several niches for them actually, but their role is to scout (not very useful in this game), capture objective points (depend on game mode), flank and disrupt the enemy (sniping), skirmish. Problem historically is they've been harder to balance. There is always one or two lights that are superior. Jenner > Spider > Firestarter > ... > ... > Piranha, etc. etc. The weakest ones are the ones that usually get overquirked to compensate. The difficulty seems to be that really good players can really make the most out of those bonuses while average or worse players still can't, so PGI's telemetry can be rather divergent between more extreme highs and lows. It's basically a niche that some can really play and others can't, and it depends on the particular mech quite a bit too. I remember my team being destroyed by a Locust 1E before. Had more than half the kills at 20 tons because it had insane accel/decel and like 50% laser cooldown at the time. The pilot effectively poked out for a split second, fired a barrage of medium lasers, then retreated before anyone could tell where it came from.

Without bonus, the kit fox and urbie would still viable. Love those bonus's though. Especially the armor ones.

Lights. Aside of what others may have said. Playing a fast light you become in control of the situation. You choose who you want to fight or when to flee from it. Essentially, unlike an assault, you can't be killed by the nascar fools in your team - rather, the chaos of the nascar could be used to your advantage. Your performance will depend on you mostly combined with a bit of luck, and then comes your team. Personally, I used to only play assaults with people that communicate (friends) and then end up bring only lights into regular games.
In essence, as an assault, you have a strategy and stick to it to the end, and as light, you are more adaptive, constantly eyeing out for soft and weak targets, and alter the strategy accordingly.

Because of this playstyle being more experienced with lights, I would take 2 assaults and 2 lights to my FP games, and usually contributed significantly as lights too.

It's also a way to challenge yourself if you find the other weight classes to be too easy in QP solo queue, I have one season with 4WLR and 9KDR, another with 3WLR and 11KDR, playing 100% lights

Vorteex plays mainly lights in QP for the same reason, assaults and heavies are super easy mode, you fall asleep at the controls

Welp, i chose the last option since i play everything.
Lights can do a lot of stuff: Flank, backstab, distract enemies, provide visbility with UAVs or by using ECM, having line of sight with enemy mechs in a safe position, cap, put down unsuspected strikes, protect their team from enemy lights, or stay close to their big boys and support them(Kit fox, Cougar, Urbie). They're a pretty important part of the game, and can be effective, and a lot of fun when used properly.

To damn long posts.... did not read the thread........ Simple answer

Light mechs are in the game to save the damn day, and pull the weight of heavies and Assaults who have no clue what the hell they are doing.... case in point.....

Truly this is a god amongst man.

Never in my good days in my INC 3 can get past 600 damage.

I play lights mainly and good games in a light feel monumentally better to me than a good game in an assault or heavy.

Also punching above your weight is very beneficial to the team and in the current match maker I feel that it's important to have competent light pilots filling those lower tonnage slots.

all i have that comes close is a streak/mpl commando that regularly gets over 500 sans airstrikes. It's hard to imagine not killing the whole team by yourself unless you were purposefully picking off components to not get kills.

I've never scored over ~1500dmg. ever. (Not that I've been playing very long)

I swear when I hit tier 1 I'm going to roll a new pilot and use just one of my best mechs, and see what I can get that k/d ratio up to.... Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image

I shoot the Atlas in his rear torso with my Flea. The pilot realized what is happening and he started to rotate his torso to shot me. The bulky giant was slowly tossing and turning to get an aim. I felt like someone who is watching everything in slow motion. I knew that if he's gonna hit me, I would be in trobule. The guy knew the deal. He puts his back against the wall and was wildly maneuvering his torso to hit me. I knew that with my every shot he was more and more angry and helpless. He focused his whole attention on me. Then finally he hit me. I pretend he scared me and ran behind the corner of the building. Then I peeked only for a second and shoot him again. Yup, the giant was veeery angry, but whatever. He ran after me just to be scraped by heavy lance which was already waiting there for him. I didn't see that, because i was running to harass another giant.

Defending myself from light mechs is hard. Get rid of light mechs.

Light's can be some of strongest mechs if piloted correctly.

I don't know about that. I play Lights because I think they are fun, but if I wanted to max my winrate or matchscore, I would probably play an Assault. It's easier to affect the outcome when you can dump truckloads of damage on the enemy at range.

Lights piloting is about maximizing the lights strengths and minimizing it weaknesses. Seen many games were a clever light pilot dose this and comes out on top when they shouldn't.
