Embarrassed to ask, where do we copy/paste the "user.cfg" to?
I'm running Win10 and MWO installed via Steam.

Put the cfg files at the root of your MechWarrior Online install directory (you should see game_version.dll in this directory). For Steam, it should be something like :
\Steam\steamapps\common\MechWarrior Online\

You should also copy the file tuning.cfg with user.cfg

Tuning.cfg will allow mwo to reload user.cfg before each maps. Else MWO will overwrite a few user.cfg settings when starting the game.

Hello,

I have an issue with adding these files to my Steam application.

I have already checked the integrity of game files.

If I add user.cfg and tuning.cfg into the game directory, my game will just fail to launch. If I remove these files, my game will launch normally.

And I deleted the cache folder.

It didn't help, the game doesn't launch.

I'll let MrVaad to have the honor of answering your question in detail.

For my MWO migration to another PC, along with MrVaad's enhancements (and it works!):

=================
Make a backup of your original files first, just in case:
user.cfg
system.cfg
tuning.cfg

And then move MrVaad's files to here:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\MechWarrior Online\user.cfg

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\MechWarrior Online\system.cfg

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\MechWarrior Online\tuning.cfg

That's all it was for me!

- - - - - - - - - - - - -
Also for Steam MWO, in case you ever transfer your MWO settings to another PC:

Keyboard Bind Keys:
C:\Users\X1E3\Saved Games\MechWarrior Online\Profiles\w0qj\actionmaps.xml

MechWarrior Online MWO LOCATION:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\MechWarrior Online\Bin64\MWOClient.exe

So, I managed to solve the issue, it was related to the bad file, now it is correct. However the performance is still unexceptional with frame rate drops.

I have a moblle NVidia 1060.

With or without the file, there does not seem to be a strong difference in performance, nothing like what other people reported.

Glad you figured this out!

Since you seem to be on a Laptop, your CPU performance could be the issue, your GC should be perfectly fit. If it's an older system, make sure there's no dust in your case that prevents proper heat venting.
What kind of performance drops do you experience? Low 10s? Low 60s?

Hi, I was just recommended this tweak from a reddit post I put up and it's tripled my FPS (20 to a semi-stable 60). I'm wondering how it works with in-game settings though. Someone else here already asked and the reply is that you can set what you want, but how does the actual tweak work? Does it override the in-game settings, or tweak each in-game setting to work better? Like are the tweaks completely separate to what you set in-game or do they actually tweak the different options? Also is it recommended to enable V-sync, or turn it off and cap the frames externally? (Like through RiverTuner).

Hey there! Glad you made it here. I don't like vsync and I'm capping the frames trough nvidia settings.
From what I understand, the tweaks alter things beyond what you set in-client.

The in-game settings act as presets changing multiple values at once. The config file can override them and offers significantly more granular control over the results.

Hi, so it's me again with another question. What setting in the file do I need to change to keep the particle effects looking decent? For example, PPC's default to just being lightning with no "line" in the centre of them. If I change the in-game setting to high or very high then it adds that back in and they look good again, but it resets itself after each match so I assume something in the config file is set to disable that. Does anyone know which setting I'd need to change? Also the initial post mentions some settings you can lower to get more frames but they don't show up in the config file for me.

Hi,
It's e_ParticlesQuality (values are 1=LOW to 4=VERY HIGH).
You can comment that line if you want the game to keep its value.

Did you get the file from Github ? You should see the variables to decrease the load (for slower systems)

Quote

  • lower e_LodRatio to 15/10/5 (lower the details on every objects)
  • lower e_LodCompMaxSize until 6 (lower the details on big objects)
  • disable depth of field with r_DepthOfField =0

Thanks, found the settings. Turns out I had the notebook "Search" function to look for the word upwards so it wasn't finding anything haha. My Depth of field setting has no number or anything after it which is odd, should it be exactly r_DepthOfField =0 or something slightly different if it matters at all (like r_DepthOfField = 0, do spaces matter?)

When there's no value, it will display the current value in the logs.
Spaces don't matter.

Check your power settings. If Windows detects that your system has a battery, it may set a default power plan that throttles the CPU. I had this problem on my desktop because it is plugged into a UPS. That was killing my performance in MWO until I found that setting and fixed it.

+1
I second the "sticky this thread" motion!

At almost 45,000 views/reads, a major contributor to MWO players, including myself personally!

I can confirm. I stickied the orginal thread and replaced it later when MrVaad came up with his configuration tool. MWOConfig is stickied here in New Player Help as well as in General Discussion.

Thanks for this. What a great help!
I got an I9-12900T with 32RAM but the lack of dedicated GPU made it so choppy that it was unplayable. Putting all the settings on low didn't make any difference. However, your files from GitHub saved the day.
Also disconnecting one of my two monitors seems to help a little bit but may be a coincidence.

You always want a dedicated graphics card, but sometimes it makes financial sense to buy your PC now, and upgrade later. =)
