Looking back, the fall of Mechwarrior titles started when Microsoft acquired it. PGI was given the license, tried to rescue MW from oblivion and lasted a reasonable amount of time.
I think it was the player base fidelity to BT that kept things alive for so long and not the questionable and deteriorating changes we saw around MWO.

They killed this game. We were trying to make it better, but it all fell on deaf ears.
They wasted a lot of resources on so many frivolous things, like the FP remake that just ****** up our FP experience, the Solaris 7 that people barely play -- I'm not even that good at 1v1 yet i qualified at top 500. Dafuq?
Resources that could have been put to better use, like transferring MWO to Unreal Engine -- which allows them to better optimize the game, and to give it features that they couldn't before like Ammo-Switching and Crit-Splitting.
They could have balanced the game properly by doing the Community Driven Balance patch, but nah man lets just **** **** up. Lets give every assault sluggish movement speed, lets **** up clan mobility instead of addressing techbase imbalance, lets **** up locust mobility because **** this frustrating little bugger. Lets just put Ghost Heat system cause we're too lazy in balancing the Clan properly, lets link Gauss PPC together that could only fire two, lets make PPCs too hot. etc. etc.
Much incompetence, much bad decision, and now the game is dead, and it dies as a frustrating reminder of what it once was and what could have been, as opposed of a good game we could all look back to.
For me it was a bad decision that they basically said, in so many words, "Our game is dead so we are not wasting time on it". I started with a Clan package...fairly pricey back in the day. Bought a few others and I was honestly looking into buying several hero's and some packs just to help out the game...had my wallet out a few times deciding. Now I took my wallet and locked it in a safe. That sucks

Tbh I was gonna go through this and then counterpoint, and then you not only dropped the ball with "muh natzee" but threw it out the window and it landed right into the wood chipper and exploded.
So let me just say this: General Discussion is full of people right now who are whining and screaming because their precious game is getting old. Games get old, they get retired, it happens. Celebrate the fact that it's lasted THIS LONG instead of trying to demonize people.
Perhaps it is time that the people who actually play the game for fun take back what has been ruined by so called "elitists" who think they know what's best for this game.

Do you really think that if they listened to the player base all players would be happy? And which ones would they listen too?

Lol.
See, basically "Natzis".
It's easy to just dismiss people, just call them "elitist", and it's fine. Don't even address their points. It's funny that you had a chance to prove me wrong, yet here you are doing exactly what I expect you to do.

Lol, no, we're not going to celebrate. It's like Indiana Jones getting ***** again -- I bet you loved Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
There were lots of broken promises, there were built up hypes, all down the drain. And the only reprieve people had is that MWO is in development. Now it's in maintenance mode, so no more development, the promise of it getting better is just another broken promise.
They aren't complaining because the game is getting old -- lots of games got old, these loyal MW fan grew old with previous MechWarrior titles, they are used to it. Rather they are complaining that it got old without being as good as they were promised it to be. That it got old as PGI implements it's bad decisions, and ruined the game for them.
The last good thing they did is the LRM Arc Rework, sure as hell made LRMs respectable. Not a lot of people are ******** on them as a result, unless of course they are still IDFing the entire time like idiots.
But hey, keep being a fanboy to PGI. Don't say we didn't warn you.

Paul's inability to balance didn't help. Russ' obsession with turning MWO into an esports certainly didnt help either.
You cant blame PGI for selling mechpacks though. Thats kindve silly. They gotta make money somehow. You can blame them for almost anything else though.

Maybe. But what I can tell you is not listening to the player base certainly didnt work for them lolol.
So in retrospect it would appear they had nothing to lose by listening to the player base. Because it couldnt possibly be worse than this.
And while the player base is divided on a number of issues, I think youre forgetting all the times the player base was in agreement and PGI pushed through their bad ideas anyway. While many cases were isolated incidents or vocal minorities, there were more than a few major points of contention where the entire player base was against something and PGI pushed it anyway. Like first person, ghost heat, engine desync, heat spike on side torso loss, etc...

Why are there a dozen reds, blues, greens, blacks, whites, and others. Why haven't we gotten new camo since resistance?
Hey, hey, hey... don't you dare bring useless scrutiny to having multiple variations of neon purples, limes and oranges, reds, blues and greens and all the lovely colors in between.

The best part about all of the garbage you said is that you begin by dismissing what I say by strawmanning through your entire post, and then accuse me of the same. If you don't like playing the game, then stop playing, go play something else. No one says you have an obligation to stay here. As for me, I don't care about PGI, I just play vidya m8, and unlike you I'm not trying to push for **** that benefits me under the pretense of "It's good for the community."

Some of us have higher standards.
That doesn't make us elitists, it means we want to improve the situation.
And trust me, the bar isn't high at the moment.
This isn't some amazing one of a kind situation, this is a case of people mismanaging development, and becoming dissociated with both the community and what the community wants for years, which spells doom for a game. Not a doom as in death (though now it might be), but more of a doom of mediocrity and a slow pathetic decline.
They've already admitted that MWO is a sinking ship by admission of no longer being self sustainable, and their continual success banks on MW5 being a successful product. This is poor business practice, and adds credence to PGI being a poor game development company. And those still invested in MWO are going to feel the sting.
They've shot themselves in the foot, and have exacerbated the situation through poor PR. Who the hell wants to buy/support something that could become abandonware within the next year or so? Why would anyone care or respect the developers in terms of MWO after this information?
So a lot of us are coming to the conclusion that this is all MWO will ever be. An esports wanabe that does everything to a bare minimum in the most arcadey way possible surviving on a polished pipeline model by taxing its community whales whilst returning the same thing in different shapes, and throws away any saved resources on failed fads, whilst trying to squeeze that last penny with superfluous sales.
At this point I wouldn't be surprised if they milk co-op related expansions from MW5, and port their mech art assets over as dlc.

And this is where I butt in just to disagree ...
IDF is the LRM's reason to be, its "thing". Making the weapon ***worse*** at its "thing" is not a "good thing", not even close.
