If Ams Is A Ballistic Weapon...

Just referring to the standard AMS. It has an ammo feed and shoots missiles down with bullets.
Color coding aside (ballistic family being purple, ams family being lime-green)

At least its 2200 and not the 1000 per tonne it used to be.

In BattleTech AMS counts as equipment, not as a weapon (I am talking about the standard rules now). So perhaps this is the reason why it does not benefit from that ballistic ammo bonus.
PGI put AMS among weapons, albeit in the separate group. But you can not actually aim it on the enemy as any other weapon, just turn it on or off as other equipment such as Guardian ECM suite.
I guess that listing it in the MechLab as equipment would be probably better.

I have just checked it on my Cataphract. It still has 2200 rounds of AMS ammo, no matter if "Magazine Capacity 2" node is locked or unlocked.

i checked it too and it appears i am wrong. i seem to recall a build with a weird ammo count (something not divisible by 1100), maybe that was a quirk instead. i dont really use ams that much.

Depends on what you're trying to do with it. Effective AMS boating against a lurm heavy team takes a little thought and consideration. Positioning oneself in the middle of the flight path rather than the middle of the team.
Outside of that and turning off LAMS when brawling, yeah it's pretty low skill.

If so maybe they should balance the tonnage disparity too. That would make it even more legit.

Considering I always default to using LAMS, knowing when to micromanage it has indeed become a skill.
Pushing that on/off button must be challenging. I will pray for you.

AMS is for noskills
LAMS is babbys first micromanagement
2x LAMS is doing it right
3x LAMS for Clanner scum
4x LAMS is the territory of Captain Insano.
I must try a Corsair 7A with 4LAMS and 20 DHS.
Throw in a small laser for good measure.

It does; it gets a benefit from mechs with:
Heat quirks (mechs that have a universal -10% Heat general quirk)
Skill points assigned to Heat Gen weapon nodes
It gets another bonus, indirectly, from mechs with Heat Dissipation quirks (heat dissapation works immediately when a Laser AMS is firing) but this is usually offset by the fact that mechs with this quirk generally fit less heatsinks or have a smaller engine size below 250.
