I don't suffer the problem of dropping on maps bad for my build because I tend to use weapons with 400+ optimal range (and plenty of heatsinks), thus they work everywhere equally (give or take).
Personally I'd only opt out of maps because they're just crap in terms of design/play (like Mordor), not because of range or heat or other build-based factors. Le shrug.
Sure but it sounds like you are consciously taking 400 meter heat neutral builds BECAUSE you know you might hit a hot map or a short map, or a long map and this gives you flexibility to play reasonably effectively irrespective of the conditions.
But if the average player knew they could always opt out of long and mid range maps would they really go with 400 meters range or would they go with 300 or so? If they knew they could opt out hot maps would they carry builds that have enough heat sinks to handle all temps or would they load up on the big hot weapons.
There would be no reason to avoid the high risk/reward builds.
To the previous poster yes being a short range build on a long range map isn't a lot of fun- would the game play be better if everyone was sporting the same weapon/range bracket essentially?
I think what makes MWO quite interesting is the mech builds (heat, range, crit seeking, armor removing, movement speed, agility, pin point vs splash) really are very diverse. That makes it more interesting then many FPS where I don't think they generally have the same complexity in that sense.
A game where the diversity in mech builds in the drop is reduced would be less interesting to me. That may not be true for all.
Note Faction Play does tell you the map before you drop - so you have the choice to my understanding to take the right mechs for the map. I don't think that makes it particularly a more attractive mode to most players.
