1. for torso armor, the game is not set up this way : Left torso front = 40 max, LT rear = 10 max. Its set up this way: LT = 50 max in total. You can divide the armor points however you want
2. one strategy for newbies in medium or heavy trial mechs at the start of the game is to simply look for any assault mechs (press Q to help you ID them) and follow them from a short distance, and support them. Be their wingman. Shoot whatever they are shooting at (range permitting) and shoot any light mechs that try to harass them

Is there a way to get in to a single player room, or else a training ground where people can run through and practice shooting at targets? I'm new (can you tell), and want a place where I can simply practice moving and shooting - really learning the controls - before going in to an open melee.

It has been discussed and there is a good chance it will be there a few months from now.
This game is more trial and error.
You can join the public TS and hop onto any of the dropship bays to join a group.
It won't talk to long to learn the ropes doing that way

Be aware that the No Guts No Galaxy server is mostly made up of already-grouped players, but there are very very often those who will aid a newbie on a regular basis (for instance myself, or most other [SHARKS] members. www.nogutsnogalaxy.net

All the same, if you need a non-TS voice system option, the link in my siggy is up 24/7. People are not always on, but it is always up and free to use. You would be surprised how quickly just being able to talk to randoms makes you work together like a well oiled machine!

Once your in just find a group of 1-3 guys and see if you can join up (most groups max out at 4, there are 8-man, but not recommended till you are very comfortable fighting in a mech and know the maps and weapons well enough).
We always invite all players to join House Liao's TS server: http://www.hlvoice.com and drop with us or even chat it up in Skippy's Fern Bar for answers and questions.
Good luck and happy hunting!

and just join any dropship bay with people in it.
you don't need to be in any corp in any way right now.
I would recommend just playing games with people, nearly everyone is happy to welcome new people.
You will find a group of people who suit you during this time.

However, I am familiar with TS from other games and am not adverse to jumping on to help teach / train newbies if needed.
