This is not anything new. The vast majority of the Civil War-era releases e.g. have been hilariously bad for the IS. Everytime people were warned, everytime they pushed for the bad Mechs regardless. If anything the community wants these bad Mechs.

Uziel (Pre-Release):
A: "Very bad hitboxes, mediocre hard-points and basically no strong points. You may want to rethink this."
B: "NOOOO! MW:4 über alles!!11 Soo iconic!11!"

Uziel (Post-Release):
B: "This is bad! Why did nobody tell me!?"
A: "Um, you were told."

Osiris (Pre-Release):
A: "Pretty average unit, especially compared to what we have already."
B: "NOOOO! MW:4 über alles!!11 Soo iconic!11!"

Osiris (Post-Release):
*completely ignored*

Thanatos (Pre-Release):
A: "Bad hitboxes, and ECM has been nerfed. There might be better choi..."
B: "NOOOO! MW:4 über alles!!11 Soo iconic!11!"

Thanatos (Post-Release):
B: "This has bad hitboxes, and my ECM does not help much!"
A: "Really?"

Hellspawn (Pre-Release):
A: "Just say it."
B: "MW:4 über alles!!11 Soo iconic!11!"

Hellspawn (Post-Release):
B: "What am I going to do with those hardpoints? And why those quirks? They are garbage!"
A: *sigh*

And you know which new light Mech is the popular, don't you? The Hollander.

To be fair, any of those could have been good with enough quirks. Isn't that the real issue?

Absolutely true. PGI could make any Mech good, including the Grand Dragon btw.

It should be that Mechs with bad geometry and limited hardpoints e.g. get great quirks to offset those drawbacks. It is just that hoping for quirks resulted disappointment more often than not. Unfortunately so.
Of course, if the Grand Dragon ends up being great due to quirks, I will consider it.

Yes.

Sadly, our Balancing Overlords™ don't seem to care as much as we do.

I was one of the people who wanted a Grand Dragon since it could be created by using a pre-existing mech. Now, while I'm glad that we finally got it, I'm disappointed it was the 1G variant. Believe me, I'm all for a faster Dragon, but why bother using the 1G when there are other Dragon variants that can do better? Especially the 1C variant, which can fill in a similar role. Besides, the 1G is just a poor man's version of the 1C without a ballistic slot and faster speed. What I really wanted to see was the 7K since it was faster that the 1G. The 7K could go at 97 KPH and 129.KPH w/MASC (104.5 KPH and 139.3 w/MASC if fully Speed Tweaked) making it the fastest IS Heavy in MWO. Sure someone could scoff at the 7K, but at least it has MASC to set it apart to make it unique among other Dragon variants. The 1G on the other hand, does not have that excuse. Personally I wouldn't mind seeing the 7K replace the 1G or become a Loyalty variant. I'm fine with either decision.

But just like the saying goes, "Sometimes what you want ain't always gonna be what you're gonna get and what you get ain't always gonna be what you want."

Say what you will about the Thunderbolt "Tennessee" variant, but at least it has the excuse of having ECM, Jump Jets and MASC to go with it. The Prime Grand Dragon on the other hand is straight up awful and doesn't add anything changing other than being a faster Dragon.

Speaking of popularity contests, I'm currently counting up all of the mechs requested in that thread so I can make a speculation thread about the next booster packs.

And here we go:

To be fair a lot of those mechs issues is because odd PGI designs..

The Uziel body was far to large and the arms far to small.
The Osiris isn't actually that bad a mech.
Thanatos body is like a brick..
Hellspawn would of been better without the missile area in the chest..

if pgi wants to make variant packs at least check to see if people actually want to buy the variants you put out there. is it too much to throw out a poll so players can vote for potential variants?

I think the more disappointing thing is that PGI just picked from the list and ran with it... rather than saying "Hey community, here's a list of the top 5 or 10 suggested mechs. Let's vote on these specific mechs and the top two vote-getters will be done." ... The 10SE is, as everyone's said, at least does something different from the other TBolts, while the 1G is just "WTF?". It's such an anemic variant that I feel it brings down the value of the pack overall. I can't see any situation where the 1G is would be useful.

And, to be clear, if it takes more quirks than the standard Dragon variants get... then it's not a good choice at all. And 2 CT missile hardpoints is worse than useless because (aside from 2 SRM4s), you can't do anything useful with both of them. Put one in the ST and then it's marginally better. But even better would've been to double the number of torso energy mounts.

Hahaha.

The Thanatos just needed a little more quirks. The Uziel and Osiris are okay and can at least be fun. The Hellspawn and Dervish both added nothing for me.

The Thanatos is a great mech, one of my favorites :D
i also really like the Osiris as a mech (Not good a using lights)
The Uziel is a ok mech but i agree sometimes really fun to play
i Dont like the Hellspawn
I love the Dervish really fun mech :D

Eh. give it 12 b slots in the gauss torso and Chuck it out. At least it's meme out some use like an IS pir back stabber

I’m not so much interested in what variants they drop as what new chassis they might drop late this year

I just realized that if we had Compact Gyro and Compact Engine, you could actually cram an MRM40 into the center torso of this thing. Still pretty much running a medium-mech loadout on a heavy but I think it's funny anyways.

If it has enough PPC quirks I'll just run this DRG-1G

Watch out for the 4 MPL, 2 SRM4 loadout though Posted Image

I was thinking more along the lines of 2 HPPC and 2 MPL.

Swap the missiles for 2 LRM5 and ask your teammates to hold locks for you at the start of every match. Posted Image

But then you can't strip an arm for more DHS, and it weighs more :(

Downgrade the engine a little bit. Maybe downgrade the MPLs to MLs.

I'm kind of assuming that the mech will have at least 5-10% heat reduction, based on how many weapon quirks the other Dragons get.

Yeah, maybe with an energy cooldown quirk this will do enough to be viable DRG-1G

The missiles are really just for something getting within 90m

The Jarl's rating of the players who requested it matters not one jot. Most players don't care about it, and I'd imagine many don't even know what Jarl's is. Sorry bruv, but PGI asked for suggestions and went with the most popular one, seems rather cut and dry to me.

Well, they went with the most popular Inner Sphere one. The most popular one overall was the Dire Wolf C actually (I counted the number of posts that endorsed each mech), so there is some kind of method at play other than purely popularity (popularity is however a huge factor).
