Little background...

I have essentially entry-level experience in game design and have provided both free and contracted 3-D asset development and physic modeling for a couple of flight simulations.

That as a preface, in particular my deep appreciation of simulation-level games, I've been putzing with a couple game development platforms and believe I could produce a simulation level game that would cater to mech-combat nerds (like me) that would lean into some pseudo-simulation aspects while still being "fun"...

Obviously, this is something I'd be doing for my own edification, don't have deep pockets and have no intentions of dabbling in any IPs so it'd a generic clone of sorts...

My caveat is, would any one actually play it or for that matter be interested in it?

Thoughts?

You can be on to something. People will still want to play a mach simulation game, and it does not necessarily have to be Mechwarrior.

Trip back into history. I am not sure how many people still remember this, but this mech game below happens to be Bioware's first ever game.

looks for me not so interesting like Earthsiege 2 and his fatastic Missions (escort for example)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metaltech:_Earthsiege

and the HERC`S-Mechs was constucted with more Logical Sense as in BT

It depends on what you are considering as simulation.. Are you talking 4x genre or a mechcommander style genre? how much simulation are you talking.

I've been chafing for a modern Mechcommander style game, which Battletech was not.. But i always loved Front Mission 2 and 3 as well style games where i could micro manage my mechs and pilots. etc.

Front Mission in each aspect more realistic as BT, and Mechs can not carry 20t Ammunition or 1000 Missles ..2 or 3 Loads Missles in the Backpack) and the story was more as perfect

Making a shareware mech fight simulator might be ok, users can just download it and play, perhaps make a private donation.
But publishing/commercialising this software (selling it as a product) looks more and more difficult.

Check Dual Gear on Steam early access.

Something to fill the emptiness of Armored Core and Front Mission fans for the while.

I will whale for a BT or MechCommander game that I can play on a mobile tablet that I can take anywhere to a relaxing setting. There is something that strategy games that satisfies me that shooter games can't.

I am not sure if Mechs vs. Alien Hordes is your cup of tea, but if it is, there is a new game for this. Kudos to this developer, he did an awesome job.

If you like Front MIssion style turn based mecha RPG game, there is another game called Phantom Brigade.

This is really quite interesting... I like the whole "cheos theory" application.

Best you can hope for without money and connections. Is to get in the modding scene. Find a game that could be a good framework for a sim. One where a lot of what you need to build is already done. Saving you the time and cost of doing that. But the more you want to do with it. The more you're going to have to rework things. Unreal Engine is pretty much free to use you just gotta build everything yourself.

I am going to make a thread in the Off Topic Section for those interested in new mech games, mostly indie, that you might never heard of.
