Like IH, I also don't do art for a living. Stylistically, when I go in and start working on a repaint I actually don't bother worrying about "realism"... Part of the beauty of this process is that a lot of things (shading, perspective) are taken care of by the underlying art. What I focus on then is an accurate depiction of the coloration of the units, and this is where technique comes in. The big thing to keep in mind when applying color is that though this is a 2D-image, it represents a 3D shape. What should be a straight line isn't: it's going to depend on different angles that the 'mech is meant to have. Looking at your catapult, parts of the 'mech have this (specifically the front part of the legs), but many lines and images are just applied directly without taking the intended geometry into account.

I'd say another big thing is to add in bits of flash: small pieces of nose art, the occasional random text block meant to represent warnings, guesses at different warning symbols, etc. It's also not a bad idea to avoid colors that are too vibrant. Desaturation can help a bit here, but can be over-done. I'd encourage you to just keep cracking at it until you figure out what works for you.

My goal with these is to make them appear as close to the original concept as possible, while simply bearing a different paint scheme.

Can anyone using gimp help out. I followed have the tutorials I found in this thread for using photoshop and figured out what i could in gimp but I am having issues when trying to apply decals over my paint layer. Can someone post a gimp tutorial on making the decals merge down and and preserve as they do in photoshop please. I can make the decals place them where I want them but when I merge down it kills the mask and paints the whole mech white. Thanks in advance!

All these requests are probably kind of annoying, but could you please make one of the cicada? preferably in windbourne highlander colors. Thanks ;)

Ok, taken yalls suggestions under consideration. It also occurred to me that it would be stupid of me to try to get the Cat to match the background and instead made the background try and match the Cat. Instead of breaking my mind trying to get a comic book like character to match real world, make the world more like the comic. :P

So, any thoughts, suggestions, feedback, whatever, totally open to it. :(

Back in the day, I had a Battletech lance painted in the Bee paint scheme.

Great memories. Agree 100%, would be great to see the paint scheme in game.

Shouldn't take to long for more to go up took me 15 minutes to make the jagger template thanks to abit of help from yourself and the YouTube vid on the tutorial page. want ot see the competition in the arms race

I made a rather crap Dropship template if anyone is interested. There's a few pixels of green here and there where I just couldn't be arsed trying to get rid of them, but you won't see them unless you're zoomed in and it hasn't been recoloured.

Stone Laments skeletal camo but wish i went for a Warhammmer 40k legion of the Damned look with the flames at the bottom I kept the bones basic if you could call them that lol. added republic of the sphere logo because I couldnt find a Stone laments logo :P

TaylorMadeGamer, your repaints are nice, but you should really correct the medium lasers.
They are always painted the same way as the rest of the torso, while they should stay green.

Just started working on it. We should think about splitting the work somehow (as if we could) or have PGI provide its ever loyal repainter fans with a base image file that does not have the decals and paint layers on it. That way, Alex would get nice surprises earlier when he roams this thread, eager to see repaints a few hours after his work is out.

But anyway, I guess that's just an idea that we won't see happen... :P *plunges scrubber in turpentine bucket and then goes on scrubbing 'Mech armor plates.*
