Funny you should ask. The original form of the word turned up as Atlai (see the writings of Insanicus, 400BC), which was already a plural. The debate to what the singular should be was quite pronounced, though eventually they decided on Atlas, with the retroactively assigned root of "Steiner". Needless to say, this stuck.

It's not, it's perfectly good (ancient) Greek and I can assure you, it pluralizes just fine, like all nouns do in both Latin and Greek. Rarely does context call for it but I gave a simplistic example of English doing just that: "I saw the two Jennifers, yesterday". So, no.
