I was talking with some friends, and we were thinking that, if 'Mechs that a player pilots are persistent and don't get replaced every game, then being able to name the machine would be an incredibly fun convention.

Naming my Awesome something like An Appeal to Reason would be ******* awesome.

EDIT: Specifically, naming it so anyone can see the name of that 'Mech. I realize there is some ambiguity on what 'naming' means.

I'd name my Atlas Mr. Bubbles.

Haha, I have a whole list of possible names. Kiss My ***, Prosthetic Conscience, Profit Margin...the list goes on. I'm saving all my really good ones for the name menu, though. Don't want anyone stealing them! :)

being able to give your ride's names would definately be "in universe" for battletech. like the planes and tanks of WW2, mechs, tanks, planes, and other units in battletech have frequently been given names. "ares" "Yen-Lo-****" "legend killer" "widowmaker" "prometheus" "lone wolf" "executioner" and so on.

you'd need to have a filter and rejection program to block blatently insulting, pornographic, or objectionable names, but it seems ot me that that wouldn't be too hard.

If this becomes a feature I'm naming a Hunchback "Igor" right away.

signed! It'd be cool to hear an audio sequence where the computer challenges the mechwarrior for his/her access phrase too. +1 immersion

you could do this in Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries and was a very fun part of the game, the whole customization part. I created a Summoner and called it Cupid for some strange reason. :)

But I am also afraid this will be used to make senseless name that ruin the atmosphere. If its a possible feature I will call my Atlas "Sauerkrautshooter" or "Lederhosenraider".

Calling dibs on a Zeus called "Steiners Legacy". :)

I'd love this idea.

Hmmm. A Guillotine called Marie Antoinette. Or a Thorn called Jim-bob. Decisions, decisions . . .

Love the idea give people incentive not to just rush in and lose a ride and replace it later. A Lot of mech where passed down from one generation to the next.

Must have. All my favorite configurations got names. Generic stuff for test configs 2lbx10_3erml, but if it played well and I used it alot, then the config got a name.

Hum,... here's an idea, you can only use a name once on a particular chasis, if that mech dies then you'll have to tack on a II, III, IV etc,.... or you could pay to get the name of your dead mech reactivated.

brilliant idea! I love the thought of my mech with "The Judge" painted on the shoulder for all to see.

I like the mech name idea. We did that some in our group's tabletop game. I will keep all my choices to myself :)

The concept, while simple, is brilliant, since it puts some form of attachment between the pilot and the 'Mech. You could do this in NavyField (a Korean MMO that's gone down the tubes), and it's awesome.

I'm all for it, just so long as it's not free (don't need 13-year old kiddies naming their 'Mechs cuss words and flashing it all over the place).
