i don't think it will be as critical as going for a critical shot for the cockpit. I think the physics of the game should be paramount. Just because I zoomed in and aimed a laser at your leg or cockpit, does not mean it will still be in my reticle when I fire. Gotta emphasize to all new players that mech fighting is a matter of constant movement and flanking (going after the least armoured side of a mech). And always keep in mind critical hits.

In Mechwarrior, sometimes Battlemechs lose legs. No way around that. In Counterstrike, sometimes you get shot in the head with a Glock. No way around that either. But if you get "legged" at least you still have a chance to contribute to the round. I suppose we could debate all the ways armor could be reallocated to prevent certain tactics from achieving dominance... but the fact is that several mech games have already tackled this problem and came out with something that felt like it belonged in the Battletech universe. So whether the developers use a hybrid of those techniques or implement their own unique take on armor to address this issue, I'm certain the end result will be good.

There's a player tendancy to dislike being disabled more then being killed. Look at how people hate Ice levels or creatures with stuns and such. So while it's true they can still contribute...the experience is going to be frustrating for a lot of players.

Personally? I have no issues with the tactic.

We all can, easily identify some classic Mech vs Mech combat tactics. To name a few: legging, alpha strike, jump sniping, the cicle.
They all are valid and good tactics. What we don't want is, to see people starting to game the game. I don't mind to see all of them online, as long as no one can exploit the game mechanics. MWO development as an online *only* title - pure PvP, takes care of this. PGI addressed our fears in this regard and talked about it many times - I have now worries here.

Legs always had heavier armor than torsos. Yes torso have greater armor in tonnage, but it is spread between the rear and frontal arc, making either one of them weaker than legs.

Legs do not have that "feature" and should always be the most heavily armored.

So if you skimped on leg armor just to squeeze moar guns for your l33t alpha, many will just leg u for lulz. And leave you a million+ c-bill repair bill for your character.

Yeah - the only people that complained were just sad that they couldn't hit legs. It would be like going to a boxing match and being incredulous about being hit in the face. In MW2 Netmech, depending on the mech, the legs were a weakspot, and if you could hit them then you'd win, but it wasn't *always* the best tactic. I hope it's the same in MWO, I hope there are still people who get mad about it.

In Real Life;
Abrams MBT = Thousands or millions of dollars.
Hand grenade = 50 - 100? dollars.

Abrams runs over hand grenade = disabled tank.

So powerful a tank, yet so easily damaged or disabled. That is reality.

In this game, you in a 100t Atlas.
Eventually, me in a Black Hawk, mechlab set for scout,

If I come across you, you bet, I am going to try a quick knockdown, by blowing past you, full speed, while trying to quick alpha strike your knee.
It's a good tactic, and from my point a good time.
And the further the timeline goes along, the more fun in different ways there will be.
Hunchback Swayback, slow, but six Mlasers. fun
Black Hawk, fast, low to the ground with ten CERMlasers and two CPMLasers, Big Fun.
And later, Rotories, aim ahead of you and let you run into the rounds. Big Big FUN.

And I know I saw somene in the game trailer video in an Atlas take a shot at a Jenners Legs, as it zoomed by the Atlas. So I am fairly certain the Devs. have considered "legging" and are trying to get it in the game and balance it.

I can hardly wait to give Legging a try in this game.

I don't care one way or the other about leg attacks. At least if we can't kick then leg hits will be a reward for skilled pilots. 2 questions for the devs though: 1) Will an immobile mech be considered dead, or can they still scan & fire from prone? 2) How will pulse lasers work? Because in MW3 the continuous beam made leg shots with pulse lasers too easy. Even I could do it, & it allowed me to salvage the best mechs from a mission. If pulse lasers are more like laser machine guns in MW-O, leg shots will require a bit more talent. :P

You can't make that comparison because MW4 doesn't have convergence nor does it have that aiming lag that we saw in the trailer. Getting used to a system still doesn't get rid of its difficulties. If I recall, ACs in MW4 don't have a travel time, either.

I don't know what your talking about or remembering, but I didn't see anything convergence wise or lag wise that will change the way I aim travel time weapons in this game compared to the way I do it in MW4.

Oh, and ACs(along with guass and PPCs) most definently have travel time in MW4

legging? pfft, your rear armor panel has like 20% the armor of your leg, and once that armors gone your core is exposed to hits. why worry about limping or immobilized over a leg, when i can backstab you and win outright right there? (ps this is the only way youll wittle an atlas down in a light, hit his back till he blows).

ps a standard infantry frag grenade cannot detrack an abrams tank with battle treads installed, sure itll burn off the rubber road parade ones you see when theyre just training at home, but the metal treads used in combat deployment can take rpg hits and even small ied bomb hits wihtout being knocked out.

whats the point in having nearly impenetrable depleted uranium coated ceramic woven armor on a tank if a frag grenade can detrack and imobilize it so bombers can pound it till it breaks?

Okay... let's dispense with the silly notion that not legging is somehow chivalrous. This isn't the 1800s' and we don't line up all neat and pretty banging drums and tooting fifes and dying like morons. Nor do we turn our backs, walk 15 paces, turn and fire....

Any part of a Mech is a viable target and depending upon your desired conclusion (Death or Salvage) you are going to shoot what ends your means.

Legging Mechs is the equivalent of tracking a tank... Something that's been done since someone discovered exactly what a larger heavily armored vehicles weakness was...

I guarantee tank commanders are just as annoyed by it. :P

It's a viable and logical tactic and crying about is as ridiculous as not taking advantage of shooting out a Mechs legs.

Wouldnt it just be great if everybody just aimed for the legs first? it s viable right?
yeaah.
That woiuld make for just spec.... tac... u l... ar gameplay..
Fortunately , only about 15 % of the player base feels the need to explore the world of legging.
Since <i think> smurfing is not going to be easy, the known leggers will be out there waving their banner of pride with their pilot name.
If you get legged, make sure your team knows and returns the favor. Secondly , leg them each and every time you see them till they stop. There are many who chomp at the bit to leg leggers.

At the end of the day, if you become repeatedly legged, unlike everybody else, it's nothing but your own fault. You either didn't bother to look up what the leg armor on your Mech looks like and pilot it accordingly, or you might reconsider actually using cover once in a while. It will still occasionally happen, as there is no special invincibility provided for YOUR Mech legs, but if it happens frequently the culprit is most likely the person that looks back at you from a mirror.

Makes one wonder if people going emo about a perfectly viable and legitimate game mechanic are just terrible pilots or have serious anger management issues... :P

So long as I can equip the same or more armor on my legs than the torso then I have no problems with it. If I notice people trying to leg me all the time then I will max out the leg armor and take out their torso (where their weapons and ammo live).

Aye, i dont either see the problem with legging.

Sure, it can be annoying to be legged, but rather have my leg missing then the entire mech, no? I can still shoot back that way.

Ahhhh..Legging...I remember my favorite thing to do in MW4 was to torture those people in the 7 erlrg laserboats by stripping both arms and legging em..then move on tothe next and leave em flounder in the distance....sighhhhh...good times.

Legging should be made as difficult as head-shots, aka a moving target, multiplied by a small area of opportunity to hit that is also moving. Should be hard, to hit. From the swarm tactics i saw in the vid with a Jenner running around, its legs are hard to hit, but the larger mechs left themselves open for a good pilot to chip away at the legs...

But regardless we have beat this horse several times, and where there is a way, it will be used

Count on getting legged, I will find a way to make it work; the reward of slowing an opponent down for a pack style kill is award enough.

Legging was never really a problem for me in MW4, and I play multiplayer alot. In MW4 people usually just alpha strike your body and you explode.

in MW:O it should not just a case of clicking on the right spot in the screen, its probably a case of clicking on a spot on the screen and praying that your autocannon shell actually hits that spot you clicked on. There is no accuracy variation in MW4- everything just hits where you click instantly.

Its also a huge trade-off in accuracy- the torsoe is a much larger target than the legs, and is much easier to hit. The torso also contains the reactor, ammo and pilot, meaning a good hit in the torso can destroy the mech outright rather than just slow it down or topple it on its side.

I am fine with legging a mech- its war, the enemy cannot whine about being legged, because he is dead and you are alive.
