Poll: Coolant (323 member(s) have cast votes)

Do you want coolant to be in MechWarrior Online?

  1. Yes, full in functionality such as in MW4. (39 votes [12.07%])

    Percentage of vote: 12.07%

  2. Yes, similiar in functionality to MW4 but largely tweaked. (50 votes [15.48%])

    Percentage of vote: 15.48%

  3. No. I don't want a Hunchback with 10 Medium Lasers alpha striking then dumping all of it's coolant whilst taking no damage and being ready to alpha strike again in 4 seconds. (138 votes [42.72%])

    Percentage of vote: 42.72%

  4. Maybe, depending on how heat is handled. (96 votes [29.72%])

In MWLL, there's a notably large divide over the canon and gameplay functionality of Coolant. Some of them even argue that 'Mech "coolant" (aka ejecting coolant to cool down your 'mech) be removed because it negates the advantages of ballistic weapons / makes it too easy to use energy weapons.

No coolant, coolant pods MAYBE, I think mw2 and even mw3 with its 2 shot collant was far better than the mw4 or mwll, where spiking heat to aburd levels and flushing coolant had no negative effect. I would love to see heat in all its glory with penalty to move, risk of ammo explosion, loss of pilot concisousness, etc.

Absolutely not to the idea of coolant pods. If you're overheating your ride to dish out the damage quickly, then you should be prepared to take the punishment that's coming.

I'd like to see coolant able to be flushed... But at a considerable penalty.
After you vent all your coolant, what the hell else do you use to transport heat? The reactor would have to shunt into a "limp mode" producing a reduced power output, and fired weapons would have a considerably longer cooldown time.

You've just ejected all the fluid you were using to transport heat from your weapons and reactor to your heat sinks and radiating surfaces. You've also gotten rid of a lot of heat in the process, making it possible to fire one last suicidal (or sacrificial) shot at an enemy, in order to roll the dice on saving yourself in a split second and limping back to the dropship for extraction, or perhaps to go out in a blaze of glory by taking the enemy down with you when you would have otherwise died an undignified death.

This way, venting overheating coolant would be an emergency option for use in dire emergencies, as opposed to just something to do regularly.

I blame MW3 for bringing in coolant flush.

Coolent pods are added to a mech like a weapon. They take up weight and space, You have to give up something to get them. It's in board game should be in this. as for how MW4 does it. Terrible system and makes little sense. A good hot temp cooling system needs to stay under pressure to keep from boiling, silly to dump it.

If there's coolant, it should be like MW3, or just be one-shot. Coolant pods would increase the amount of shots. MW4 and MWLL's coolant system lets you just ride the red heat line constantly with no real consequence, as long as you still have coolant.

It very much matters how heat is handled overall. In an MMO, you want people to be able to do things consistently -- but not so consistently as to be broken in a multi-player format. If you set it up so that there's one dominant strategy/build and it relies on coolant to function, then you're doing it wrong.

Coolant-based loadouts should be a sort of rock-paper-scissors type decision in building a mech. I can build a mech designed to Alpha Strike, and quick load -- but it shouldn't be an auto-win in every match up.

It's all depenant on how they handle heat. I could see a one shot flush, but the MWLL version, you could just slowly keep ejecting coolant and never overheat would be too much. If you're willing to push your mech too far, you need to have some repercusions, my votes on ammo exploding or damaging heat sinks

How does dumping coolant even make sense? It's a horrible idea to introduce. Sometimes you really can ***** up a game by trying to add something to it just for the sake of saying you added something new.

Speaking as a Veteran of the Pen and Paper version of the game I feel coolant flush is just plain wrong.. However... Speaking as a Veteran of MW4 it saved my *** more than once or twice... I really think it is gonna have to come down to how the Devs make the mechs handle heat... If they do end up in the game I would Really like to see some Justification for why its there.....

I realize that coolant dumps are in the rules, but they're in TacOps, not TW. They're not a normal part of the game.

I like the idea of Coolant pods (since they are game cannon) but that built in coolant flush is silly. The only time I want to see a Swayback Alpha with ALL it's medium lasers and cool down for another shot a few seconds later is if that thing was hooked up to a coolant truck actively flushing the Mech's heat sinks. :)

Never liked the coolant flush idea. The heatscale in the PC games needs to be more aggressive. Over just 4 heat on the table-top and you are taking penalties, double that and your firing gets harder. I remember going into the yellow/red ranges in MW4 and not really suffering other then having to watch my firing rate. I would like to see heat effects creep up slowly, slower top speed, slightly slower torso movements/aiming and have those effects ramp up as you go higher on the scale. I would want to have to manage my heat more, keep it in the green to make it manageable but still slightly effecting my 'mech. It would really make a cool running system a very desirable instead of the "alpha strike and flush, repeat" styles of play.

Never liked the idea of a mech dumping coolant.
Rather have pilots manage heat than just pulling the trigger then do a dump to save themselves from shut down.

Make the coolant like it was in Mechwarrior 3, limited amount but there, that way All Energy weapons are viable but you have to be good at managing your heat levels. I never had a problem with coolant because its even in Battletechs fluff so its a part of the universe.

I would say no but if they implement it just right so that you can’t “dump” your coolant but have it be a slow acting effect I would be up for that, this way even if you were facing an Hunchback with 10 medium lasers you would still have a chance because he would have to still watch his heat.

I think coolant is an awesome idea. Coolant as an option with tonage added. Or the choice to go with out for extra armor would be cool with me. of course there should be a limit to how much coolant you can carry. and no perma coolant to keep flushing over and over. Heat sinks with Coolant as options would work just fine.

No no no, broken idea. I can't see this helping game balance at all. If you want to add Level 3 tech coolant pods (when they become available *late* in the time-line) that makes sense. Nothing wrong with coolant trucks either, since they're fragile and you're immobile while using them. Plus nothing wrong with submerging for extra cooling either.

Another feature they could implement in addition to issues with the Mechs would be that as your heat rises it has a visual effect; the view gets more and more blurry and perhaps darker. They could even add something of a wobble. This would represent the pilot's cooling vest struggling to keep up and the effects of the heat on the pilot. It would also allow the introduction of the exceptionally rare cooling suits, perhaps as a reward for some special event or as an achievement of some kind, perhaps as the prize for winning the Solaris Circuit.
