Mechs weigh a ton... up to 100 ton. For a 30 ton mech you would need more than 60,000 lbs of thrust just to get it off the ground. That's 10,000 more lbs of thrust than an F-15 produces at full after burner, and this thrust is pointed straight at the ground. I would love to see a large dust cloud form upon jump jet activation. I think that effect could be used tactically as well.

I like the idea, should depend on the terrain your in, in a park hell bess lots of a dust, on the ferrocrete, less deepening gon how much debris is around.

I totally agree with this.

I don't even know if this would be possible, even with future tech, because even with the heavy's, it's like launching an M1A2 Abrams, an 80 ton tank, about 500 feet strait up. But it would still be cool to do it, brown out and all.

Cool, but ultimately, wasted development because any competitive play will have people turn it off so as to not obscure their vision on enemy 'Mechs. It'd be great to see a big blast of dust as a 'Mech takes flight. I'd be just happy with heavy smoke trails that cannot be turned off.

I like the idea but any hiding effects such as this or smoke from fires etc would have to be unable to be turned off.

Using your thrust from jump jets to create smog like atmosphere is a cool idea. It will make sensor upgrades necessary for mechs & makes retreating fun.

Turning off effects to give yourself a tactical advantage is like turning gamma all the way up when the game takes place at night. Totally cheating.

Actually no, its not at all.
As to the effect, smoke effects in many games cause performance issues so yes it would have to be able to be turned off or just not put in at all.

I'm all for this. As long as its not overdone.

I dont think Jumpjets should be an instant smokescreen.

I imagine the truth of the matter will be that this kind of effect may be outside the performance envelope that they are shooting for. So we may not see it.

Here is my 2 c-bills.

There are certain effects that just plain should not be allowed to be disabled (Hence minimum specs) Smoke, and debris clouds are there for a reason, to obscure.

I'd like to see short duration clouds caused by jump jets, something that dissipates quite quickly.

I agree with jbone - it should be possible to change settings to avoid performance hits on low end PCs without loosing smoke etc - just making it "less pretty". The graphics abilities on the CryEngine are good and other factors will hit performance more. After all the engine was designed to look good on an XBox 360 - thats a pretty low spec PC these days.

Still, the particle cloud you're prolly talking about for every single jump jet activation, Nik, might be a major performance factor. And not only for your graphics board, but also for the connection to the server. I a full lance or two decide to jump off, what amount of data you think needs to be transferrred for that? Now add to that an already somewhat laggy connection and you could end up with jumping being an "I-win"-button for people with better connections. Because they can simply lag out their opponents on worse connections by jumping.

Before I'd have that in game, I'd rather have no jump effects at all, or at least I'd want to be able to turn them off completely. Because the "brown-out" adds absolutely zero to the gameplay by itself. All it does is cause an eventual additional LoS blocker which won't matter for other sensor options. I think I could live without that in favour of fluent and less laggy gameplay.

And here I thought that brown out was going to be about not having enough power to fire big weapons will using JJ. Particle effects and stuff will be cool. I hope you can't disable it. Too many shooters I find I have to turn down graphics settings to be competitive.
