Having read every BT novel, (before the jihad and dark age, where my knowledge ends) I call shenanigans!
Jerimiah Rose and the Black Thorns train using thier onboard computers to simulate damage. Wolfs Dragoons does the same, all tied to a central monitoring station. The Gray Death Legion uses full simulation pods. Various house units use various training techniques. These vary from primitive sensors attached to rocks that project an image of a mech to the pilot, all the way to live fire exercises with low power lasers and "soft" rounds.
Without proper training, no soldier will last on the field. An army depends on the quality of it soldiers and the knowledge of it's commanders. A training ground in MWO only makes sense.

Comstar
Sandhurst Royal Military College
And of the course the infamous Star League Gunslinger programs that made the Clanners the excellent duelists they are.

just saying, sims, training rounds are expensive as is the upkeep on a mech running around in the field
chris
I would gladly pay for this as well as pay for with ingame currency the ability to test drive a new mech before purchasing it, kick the tires per se.

I say, in your mechbay or whatever, when you change your loadout, you should be able to activate a toggle that would quickly load you into a terrainless (holodeck anyone?) virtual room built for weapons of all ranges, with staggered targets setup at small, medium and long range. This way, a seperate room does not need to load based on your weapons, and you can test weapons of all ranges quickly to see if they perform as you like.
You shouldn't launch onto a training ground, just a virtual room from within the mech bay. You can also test out your jump capacity and running speed, etc... This virtual room would need to be loaded with things to test the entire range of 'Mech systems and modules. It is a much more simple provision than a fully loaded map with the same demo systems in place.
@EDMW, BRAVO! Graduation from one of these military academies might provide a way to add a specialist area to your skill tree that is specific to each school. It would certainly be nice to align yourself with the academy of your choice. +1 to you sir!

What he meant *personal* field training not academy or VR pod.Taking a mech to a spin without a commander.Sure just take the 11 000 000 cbill mech and went where you want shoot your guns.
Maybe a Training course server or House academy map would do.

I agree that a training room would be beneficial. Yes, those of you who join a Faction, will probably be trained by someone in your House. However, a place that new players, (totally new to Mecha games altogether, and yes, we DO want to get and retain their interest) can go, and find someone that will help walk them through, would be a great asset if we want to expand upon our player base.

You could famillarize yourself with your mech and/or train some tactics without disturbing 'normal' matches.
Only a subset of all maps should be available, so you still have maps you can't prepare for.
Still, having special training courses available later would be great.

Field training is about as common as infantry or armor training - what do you think pilots are supposed to do when they're not in a warzone? It's not like BattleMechs are fragile sports cars that need to be kept in the 'Bay to prevent them from self-destructing. Hell, there are 'Mechs that are several centuries old by the late 3040s.
