I am really looking forward to a new MW game. I've played every one going way back to Crescent Hawks Revenge to MechCommander. This F2P business makes me edgy as well and I hope they don't muck it up by going P2Win. If they do they can count on not getting any of my dollars. If it was a reg title I could be persuaded to shell out $60 and then another $10 a month if they went with a sub model like any other MMO. I don't know which one would make them more cash, but I know which one I'm more comfortable with.

P.S. Played the **** out of Living Legends too.

I was always a starcraft guy, except for the red alert games, I've never been fond of command and conquer. (though the only one I played a lot of was 2)

I love the red alert games. 3 was decent, at least, though 2 is my favorite.

Command & Conquer 4 turned a great RTS franchise into a Pokemon style MMO game where you have to unlock your full military force and unit upgrades. The game was rushed by EA due to lack of time and funds devoted to development. You start off with small tech tree units (infantry, scouts, few tanks) and you have to gain experience to unlock the big guns and tech.

The problem with that was there was no system to organize the lower ranked players from those who unlocked everything.

You still gained experience for however long you lasted out in the field, but many players cried foul.

THAT being said, I just need to be assured that there is some heart in the Mechwarrior franchise and make sure there are no "shortcuts". I have waited TOO long just to see my other favorite franchise come out losing.

Though I'm tempted to, I won't just disregard MW:O, because I've really wanted a new MW game. I loved MW2, Ghost Bear's Legacy, MW2 Mercs, and MW3, even MW4. I won't lie, though, F2P concerns me.

I cannot recall a single F2P dev/publisher who has ever publicly announced their game to be pay-to-win. They ALL say their game will not be P2W (because otherwise people wouldn't play if they couldn't pay). That doesn't mean it hasn't happened. Battlefield Heroes was mentioned earlier in this thread. There was also Might & Magic: Heroes Kingdoms which rapidly showed gaps between players who paid for diamonds and those who did not.

I know that F2P can also be done well, but it seems to happen far less often than the failures. I only hope that this one is done well, because I really, really want a new MW game. That trailer got me so excited a couple years back.

The biggest issue for me with C&C 4 was its connectivity. I dunno about most of you, but I could barely play the game when it was first released without getting disconnected. Not sure if its EA's fault or not, as I spoke to other players about this and they had the same problem.

I know this is a little off the main thread topic, but that was the biggest reason I didn't purchase C&C 4. I didn't want to have to rely on EA to keep the game's servers up (especially since they'd been shutting down so many servers within 3 years of game release).

Edited for formatting/grammar.

I agree. Having a pure multiplay online game is no fun if you can't even connect for reasons beyond your control. Thats why I made the Starcraft 2 system reference because even if you are disconnected, you can still play a skirmish game (similar to the MW3 style) or the SP campaign.

Back to the point: Buy the game straight up ($60 bucks, dont care), start of with some fake money, buy the mech I want (not rent it), let me blast and salvage some other blasted mech so i can earn my way up the weight class (its an honorable claim to the Battletech fiction franchise), give a buddy a mech for his birthday, and blast some Clanners into the ground.

LOL is good example of the F2P model. However there are plenty of bad examples. Take World of Tanks. There isn't much in the game you can buy that is an outright advantage (there are some small boosts) Almost all the vehicles and upgrades *can* be bought with in game money. (The premium ones aren't great) However you cant play the big tanks without losing in game money due to ammo cost. Realistically its not possible to play at the top level without paying except in spurts. Mechwarrior seems primed to go down that path more than LOL's path. Lets hope they really make it so you can play without in a ton of cash. I just hope they come up with a more creative method to keep everyone from constantly running assault mechs than making the repair and ammo costs so high that you can old do it every once in awhile.

definitely rampant scaremongering at the moment, besides if you'd have paid for a £40 release why not just buy the 'p2lol' content anyway?
your comments make no sense.

Personally I would like to buy the game once, be done with it, and not have to rent anything due to the economy.

Because that $60 runs out in a month or two and you end up paying $30 a month to keep up under a p2w model. I'd rather have the straight up subscription model where we know the playing field is level. Very few games are able to make f2p work and instead end up p2w in order to get more people buying.

While I would like them to take notes of how a WoT matches play (as in, all roles are equally important rather than game being decided on how many heavies a team has), I agree that I hope they follow the LoL method when it comes to the F2P part.

Its p2w. go try it. There realistically aren't rolls in the game other than heavy and artillery. Basically if you're a non paying player you end up in tier 5-6 tanks most of the time and play cannon fodder for the players above you that you many times can't damage.

At least in battletech even a light mech is dangerous if ignored long enough.

How would people feel if MWO went the turbine hybrid model route?

Sub for $15.00 you get everything, otherwise you can purchase access content seperately without subbing. (even better, turbine gives subbers 500 'turbine points' a month which generally covers what little in the store a subber might want, like extra storage, cosmetic stuff, etc)

Its a good model, really isn't much of anything in their store that is "P2W"
