All it sounds like it less wait, more fight time. Meta game bonus versus an in game/fight bonus. It's really not going to tip the scale, for example...
You buy a gauss rifle to add to your mech, bam you don't have to salvage one or buy one with in game currency. My gauss rifle isn't going to do any more damage then yours....and on top of that you may pilot a light mech...good luck to me hitting you with my real money bought item.
It's not, my weapon does X more damage then your game bought one.
I believe the dev's when they say no pay to win.
Could be. Or it could be that they design the process of getting equipment without real cash to be such a pain in the *** that you have to end up paying anyway if you don't want to go nuts grinding. A lot of "F2P" games are like that, it wouldn't surprise me if the devs go with the model that seems to work for others (I have a hunch that they might be in it for the money
If they don't, so much the better, but this ambiguous line from the last blog post doesn't reassure me.

It has been done successfully before, and games that are pay to play have been done terribly before.
At the very least, if the game sucks, then you don't lose anything.for trying it.

That trailer few years back looked Kick ***. Now its a P2W game. Should of been a retail game for $49.99 I would of Bought it Day One Via Pre Order on Steam...
If I were to win you will pay me.

I think they can make it work.
- Nostalgic or Prototype mechs that do not offer superiority
- Maps that are developed after the game has come out
- Paintjobs and logos for "role players"
- Website/Clan related 'benefits' that do not affect gameplay
- Cockpit trinkets (fuzzy dice, sound system)
- Give you a sense of 'status' like colored names on the scoreboard/lobby
Selling this kind of thing wouldn't affect gameplay in a negative way for non-paying customers but give incentive to purchase items. You could also pool in money for, say, your clan. Maybe clans/guilds/houses could have "hubs", like a jumpship. 10$ total to buy your clan a Leviathan? Sure, why not.
That said, I would rather this just be a retail game you buy on Steam or at the store. It would feel more like we are getting a true Mechwarrior and not some side-project. No offense.

"Ekman also promises that while players will be able to buy items with real money, nobody can buy anything that will confer a tactical advantage. “Anything that would affect or give your a tactical advantage, you can’t purchase with real cash. You have to earn that by playing the game,” he says."
edit: blast, ninja-ed
Beleive it or not, I would consider paying money for vanity stuff, but refuse to pay money into a game that is P2W.

QFT. You can spend all the money in the world on the best mech and equipment, but real-life skills will still win the day. It's a first-person mech sim, if you suck at piloting a mech, you're gonna lose.

Now thats a money-making idea with the battletech crowd - "Use the original design of an "unseen" mech - Just 9.99$ each!!!!" They'll get tabletop collectors paying just so they can play with the model

So From that you dont actually get Mechs you Rent them.
From the start you get some Crappy Scout mech as you play you get In game currency to use to "Rent" mechs for 5 Days. If you pay X Money you keep it forever. While People that pay X dollars for said mech you will be placed in games with people with crappy scout mechs.
Issues...........
