I think it could work if you used precision mode to smooth the curves out.

I'd use it more to just look around the cockpit though.

I don't know about using to aim the arms, but I can see it working. It would take a lot of getting used to. I'd love for TrackIR to be supported, but admittedly I'd only use it for looking around the cockpit and of course checking my surroundings. I'd rather use a hat-switch for aiming the arm reticule.

Since now we know that all valuable combat information is contained on the HUD, which is stabilized to the head movements - there is no big utilitarian point in TrackIR, other than immersion.

pressing a button and free veiwing with a mouse will be both quicker and less involved, Like all virtual stuff its a step backwards from the simple action of a mouse/joystick. On a sit in simulator yes - for my pc no.

True i haven;t used it, seen it used tho and the guy looked like he was trying to break his neck to see a landing strip. I dont know about you but i rarely move my head while playing games. Also have a wii and that is just fail for anything accurate at all. It's a novelty.

I don't move my head much when using the TrackIR and can see things fine, but that's because I have mine configured properly unlike the guy you were watching apparently. You can make it as sensitive as you want with the software provided. I wouldn't say it's a novelty because everyone I know that has given it a chance has said they can't play a game that supports it without it.

I use it a lot with my flightsims... A lot depends on the quality of your webcam and how you sensitivity configured.

Guys, as i told it already - do not confuse the rough head tracking with fine weapon aiming. And do not confuse the NaturalPoint TrackIR with its free analogues, which are based on webcams - original TrackIR is far more accurate and faster than those, but even original can't provide the accuracy enough to aim the weapons.

Looking at the raw data from the track IR 5 camera it looks like it might be accurate enough now. I just think you'd get all sorts of cramps in your neck trying to use it like that.

It was mentioned that the other monitors not readily visiable do have secondary and tertiary information. Being able to glance at a monitor and check your heatsinks would be useful.

But. you're correct, it isnt a HUGE game making feature, but it would be nice for immersion.

TrackIR is amazing in games like ARMA2 and Flight sims. True game changers. I've never had to "Break my neck" in order to use it. Its actually quit easy once you get over the slight initial learning curve and set it up how you like it,

I have TrackIR5, and have tried it. (Yes TrackIR for MWO all the way btw, love it).

Maybe if someone had Microcontrol on their neck muscles but:

If you set on on super sensitive, that means you have to JUST. Barely. Move. Your. Neck. To be accurate.

If you set it on unsensitive, you'd have to really "Guide" your head around. with the mouse, I can go top corner to bottom corner in about second. Try doing that with your head. It would really be NeuroHelmetish... but in practice... nah.


Edit: For sims, TrackIR is not a novelty, its a game changer. Won't fly without it.

You wouldn't use the head to aim though. You would use the head to look around in the cockpit, and the HUD in front to aim.

Mechs don't turn around so fast, so being able to glance to the sides quickly using your head (with TrackIR) would give you a better situational awareness, as well as better immersion.

It wasn't confirmed yet - that we can move the head without arms reticle being moved too. And judging by screenshots and gameplay video - current FOV is enough to overwatch all cockpit glass at once, without moving the head - so there is no big point in TrackIR at the moment. :P

But if there is some information at the cockpit MFD's, which is really valuable in combat - then TrackIR might be very useful. But we don't know at the current moment if such an info is really presented at these MFD's.
