Robot is the family name of any thing robotic, manned or unmanned. Mech is the name of Robots from the battletech universe.
Just like a helicopter isn't an Areoplane, glider or space shuttle, they are names of a types of flying machine.

well why didn't u then? or are u just trolling peoples forums for fun.
There is no differance really between Mechs and zoids apart from the fictional universes they come from, they are both robots and uninformed people aren't wrong to call them robots, they just don't know/care the names to that certian set of Robots.
FYI Mech is short for the word Mechanoid which means mechanical humanoid. so even given that most of the Mechs in battletech don't look very human. do we still call them Mechs?
of course we do, its their name!!

Robiť means "to work"
Thus Robots = workers, meaning mechanical workers,
Mechanical arms on assembly lines are called robots. Remotely controled machines made for the purpose of work (army robots deactivating bombs,...)
Mechwarriors are not robots, they do not work, they are vehicles just like tanks, or helicopters,.... you don't call an airplane a robot.
However if mechwarriors would have their own AI, or were remotely controlled, then they could be called robots.

Cyborg: Human brain and body with artifical replacement(s) of human 'parts' (up to whole the body except the human brain.)
Mech: A machine, directly controlled (piloted) by a human being.
-> The famous 'Terminator' is by definiton a robot.
-> The Star Trek Borgs are cyborgs.
-> The 'Universal Soldiers' are cyborgs as well.
-> Transformers are robots.

i love how u have gone for the root meaning of the word not the modern day meaning, which in no way helps in this topic.
my point of fact is i'm a plumber by trade, "plumber" taken from the latin word of "plumbum" meaning Lead (metal) and/or depending on where u read or who u ask "plumb-bob" which was a pointed lead weight for checking things where plumb. as plumbers no longer use lead (in some cases its illegal to) the root meaning of the word has nothing to do with modern plumbers.
i belive that this is the case here as the word "Robot" is used far more wide spread than just the root meaning of worker, it is now a family name used to descibe any automated or mechanical machinary.

Čapek should've just called it a laboř and be done with it. No misconceptions that way.
Generally speaking, the word still describes an automated machine that can "sense" the enviroment and interact with it with some kind of individuality. For instance, a factory robot fulfills these requirements because it recognizes it's moves, can interpret them to do the same thing again and has a programmable UI installed that can be programmed to carry out the task it carried out before, or the one you "told" it to make (by programming it in such way).

i'm not sure if ur agreeing or disagreeing with me here

i think alot of people are missing the point of the OP, he asked why people why call mechs robots and not mechs and as i've said its just down to the masses using the robot to describe a mechanical machine, for the people saying "u wouldn't call an areoplane a robot" (apart from Macross) no of course u wouldn't as it already has a family name of Aeroplane with sub types like bomber, fighter, recon. transport, command centre and so forth. its just being overly picky to correct someone when they say "did u see that plane" and then u say "well, it was actually a transporter plane" and then stood there and listed what makes a transporter a transporter and not just any old plane.
what we know as Mech's, Labor's, Zoids and Gears are all robots, its just as Nerds we are overly protective of these words, or would u prefer it if people who didn't know anything this culture started playing this game and saying "wow cool Transformers" i think a few of u might have a heart attack.
let them call them mechs, robots, as their not wrong, their just not fully right either. but thats better than them getting it totally wrong
