sometimes i do and sometimes i don't use teamspeak (either the unofficial or the servers of units i have a history of sorts with).
the current setup actually does not seem to favor dropping as a ts group when you can only do a few or when you are taking a test config out for a spin. consider that at some load periods your team will lose one or more discons or black/cartoon screens, the team is already short without your experimental 9 flamer hunchie (or similar) meant to prove/disprove some observed hypothesis. btw, don't tell me they are not there, you have to have been in enough games on coms to know i am right.
also, when i am only expecting to drop 3 or less games, i usually don't get on ts, mostly because of the disappointment you hear/observe in the teammates when you are really not getting enough time together to get used to each other. no, i'm not an uber-pilot, but losing one means you drop short or have to go looking and add another (yes, i have been on the team side of that also, really rather not do that myself). consider it the ts equivalent of giving the last mech the choice to power down, it is the honorable thing to do.
as for units, while those i drop with can attest that i am both polite and respectful, i am not sure i can say the same (OMO is pretty good about that, but that is their history (in total honesty, here, i was a member shortly after they formed MANY years ago and courtesy was one of the founding ideals)). strong combat units, well led, whom i have had the passing chance to drop with and many more i will likely drop with, but some of the conversations on ts are a wee bit less than i would prefer to cast my lot with if i had to listen to them more than an hour or so. yes, there are also back story issues that have me waiting for a WD faction option or Wolf itself (crusader, of course; if any of you remember the fluff i dropped in mw4 or elsewhere, still the same Patrick Carnes), so it isn't all about the other units out there right now.
i don't know that i have answered your original question, but perhaps i have given you a glimpse into a bit more complexity than the simple question asked.

And lets be honest. I can take 8 random guys who played competitively in a no respawn league from MW4 and they can beat 70-80% of the guys here that team on voice chat without voice chat. This game is not a big departure from the last. The same tactics and playstyles still hold true. You move as a group. You never run off alone. Never expose yourself in the open. You concentrate fire and support each other. Shoot what you see everyone else is shooting. Target the most damaged areas. Push as a group. When you are crit, fall to the back of the group... If pugs just follow these simple rules, they would be more successful against teams on voice chat.

My list of reasons:
- I do use voice chat, but only a private Ventrilo server among my friends or guildmates.
- C3 is a good idea, and hopefully it will be worth using someday. Right now it is not. Currently it is in its own beta state and my friends and I have found it to be buggy and unreliable. It got about 2 days to impress us away from our vent server, and it failed completely. The interface is also a bit too complicated for my liking. We don't need all of that extra stuff and features to simply enable voice chat for an MWO team.
- I dislike teamspeak. I was surprised to see it's being used here. I don't think I have used teamspeak in about 7 years. Ventrilo is still the best voice software available, and if it were an official ventrilo server instead, I might have actually used it.
- Honestly, I am just not that interested in hearing random strangers talk, eat chips, sing, breathe into the mic, etc. I only want to join voice chat with people I can trust not to be annoying. With random strangers comes the anonymity of the internet, and way too many people out there abuse that fact.
- I like to come and go. A match typically only lasts 5-10 minutes. That creates plenty of opportunities to pause and do something else for a bit. If I am in a team using voice chat, I will feel obligated to ready up ASAP between each match to keep things rolling for everyone. If I am launching by myself and have no voice chat commitments, I can freely come and go as I please between matches. I can go AFK, I can stop to check these forums, I can submit a bug report, I can go out for pizza, whatever. Personally, I have college homework that I may stop and work on between matches.
- I am not interested in joining a premade and going pugstomping. I honestly miss the days when grouping was broken. Matches were so much more fun, unpredictable, and in some ways more balanced back then.
With all of that said, I really wish people like those who create topics like this would get some common sense and be a little more courteous. Having the option for voice chat available is one thing. Browbeating and bullying people into getting on teamspeak is a whole other matter. People should be free to not join voice if it suits them.

Dude, never be afraid of that. There are alot of good units out there that take beginers and provide them an opportunity to learn and grow while working alongside experienced players. We were all beginers once.... Welcome and I will see you Dirtside....

No offense intended, just saying its a single train of thought that normally drives such topics.
Think of the big picture.

Maybe when Mechlab matures and (hopefully) has some sort of lobby (segregated by faction element/corps perhaps?) I'll be more inclined to group up and get on comms. The current implementation of grouping and dropping seems a bit cumbersome.

Okay, in all seriousness, I already have several voice clients and I hate having to install another one to play. I also hate foul language, and even the nicest guys will start swearing at first contact.
Also, stop using the stupid "PUG" acronym. You're soloing.
I solo because I don't have much time to play, thus why I am still in a Commando after the last reset. I should be able to afford an Awesome again in a month, and my Awesome set-up in three months.
