Lone Wolves, Noobs, Puggers why do you play that way.

-I have a family. My attention is splits and im usually quite casual about my gaming. Its distracting and insulting to be on voice chat (think of all the aholes talking on phones or to family over games with fixed chat) and at any given moment im having a conversation and playing.

I'm a adult, with a family including a wife and young children.
My gaming PC is in the living room.
I need to be able to hear and interact with my wife and children while gaming - I'm not going to be a **** and isolate myself, ignoring my family while playing.
My wife and children watch TV in that same living room.
I can't have voice chat going on while playing because it's extremely distracting when watching TV (quiet game noises are much less so than people having conversations).
I can't talk, because again, nobody wants to hear one-sided conversations when they're watching TV or whatever.
I can't just wear a headset and listen, because that leads to me ignoring my family.
Also, my gaming tends to happen in very short bursts. I've got very little time available for gaming (6 matches in an evening are a lot, and they never, ever happen one after another. So, this means even if I could squeeze in some headset time, it would suck for the people playing with me: "Afk for another random amount of time while I change a potentially explosive diaper/make my daughter a sandwich/fish my daughter out of the toilet/cook dinner/take out the trash/whatever".
These threads always really highlight people how people who are not parents don't understand what parent life is like.
I love gaming with VOIP. It's much better than without, but I can't do it - my families happiness is more important than that, and I'm still having lots of fun playing as is. I wish I had a good opportunity to do it, but it just doesn't happen.

Because I can't ******* find any adress.
How about adding that option to your poll?
I have the same issue. I've tried about a half dozen times, but whenever I'm trying to find the TS servers I just can't find anything other than the "clan" types of channels-the invite only ones.
It just ends up being so much time for no result that I've stopped trying. I can type very quickly, although I can't do it without running into buildings, etc., thus even fast typing isn't much use during a match.

The topic of the thread, "Lone Wolves, Noobs, Puggers why do you play that way." could be read as looking down on those who are not part of an organized group ...
Why I'm not part of an organized group ... I'm waiting on Community Warfare ... I don't want to commit myself to a group before I see where PGI is headed with CW. We've waited ten years, I can wait a few more months.
Now, those are not the questions in the poll, which is asking, "why don't you use voice comms?"
If I can get on a TS3 server and find a couple of guys here and there to form up a pick-up team, I will, after I build my personal experience with the game and figure out what I'm good at.
I did notice something interesting this past weekend, during the solo "tournement" ... comms improved and my personal stats improved signifcantly. Whether my better performance was due to my skill improving (probably a little) or because the coordination was better (probably a lot), I don't know ... but the little I've played this week, both the comms and my stats have degraded.
For the groups of 4 or less dropping with us PUGers ... talk to us. Let us in on your plans. Most of us are not out for personal glory or actively trying to make your game experience worse. And just because we're not on voice chat doesn't mean you can't send us a friend request and invite us to join your group for the next game.

I do love playing this game, but the forums and web site are horrible for searching and finding useful information. I easily set up TeamSpeak and got it working, but cannot find a TS site where people go to play MWO. I added one I found, na1.mech-connect.net, but no one talks in general so I am kinda lost. I don't think it's good for a new player to just jump around to a room or dropship while people are playing and interrupt them with newb questions.
I admit I haven't used TS since WoW, and I feel like a newb saying this, I don't know how to 'join' another group or where to go so we can drop together in MWO.
If there were a central source for this information that was easily locatable, maybe in game or outside, more of us 'NOOBS' would join in. I certainly know the benefits of in-game communication and would like to participate.

The Comstar servers (that one you've tried) has a 'Looking For Group' room not far below the entry room, pop yourself in there and either a: someone will come looking to fill a spot or b: there will end up being four of you in there, and you will form a group

Lumping together those three unrelated things will get you a variety of different answers.
I'll just focus on lone wolves. You shouldn't be asking why they play that way, but instead ask why you (or other players) want to play as a group.

Yep. My computer is in the family room, and I'm watching TV with my kids (in the reflection of the upper left shiny black part of my display ) and I'm chatting with my wife. I admit to the occasional "WOO" if I get a good kill, but talking is not a good option.

Listening to target calls is more valuable than discussing the various loadout changes you've made on your mech during games.

I also think that voice chat is not the ultimate sollution out there. It doesn't make bad players better and it might even be confusing for some.
I, for my part, have problems understanding what other people say sometimes (different language and slang,...).
If someone writes "ECM E6" in text chat, it is a clear information with pretty much zero room for misinterpretation. That's the advantage of text chat over voice chat.
And if players were more aware of their surroundings and their teammates, there wouldn't be so many problems.
I've seen so many players ignore ECM mechs flanking them just because they didn't have a red triangle over their head, or players who oviously are not cappable of finding the mech shooting at them from the side while spectating.
Almost every match there will be a group that runs into an enemy group and doesn't say a word of position, enemy strengh or that they need help. You just see 4 dead players suddenly.

On the flip side, I do have some friends that I play with from time to time on our own TS3 server, when I can pull them away from WoW.

I don't care who you are, what you think, and have no desire to listen to people whine. I'd rather guess, honestly, even if it means a loss.
Something like this ... I just find it annoying to have to listen to a bunch of random guys. I don't know them, I'm not interested to learn to know them and I do not care about them. I do not feel I have anything to share either that I can't say in short sentances using text chat.
Also, some guys, at least half of the random chaps I've talked to when I did try some teamspeaking in another game, have have cheap mics or their sound settings so bad it's just a pain listening to that distorted noise. Combine this with some peoples voices, babies crying in the background and wifes yelling and I rather just mute the whole thing.
Finally, english isn't my native language, and though I know it pretty well especially when typing, I tend to stutter and not find the right words when I have to voice chat. I guess one could see voice chatting as practicing my english, but meh, I just rather avoid it as it takes away from the relaxation that should be with gaming.
I was hoping MW would be a COOP game as initially announced, with a full blown campaign you could play with your friends, as this is what I preferably play. If that was the case I'd use Teamspeak with my RL buddies. I'm here for the immersion of driving big Mechs, not the competative PvP. Teamspeaking with random chaps takes away from that immersion.
