I have it confirmed that in the near future the joystick will be at full power. That will take care of the key whackers.

Where can I find this USER.CFG file? Or is this fix or mod obsolete now?
I searched for USER.CFG and it came up with nothing. I have Win. 7

Mighty Virtus: Use Notepad to create a text file and save it in Mech Warrior Online main directory. NB when saving make sure you select ALL FILES (*.*) as the file type option and type in user.cfg. Otherwise Notepad saves it as user.cfg.txt, which needs to be renamed to user.cfg to work.

Play with the basic values as given in the beginning of the thread, note you will have to restart the client to test out changes in the values you put in.

Paste this in and play around with the values to taste

cl_joystick_gain = 8 ;cl_joystick_gain = 13; cl_joystick_gain = 5
cl_joystick_sensitivity = 1.10
;cl_joystick_sensitivity = 1.25 ;setting was 0.7/1.05/1.14
cl_joystick_throttle_range = 0
cl_joystick_invert_throttle = 1
;cl_joystick_invert_pitch = 1
; cl_joystick_invert_yaw = 0
; cl_joystick_invert_turn = 0
; i_joystick_deadzone = 0.25 the syntax may be incorrect
i_joystick_buffered = 0 ;supposed to increase sensitivity

Note please do some reading so you have an idea what these values do. sensitivity increases to decrease the response, Gain increases to increase response.

Please elaborate. As in, what does "full power" mean?

Hammerhai,
I tried to do what you said, but upon saving the info in the main directory of MWO, it said "C:\Program Files (x86) \Piranha Games\Mechwarrior Online\user.cfg.txt You do not have permission to save in this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission..."

I'm logged in as Administrator on my PC, I dont understand why this action is not allowed. Any suggestions?

Ok, I am at a loss. Been ages since I fooled around with permissions.

Are you on your own computer?
If so, who set up your computer? Ask him for help.
A work computer? Contact your admin.
What Anti Virus do you run?

You will basically have to edit the file permissions to allow you to save in that location. And you will have to make sure you have both read and write access to \Mech Warrior Online.

Taken from the Win 7 help file is the following: Good luck

If you get a message denying access when you try to open a file, here are some options you can try:

  • Check the permissions of the file or of the folder the file is saved in. Here's how:

    • Right-click the file or folder, and then click Properties.

    • Click the Security tab.

    • Under Group or user names, click your name to see the permissions you have.
      To open a file, you need to have read permission. For more information on permissions, see What are permissions

Virtus, here's the step-by-step I recommend for .cfg file: (should be easy)

1 goto: C:GamesPiranha GamesMechWarrior Online
2. click 'new text document' on the taskbar
3. name it: user.cfg and save
4. open it with notepad to add lines, and be sure to save it when closing it.
5. MWO client needs to be restarted (if already running) for changes to take effect.

Full power simply means that everything will work as it should. They have not finished the software yet to make that possible so no matter what most do its just not right at this time, but it will be. cfg. files only take you so far not to where it will be when the coding is ready.

Hmm...Are they going to add proper first-order input device support AND break zero-order input device support so that mouse/keyboard will become worse than a joystick? Cause if zero-order controllers (trackball/mouse) will work as they are now, joystick users will be at a disadvantage no matter what.

I only have one like to give, but all my upvotes are belong to you! Couldn't put it in less words if I tried. I have put it to a lot more words as you have probably seen, but may be new to others visiting this thread. Controls Demystified(?)

For anyone with moderate machining and electronic skills you *can fabricate a fully functioning joystick type controller called master/slave, which comes in 2 flavors. 'Replica', that describes the same exact motions as the mech or 'nongeometric analogic', where master described similar but not identical motion to the slave.

These native zero-order positioning devices are common in high end robotics such as teleosurgery, where money-is-no object. An example nongeometric master/slave control joystick for MWO would be Foust's modded Thrustmaster T16000m or a Steel Battalion controller running proper drivers. An example of a master/slave/replica controller for MWO would be the joystick I made for mech piloting. I'm just about to cross the 5000 match mark on this hardware.

Here's what master/slave/replica control looks like as an example:

Do all these apply?
Can you only use some of them?

I ask because I recently got a Thrustmaster T. Flight Hotas X to finally replace my out of date stick (will have to send it to the old recycling graveyard, it served me so well, sniff :( ). Everything works except for 2 functions.

1 - The right side stick controls torso movement but it is WAY TOO SLOW. I need something to make it move better and am guessing one or more of these entries may be it.

2 - I do not keep the joystick plugged in so every time I tried using it, I plug it in and the calibration on the throttle is off. Center is not 0 speed, it is backward movement. I have to constantly reset calibration in Vista before it works near correct.

I am only looking for thing to fix those two items and do not want to add something that may mess up anything else since only those 2 things are problems.

Thanks for any responses.

Awesome! I added these to the CFG file and now the LAUNCHER wont even start. Idk what to do anymore. I loved this game franchise forever and was excited for a new game. Too bad I'll never be able to play comfortably if at all.

You're problem can be solved, but you need to provide enough information for us to figure out what went wrong before anyone can tell you how to fix it.

For starters, you don't have a CFG file, and files have to be 100% exactly correctly named, so if your file is not named: user.cfg (located in C:\Games\Piranha Games\MechWarrior Online) that is likely your problem.

What exactly did you add to this file? (copy/paste it so we see exactly what it is and not an interpretation)

The file actually was not named USER.CFG, I copied and pasted the text in the OP and adjusted the gain and sensitivity as suggested to see if there was any difference. If you say that the file name should be user.cfg this could very well have been my problem because the file was simply named "user"

Unfortunately servers are undergoing maintenance, so I can't really test it out at the moment. My game actually has been working since I last posted, but the file name wasn't 100% so I just fixed it and will report back as soon as I can test.

Your file should not be named USER.CFG, but rather user.cfg

Always assume files are case sensitive and never ever substitute capitol letters for lowercase. It's not always case sensitive, but most of the time these things are so it's best to just assume it is every single time and 100% precisely copy file names. use copypaste if it helps, but don't start making things up like adding capitol letters where there are not any.

For the first step you should run the MWO client repair tool to get rid of any junk you generated in the process of naming files the wrong thing. There's no telling what nonsense just got injected into your installation (maybe none, maybe lots), so you need to verify that is not borked first to eliminate this variable.

After the client repair tool finishes, then follow the step by step instructions for generating a user.cfg file as laid out in my previous post: http://mwomercs.com/...21#entry2969521

Reposting from another topic,

Did a couple of tries and discovered this.

When I entered these lines in USER.CFG:

cl_joystick_gain = 8
cl_joystick_sensitivity = 0.75
cl_joystick_throttle_range = 0
i_joystick_deadzone = 0.0005
cl_joystick_deadzone = 0.0005
The right HOTAS stick responds better, still not as fast as the mouse but good enough for use and much better than default.

The throttle still has a problem determining center, somehow I think this is in Windows, I mentioned how I had to recalibrate every time I startup Windows to fix this. If I don't, center according to game is forward of actual center.

Problem: when I left the game, I had problems in Windows. Everywhere I moved the mouse, buttons and items on the Start menu would activate just from mousing over with no button presses. I tried opening a file in Notepad, once opened it started auto entering new lines like Enter was stuck. Also it kept opening copies of the file until I removed the Highlight in Explorer. I had to Shutdown to make all this stop last night and left it due to time.

Today, Windows worked fine so I checked Omicron and saw errors with all lines except this one:

i_joystick_deadzone = 0.0005
I removed everything but that line and tried again, the right stick still responds better and the throttle still has the centering problem. Apparently all that is needed to fix the right stick is that one line for now and it appears to be the only line that works.

I tried putting the other 4 back in but changed the starting cl to i, they still made errors so removed them again. At least I can get good right stick response, now I just have to fix the throttle centering on Windows startup.

S!

I gave up on using a joystick in this game. Instead using the Warthog's Throttle and CH ProPedals for power/turning + a gaming mouse for aiming. Works like a charm.

Ok, sorry for the late answer: Omicron flags some stuff which is functional as errors which is, in fact, functional. Notably the joystick commands. If you got the command from an official source, it should work. But please stick to the official syntax !

And cl_throttle_range in fact does register stop slightly forward of center on my HOTAS as well, sorry there is nothing you can do to fix that

I'm running windows 8.1 and need some clarification on this:

1 goto: C:GamesPiranha GamesMechWarrior Online
2. click 'new text document' on the taskbar
3. name it: user.cfg and save
4. open it with notepad to add lines, and be sure to save it when closing it.
5. MWO client needs to be restarted (if already running) for changes to take effect.

I can create a new folder, is this the same as 'new text document' ?

No. A Folder (aka Directory or sub-directory) is a sub-division of your hard drive that can contain files. A text document would be a file that could reside in a folder.
