Except when you pilot the Raven or Dragon, you aren't giving the team (generally) an Atlas to counter your Awesome... While the mech itself is in fact mobile, that is about the only thing it can do (and even that not well) at least in the Raven the opposition is stuck in another light. With the Dragon you could argue that it just gives the other team a streak cat/guass cat/LRM boat so that makes the Raven/Centurion arguably the best choice.
All that said, ultimately, it's a game, play how you want. If you dig the Awesome, don't let some forum post tell you not to pilot it. Just don't be that surprised when EVERYONE is coring you with the greatest of ease.

Trials are broken, matchmaking is broken... it does not matter at all who drops with what, founders and premade always win. Choosing a even worse mech then the awesome will not help.
Its irrelevant if you get thrown against a maxed atlas or a maxed catapult or a maxed hunchback. Trials will always be the punching bag for the real mechs.
My team picked all trial mechs and won, so they can't be that bad.

It was... you guessed it... Awesome!
We lined up and then advanced on a single line...
When we reached the other end of the crater, the entire team (that was aware of us being a premade) was hiding and we almost walked right past them. They had 2 Atlas, 2 custom Awesomes and 4 trial Awesomes. It was soo fun! (if you look at the minimap above, they were all in F5 so you can see how close we were before we saw them)
But it was too Awesome. The game crashed for 2 of our guys in the middle of the brawl and the end result:
And to the 3 guys in the bottom. I'm sorry that we focused on you initially and that you didn't get the time to have as much fun.

This isn't unique at all. Trial heavies will get matched with streak and gauss cats, trial mediums will get matched with hunchback laser+SRM boats and gauss+SSRM cents, trial lights will get matched against jenners that can effectively use all 4-6 lasers.
I'll echo what others have said. The AWS-8T is by far the best trial mech there is now, and is one of the best stock variants in the game.

I prefer the cent over the awesome as far as trials go even if the cent runs hotter and only has a single lrm10.

OK, let's break it down:
-The trial Raven has the same top speed as the trial Dragon and a weapon loadout that would have a hard time taking out another light mech even if it had enough heatsinks, which it doesn't
-The trial Centurion has a small LRM that usually cannot penetrate AMS, and again with the energy weapons and not enough heatsinks
-The trial Dragon has the same small LRM and energy weapons with few heatsinks, but also an AC5, which is perhaps the worst weapon in the game due to a combination of it being medium-ranged, hard to aim, and slow-moving
-The trial Awesome is the best of the bunch, but is basically an LRM boat with ammunition problems; if you get lucky with all of the LRMs and then have time for your heatsinks to cool down a few times while shooting your lasers, you might be able to take out a light or medium mech
This isn't baseline, this is intentionally ill-equipped. None of the trial mechs are capable of filling any sensible role in a combat lance: The light can't scout, the medium can't flank, the heavy can't give fire support, and the assault can't hold the line. Their only function is to serve as targets for properly equipped mechs.

Next thing is for every ill equipped trial a fully customizable (founder-) mech can be fielded which may be the heaviest mech in the weight bracket, for the awesome its the worst choice since its a 80 ton mech against a 100 ton mech.
Yet the awesome is the only mech who is in itself somewhat worth. This just shows how utterly broken the trialmech system is as whole.

Honestly, the problem isn't the mech, it is the skill of the pilot. Alot of people playing trial are brand new to the game. No matter which trial they are using, they are going to suck because there is a fairly steep learning curve.
Also the Awesome is probably the most newbie friendly of the trial mechs with LRMs and enough heat sinks to bleed off most of the heat of the 2 Lg. Lasers. You actually should be happy that newbies are using this mech because they are probably more effective with this mech than they would be with the other mechs.

When the open beta wipe happened, I looked at the 4 mechs, saw the raven, and decided to run with it even though its configured poorly. Total slaughter. A slow light with poor weaponary and not even a TAG fulfills no roles, and is nothing but a free kill.
I took a look at the other three mechs's loadouts and decided to go with the awesome. It fulfills the fire support role decently. Sure its outgunned by a customized assault of any sort, but thats why its a trial.
All the people comparing the trial Awesome to customized Atlases are entirely correct in their argument, and also entirely missing the point that trial mechs (stock mechs) obviously wont compare to a customized mech.

It's actually one of the few designs where it can take an astonishingly high amount of damage to it's backside due to it's armor configuration. I've literally ran past opponents so they'll take potshots at my back, then turn and fire my lasers since the arm mounts mean I don't have to shift as much bringing them to bear. Also, twisting to spread laser damage works just fine, same as you would for an Atlas. If they're dumb enough to keep a straight-on frontal angle at laser range when they can fire just fine from a more glancing one....well, they deserve to get cored.
The Trial Awesome is brutal until it's missiles run out- then it's just modestly effective. Still good enough to kill an Atlas while the ammo holds out, but it lacks the ability to hit hard for a sustained period. As I've said, it can kill at least one target before the missiles are gone, after which it's a pair of large lasers with a decent number of heat sinks for firing them- low DPS, but very sustainable. Usually, I'll lob missiles till the bays are empty, then wade in and let the strong aft armor help me push into the middle of a formation.
