When thinking of adding yet another Clan Threadnaught, always fall back on the classics!

"I think this situation absolutely requires that a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part!"

"We're just the guys to do it!"

Fetladral, I think you're onto something there, bud. That would be a really good way to deal with Clan advancement, and it doesn't leave those who want to go Clan out, either. Unfortunately, it doesn't leave those out who want to go Clan, so that puts us all back at square one with attempting to make sure all units -Houses, Clans, SIC and FRR, Periphery, and Mercenary- are filled as evenly as possible, but it would make the acquisition of the better 'Mechs and equipment a lot more difficult, which is NOT a bad way to go.

So, in summary, everyone who wants to go Clan, if the Clans are released to play, can go Clan to their heart's content. They test out, after some basic training, through a Trial of Position that will first determine if they would be a first- or second-line MechWarrior; most should turn out to be second-line. The second Trial, each for first- and second-line, determines who will be Star Colonel's, Star Captain's, Star Commander's, and Point Commander's. From whatever position an individual ends up in, they can test out periodically, I believe it varies by Clan, but the average is twice per year, for promotion, if they need to go higher, per normal Clan rules. Then, instead of getting money, they can test out for various modules and equipment for their OmniMech, and/or for a better OmniMech altogether. The Clanners life is all about trials in the lore, why not make it that way here, as well?

All this hate and fury?!?1 DANCE MY PUPPETS DANCE!!!

I find it funny all these posters telling me why I really like the Clans. I was five years old and 31st Century Combat + Ghost Bears Legacy was the coolest thing in the world lol. Then I read all the supplementary data and found their culture fascinating-one where the warrior dominates all. There isn't a single person among us who wouldn't want to challenge our boss to a Trial of Position or a Circle of Equals ;)

That being said I am surprised the moderators allow these topics to continue. There is nothing constructive discussed. Even the title implies the post will simply be complaining about other forum users, which will undoubtedly be followed by more arguing and fighting.

If I were the moderators (hint hint), I would shut down threads such as these and move any Clan related topics that don't directly relate to MWO to the Clan section. We are content hiding in the dark corners of the forum until our time comes. And if it doesn't come, then I will be running one bada** merc unit.

This way we can all play nice and Mason Grimm can enjoy his Easter (takes a swig from a bottle of wine)

EDIT: For the record:

Out of the first 115 topics that appear in General Discussion at this moment...

6 of the topics pertain to the Clans...
2 of those threads, or 33.3% of all Clan topics, are people complaining about hearing about the Clans

One of these topics was by a new poster and is locked. The other discusses how different Clan and IS mechs should look, the other discusses the Madcat MKII, and the fourth discusses a Timberwolf redesign

So we now have six pages of people complaining about 5.21% of the topics posted in general discussion...and two of those were merely people complaining about other forum users...

Im tired of hearing about the Inner Sphere. Time to start just tossing Space Rocks at Populated Planets, We'll start with the Planets that house the Leaders of all the IS Houses. Lets see how well organized you are with your Operational Heads and Inteligences gone. Oh dont like that do you? Thats called WAR it aint pretty and it aint nice, and just Imagine the CutDown bonus I get for using just a rock. Get Ready for the Clans, we arrive this August. Surrender everything now to Avoid Massive Destruction. I have 4 hours to recruit volunteers for suicide missions to Ride Giant Space Rocks like atom bombs ala Slim Pickens.

This is awesome and also needs to go in the Mechwarrior Meme Thread

Second, I repeat my request from another similar thread that the moderators shut down threads like this. They are just arguments and fights waiting to happen. Likewise, shut down whiny Clan threads that our solahma and fresh-out-of-the-metalwomb members tend to post and direct them to the Clan section of the forums.

I would like to think there is more of a mis-communication problem between IS and Clan. It seems often the IS players will talk about how horribly broken the Clan tech is, and how many of the Clansmen/women are rushing for it because it's going to be so over-powered as to walk through a whole IS line without a scratch. Clans meanwhile have some very vocal members who claim to love the lore, culture, history, etc (And I have good reason to suspect this is true). Thing is, I find alot of IS acting like Clanners dont know how bad their tech is going to be in balancing the game. Yet so many active clanners are talking on the board, acknowledging the difference of power and how it should be handled. They recognize alot of the rules they would personally set in place would be disregarded by the players the IS seem to be afraid of, someone who activly seeks out the tech for an easy kill with little regards as to any placed 'carrots' that would be there to deter them from acting outside of Zell.

Clanners have been getting alot of flak like they went into a game that hasnt been released yet, and flooded it with game-breaking mechs just to hear the IS cry foul. By the same token, Clanners have been at time defensive of their current possition and a few have made it a case of 'feed the trollolol'.

The hard part is putting those fears the IS have to rest, and let's be truthful, until the Clan Invasion happens, it wont even be a matter that can seriously be debated. Until information regarding the clans is released, that cloud over-head isnt going anywhere.

That being said, there is absolutly no reason for any clan not to recruit. This is a game after all, and Clans/Guilds/Companies rise all the time. If someone wants to model their own after a particular piece of the fiction of Battletech, that's their own choice and an option for those who are like-minded people. If it some how concerns you that a Clan may be playing IS mechs and will suddenly move to Clan tech on day-1 avalibility, that is their choice and their right as a group. They are here for fun like everyone else, and I very much doubt you'll be shocked when it happens, and I also doubt it will affect your own IS groups in the slightest.

Lastly, let's just acknowledge something. Very little I say, you say, or anyone for that matter is going to stop people from making their own choices in how they approach the game. There are very few methods of controlling community and player behaviour alike, and the most you can do is try to be respectful and civil, but that becomes very difficult when it turns into a case of 'us vs them', and do what you can to put someone else on the defensive. And then you wonder why the thread devolves into bickering and whining with the enevitable lock-down from a mod.

Ah the joys of Lore clashing with video games.. yes its nice to be right on target but it aint gonna happen.. it cant.. they will try their best to get it close but the lore isnt going to be dead on. If there is Clan and IS on the field some day, the devs are gonna balance the play out, and im pretty sure it will have nothing to do with ToP or clan code, etc..

Going through this thread a few have brought up what matters most in any online game. Pleasing the mass of the player base, most of the time.

Just think of it as the famous book you read that had a movie made after.. or vice versa. How often are they the same :)
In MW2 (yay dialup DOS games, and lag shooting) I ran in a clan group. We had ranks in our bunch decided by the lore rules and such. The game itself back then was loose cannon on who could play what mech, but you would still see alot of IS players. Believe me once you were in the hot zone, honor and such got replaced with "kick the other teams ***!"

Watching the dev interview vids on site it is even mentioned that having the hottest tech isnt going to win the game for you.. Skill is.. so Clan or IS tech likely wont matter

"but thats not how the lore is written" yeah i know.. but this isnt a scripted movie that requires an outcome. Gonna have to get used to that fast if you want to have a game with a population. Which will have alot of players that want to get into the mech that they like and kick some.

For me Lore can take a back seat if it means having a population to shoot at ;)

I think I lost a few points off my IQ reading that because that made no sense. They are NPC's while at the same time they are players? And I havn't heard anything about there being levels at least not the kind like WoW or LOTRO

You misread that. Perhaps I wrote it poorly, so allow me to restate it. I do not think the clans will be NPC's AND player controled at the same time, it was more of an either/or statement.

I just think that if players are allowed to play a sthe clans that it will be ballanced, like in previous Mechwarrior games were Clan mechs were not vastly superior to IS mechs of similar weight class. And all of this talk about some kind of players' trade unionist type scheme where players will have to go through a 6 month training program and have an FBI background check befor ethey are given GOD -MECHS is a little silly.

If the clans become playable they will almost certainly be open to anyone who wants to join them (like every other faction) and nerfed such that they are ballanced with the inner sphere factions, since we know the game will take place in 12 vs 12 multi player matches there just will not be room for mechs or factions which are overtly more powerful then others, it would destroy game ballance.

My comment about the clans being open to anyone who is level X or higher was based on the idea that MWO will follow the World of tanks model, (which they listed in one of the dev blogs as being a major inspiration and is similar to their pilot/mech skill trees they have released) in that in-game experience and credits will be used to buy better mechs. and the assumption that If the Clan mechs are implemented as being flately superior it is likely that they will be put at the top tier in the mech tree and open to every faction, sinc ewe know also that the devs have stated that every mech will be open to every player from any faction.

Hope that clears things up Drac hunter. ;)

EDIT: you see, this is the silly ideas and thinking that I was talking about;

This is just absurd. Does anyone really think that a half sim/half arcade/action game will have that kind of barrier to entry? Name one major game that does! Even the ultra realistic ArmA does not force people who want to pilot Apaches to go to ROTC. What's next, are the Steiners going to be lead by Social generals who bougth their command with real world money?!

The IS has a bunch of great history and lore so I'm in it to enjoy the now. Relish in some fun IS stuff before the clans come and bring a new world to our front door.

I think people are over reacting to the whole Clan Tech vs IS tech. I also think people are tired of hearing about people all ready wanting the Clans when the game hasn't even reached Beta yet. I'm actually more concerned about the faction divide as it is. You have House Kurtia, House Davion, House Liao, House Marik, House Steiner, Free Rasalhague Republic, Lone Wolfs, and Merc companys. You have to realise in a Faction based games people will drift towards the winning side. I've seen it happen before where where one side wins, or has the most territory and players will move to that side, because that side is perseved as the winners.

Introducing the Clans would essentially devide the population further before there is a population. With the Clans introduced your looking at eight + groups not to mention all the sub groups created by lone wolfs and merc companies. I've noticed what looks like a patern by the Devs in there mech selection. They tend to be going for highly available designs, designs available to all groups, while having a few faction specific designs. My opinion is if the Clans are brought in its only going to be through there batlemechs, and omnimechs. Even then I think people are going to be overexagerent about not getting what they want.
