running out of ammo to soon is simply a matter of ensuring you have a proper loadout for your weapons, if you find yourself running out of ammo you should probably think about reallocating some tonnage, because you're obviously not -dying- before you're OOA XD, I'm not sure if they'll even have support drops for ammo and whatnot, so chances are pretty good once you're out, you're out, but it sounds like this MWLL is not really anything like MWO,

I see you are not familiar with MWLL at all, maybe a little introduction is in order. MWLL stands for Mechwarrior: Living Legends. It is completely free mod for Crysis wars, where you can pilot a mech, tank, hovercraft, aerospace and VTOL - or you can get into battle armor and take on all of these on foot. The thing is that in MWLL you can't customize you mech/tank, there are predefined versions that you must choose from. Some of them have a few tons spare for ammo, some don't - when you run out, you either fight with what you have, or go to base for reload.

I think the IS Pulse Lasers were available prior to clans, via one of the memory cores, but I don't really know for sure. Just seems that was a "Star League" thing more so than a "Clan" thing.

was produced by the terran hedgemony in 2609 (before IS) the clans ran off with them all (I guess) and so the IS only gets them back during the invasion, and then produces their own versions.

According to Sarnanet, based on the source books and available literature, the IS regained pulse laser tech in 3037.

http://www.sarna.net...rge_Pulse_Laser

The tech more or less came from the Helm Memory Core, http://www.sarna.net...elm_Memory_Core from 3028.

These weapon systems were in wide deployment and use by 3049, the difference being they do not have the range of the Clantech weapons, and tend to weigh more.

ah, looked it up, as cool as all that sounds I have a sneaky suspicion that things would be a tad bit unbalanced just in general, an elemental alone in a fully stocked battlefield? Would be a lot like a single ant trying to take down a tank DURING WW2 (unless they included rules for mech/vehicle takover, which would just be ludicrous) not to knock the game, I think it sounds fantastic I just question whether a fan based game is the best place to view the capabilities of any specific piece of equipment.
That being said, you will not be limited to stock mech builds in this game, so you shouldn't have to worry about that aspect.

Each weapon has it's place, if you find a weapon ineffective, you're probably doing it wrong. Right tool for the job and all.

The main thing you have to realize about MWill, is that it was a unpaid mod. These crazy guys cooked it up all on their own, did the art and programming all on their own, and other then getting great game design experience got nothing but a game to play. Takes brass to do a project like that.

Of course, since it was an amateur project, it did have flaws and balance issues. However for what amount to a player designed and manufactured game, it did amazingly well.

yeah I think that's amazing, like I said I'm not knocking the game it sounds like an epic project just... probably not relevant to the current one in terms of weapon mechanics and the like, as you said, it was an amateur project and while I'm sure they tried to keep it as close to the game as they could I've no idea what their resources were.

That sums it up very well. Also the development still continues. And I must say it is very interesting to have player driven tanks/hovers and air units in play, makes for much more realistic environment. Battle armor is played mostly by the insane :D , if they are not lucky they get killed quickly - on the other hand 2 cooperating BAs can significantly damage or even take down assault mech... I hope that sometime in the future MWO will also introduce a kind of combined arms upgrade...

I remember the first time I got swarmed by Elementals in a game at a con.

DO. NOT. UNDERESTIMATE. ELEMENTALS.

Just sayin' :D

I don't underestimate elementals, I'm just realistic about the chances of ONE elemental, if they're by themselves.

Don't forget about the Ultra AC5 with half the reload time.

So will you be shouting at that Jager mech on a hill top raining lead into your face, that his ACs are useless?

I think the developers have addressed this with rate of fire. In MWLL, AC/2s and 5s fire very quickly, heating up the gun instead of the mech, spitting out enourmous amounts of death at long range for short bursts. They do very adequate damage for their weight, and are a ton of fun to use...and not a ton of fun to get hit with. Their only real limitation then is their ammo, which they chew up quickly, and require reloading.

So basically, you can absolutely thrash one or two big mechs, or maybe a few light mechs before you are out of ammo.

I, too, have played CBT for over 20 years, and never considered the light ACs useful, but in this game, you may find them to be your favorite weapon before you know it.

actually, in MWLL, BA do amazingly well. It helps that they are rendered far too small and are almost impossible to hit, move way faster than they should, and carry TWO powerful anti-mech weapons that do severe damage to even assault mechs, AND they have unlimited Streak SRM-2s. It doesnt take much practice to take down a light or medium mech, and the better players learn how to hide in the environment and wreak havoc on entire heavy and assault lances, all by themselves. I think that I wont mind seeing BA in MWO someday, but only if they render them a little larger (since they carry as much firepower as a light mech), and/or limit them to one full size anti-mech weapon and one single shot Streak-2. Then they would be more like CBT.

which of course further supports my comment that they're not canon and probably not as accurate of an assessment of the AC's viablity ^.^ Elementals can be deadly in MW... as a squad, individually they might dent a big mech's armor but chances are pretty good they'll get cooked pretty quick (or stomped, or bombarded, or shredded, or blasted) A squad could work as a team and keep a bigger mech off balance and unable to return fire easily, and of course there was the most devestating type of elemental crew that would penetrate the cockpit, kill the pilot and take over the hardware ^.^ (sounds to me like they just tried to make them viable and ended up making them super powered :D)

IMO you can't expect everything to be perfectly balanced. It is simply unnatural in every sense of the word.

Some things have to be better than others in more than an equal share of scenarios

This however does not mean they are completely useless as you say.
They can possibly be used as support brawling weapons for lighter mechs that cannot carry the heavier variants, or maybe to harass/ Distract, a heavier mech
Distraction/knockback is a very powerfully tool. You are thinking only in terms of Dps which is wrong.

ESPECIALLY in a team based game.Even if they do little to no damage Imagine how annoying it would be to be peppered by ac5s by only 2 Light mechanical from any given direction when you yourself probably have a heavy/assault to deal with. Even something totally harmless like a a bunch of flies can totally make a human go haywire and stop them dead performing any task they were doing.

I'll just say one thing about AC2 and why i liked having BJs with them in the lance: TAC at ridiculous ranges. That's, basically, all.
