November 2011 - MechWarrior Online Mech Design Contest!

I thought it'd be fun to hold a 'Mech designing contest for MWO. While you're here watching 'Mechs get built, why not build one of your own? Compete in all weight classes or just one! Submit as many designs as you like! Feel free to play with the creation software, Solaris Skunk Werks, that makes everything as easy as clicking a few buttons.

The rules are pretty simple: Everything but the kitchen sink (and clan tech) up to 3049 is allowed. Submitting is as easy as copy-pasting the text version of the 'Mech's sheet, but you can go way more elaborate in pitching your design. You'll be judged on a variety of criteria (i.e. cheapest, highest average damage per round, etc.), so be creative!

...Here's an old one from a design contest over at the official site for a fan TRO. Its in the from the standard HeavyMetalPro design program.

BattleMech Technical Readout

Type/Model: Liberator LIB-3A

Config: Biped BattleMech
Rules: Level 2, Standard design

Mass: 40 tons
Chassis: Standard
Power Plant: 200 Nissan XL Fusion

2 Blue Steel LRM 5
1 Marklin Mini SRM 2
Manufacturer: Krauss-Liemann Incorporated
Location: Wotan
Communications System: Vex/Holden Tricomm Cipher Plus
Targeting & Tracking System: Dillon QuadTrac Plus

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
Originally a prototype design to help defend the Republic from a vengeful
SLDF, the LEO-0 Leo project was cancelled in favor of existing designs when it
became apparent Kerensky would not allow time for a military buildup to
protect the Republic. SLDF Quartermasters chose to modify the design to
operate as a substitute for several designs within the SLDF, renaming it the
LIB-R0 Liberator.
Too specialized for the needs of the SLDF, the Leo was redesigned with Star
League technology and assistance from Republic engineers and technicians. The
new Liberator replaced the design's original 280-rated fusion engine and
single heat sinks with a new 200 XL and double heat sinks, reducing the
Liberator's speed to 56.4 Kph. Barely acceptable to SLDF MechWarriors, the
engine was the sole Star League component, as captured Republic equipment was
used in the remainder of the design.

==Capabilities:==
Concerned with logistics requirements and mission duration, Quartermasters
chose to limit ballistic and missile weapons, centering the Liberator around a
Stoltz Harbinger 2 PPC with Firefly Type II twin medium lasers as back-ups.
Aware the unit needed a stand-off weapon for occasions when direct fire was
impossible or inadvisable, MechWarriors consulted on the issue suggested the
use of paired LRM-5's, preventing a single knock-out blow from destroying the
weapon. Similarly, a single Marklin Mini SRM-2 was provided to allow the use
of Inferno rounds to quickly cripple 'Mechs and armored vehicles too strong
for the Liberator to defeat quickly.
Although anti-infantry capability was needed and the single ton of LRM and SRM
ammo was seen as an acceptable risk by MechWarriors, the ammunition
requirements of multiple machine guns was not. Providing a solution to the
standoff, Republic engineers provided paired Firefly Type I small lasers to
each arm, finishing the design process.

==Battle History:==
Notorious for poor battlefield performance, the Liberator commonly found
itself unable to apply its heavy weapons load, resulting in a Medium design
with the firepower of a Light 'Mech, too slow to keep up with the lighter
'Mechs it was designed to replace. Unable to replace most designs within the
SLSF on a one-to-one basis, the design was eventually fielded in lances by
Company commanders, despite assurances the design was suitable for deployment
under most circumstances by the Quartermaster corps.
Despite their heavy weapons loads, Lances of the design ran into problems of a
different sort as maintenance issues resulted in larger than anticipated
numbers of the Liberator sidelined to keep the remainder of their lances
operational. On New Earth, rushed field maintenance after a previous day of
heavy action left several lances of the design with only random operational
weapons, allowing the 47th Republican Guards to break the ranks of the
encircling SLDF and hold out for 2 weeks before being successfully hunted down
by lighter SLDF lances.
On occasion, however, the 'Rim Marauder' lived up to its designer's claims and
was extremely successful. A lance of Liberators managed a successful
rear-area raid as they decimated the Light 'Mechs sent to contain them and
outran the Heavy garrison 'Mechs sent to eliminate them, returning to a hero's
welcome from the Quartermaster Corps, only to be sidelined for the rest of the
battle until replacement parts became available (from salvaged Liberators) as concealed battle damage complicated repairs.
Considered a mediocre design by pilots, the Liberator found few advocates outside
the Quartermaster Corps. Despite the heavy weapons load, MechWarriors
preferred the specialized designs common in the SLDF to the Liberator, while
technicians found the Republic components prone to failure and requiring more
frequent and comprehensive work to ensure their operation.
Counter-intelligence operations later identified the head of the Republic
engineering team as a mole, suspected of bribing key clerks in the
Quartermaster Corp to misdirect complaints concerning the design. Conducting
an internal review of the Liberator, tests confirmed the design was unable to
meet most of the original specifications and required higher logistical
support to maintain the poorly designed Republic equipment. Considered a
failure, General Kerensky cancelled production of the Liberator in favor of
proven Star League designs before the final battle of Terra.

==Variants:==
Unable to secure the 200XL engine required by the Liberator, techs commonly
substituted the standard 160-rated engine, sacrificing a half-ton of armor and
adding two heat sinks, or the 240XL by sacrificing the small lasers and a
half-ton of armor. Unacceptable even to SLDF quartermasters, variants were frequently scrapped rather than repaired. Experiments with specialized weapons loads resulted in
a LRM variant, dubbed the LIB-R1, although Republic targeting systems were
commonly unable to function with the advanced Artemis IV system, resulting in
an end to experimentation.

==Notable 'Mechs & MechWarriors:==
Captain Edwina Bolton and the Pushme-pullyu

The sole survivor of its lance to be salvaged, the Pushme-pullyu was rebuilt
from the internal structure out, and so was unhindered by most of the problems
plaguing the design. Eventually coming to the attention of her superiors,
Edwina was promoted to her Company's Command Lance and given a more suitable
'Mech. Her Liberator went to the scrap yard, while Edwina, used to the
Liberator's heavier armor and wide range of weapons, was killed in her new
Sentinel on her first mission.

MechWarrior Jared Kursk

Assigned to the Liberator's second test, Jared delivered a scathing rebuttal
to supporters of the design within the Quartermaster corps, insisting the
design was flawed and the equipment unacceptable in terms of reliability.
Eventually reaching General Kerensky himself, his report of the Liberator's
flaws and shortcomings resulted in the end of Liberator production.

No fluff for it, and it took me a grand total of five minutes in SSW to build, but I like it. It's like a mini-Hollander, almost. But faster and better armored.

Sorry about the last mech, guys. I forgot to label and describe it, but here's my new mech. I haven't named it yet, but it has lasers on its feet for when it flies over enemies with its jump jets.

My latest mech is still being perfected, but essentially it's a mobile artillery platform for Arrow IV missiles. It only has one small laser for anti-personnel, but the design only invests so much weight in that task. The 90 ton mech is only designed to provide long range anti-mech support. While a couple Arrow IV launchers might not seem like a lot of weight, the mech has extremely agile legs which allow it to get into position for fire support missions, as well as maneuver away from close combat.

It can be seen here firing its weapons and flushing coolant.

I know it might not sound good to you, but I just looked up the BV for the Orion and it was only given a value of 1429.
My mech would be a med-long range support mech, with 3 medium lazers in case anything got too close. Its decent ground speed plus no jumpjets would mean that positioning would be more important. I also know that it might generate a lot of heat when you add those med-lazers, but assuming you don't have to use them, it makes a good fire support mech.

So, whatcha think?

Drop the ams, upgrade the large laser to a PPC to even out your long range weapons a little.

Edit: Also, since you've elected advanced tech, why not go to double heat sinks?

For CBT I created a 100 ton Highlander IIC and this is a model I made of it.

Gauss Rifle 2 tons of ammo
Streak LRM 20 2 tons of ammo
2x Streak SRM 6 1 ton ammo
3 Medium Pulse Lasers
and of course, jump jets.
Has higher armor then normal Highlander IIC. Cant seem to find my sheet so cant give any greater details.\

OK I just realized that this mech is full of era incorrect gear, oops.

Like I said, double heat sinks.

Also, bracket fire. You usually won't be firing the PPC + LRM-10 + AC/5 and the Medium lasers at the same time

What was advanced? The ferro-fib? I thought that was normal for 3050's?

When I chose the Era for it in the summary, I thought it would limit the choices of equipment.

Anything not available during the 3025 period is considered advanced. AMS, ferro-fibrous, endosteel, double heat sinks, ER Lasers, etc are all beyond the standard.

In SSW, click "Succession Wars" for tech level, type 3049 in the box right below it, and then click "Restrict by availability."

Use anything under those criteria.
