If you want a 'real war experience,' which would mostly consist of sitting around for hours of boardom interrupted by brief moments of terror when a sniper or remote artillary position you didn't know was their cleans you off the map with no chance to reply, I suggest you seek elsewhere. Any game that has mecha running around a battlefield firing way more missiles then it could possibly actually hold (See the trope Macross Missile Massacre) and spewing lasers out their backsides has pretty much dispensed with any claims to realism anyway. The point isn't to be realistic, it's to run around in big tanks on legs and spam the enemy robots with pretty beam weapons.
It's a game, and ultimately balance matters. FF is mostly a hindrance to pickup teams, and gives further advantage to premades. That is its practical effect on the game. Arguments about how realistic combat would occur between 50 foot tall metal giants flinging photons at each other is so much smoke and wind.
