Didn't they say that community warfare would *only* have 1st person and that regular playlists and etc. would have a choice between 1st and 3rd?

Why and How?
It seems new players have problem with torso twist, legs and movement and the coordination required to pilot the mech, according to Russ.
So they want to help, by showing via the 3rd person view.

They also plan to add a "way" to define wich type of play the match will have: 1st person, 3rd person or both.
This can be done via your House/Merc/Clan settings on community warfare.
So you will be able to choose only to play against other 1st person players, or 3rd, or allow any of the two.

Perhaps I need to listen to the podcast myself, but considering its in the CW settings, that implies 1 of 2 things

1. That 3rd person is going to be a global option for almost every mode AND present in the meta game.

2. That CW seems to be more along the lines as CoD style playlists...

Things more important then a 3rd person view.
1.More maps
2.More mechs
3.ammo options for weapons that should have them
4.more game mode types.
5.Crash to desktop fix;s
6.Crash to mech lab fix's
7.Mechs not staying ready on home page.
8.direct x 11 update.
9.netcoad fix's
10.light lag armor fix.
11.match maker
12.allow full teams again
13.12 vs 12 match's
14.Fix memory leak
15.add tutorial mode for new players

There are so many more things. Now the overbearing fact is all the things listed above would be improvements while adding 3rd person view will cripple the game mechanics and get loyal players to leave. The founders stuff was sold as this was a first person only game it was stated several times. Changing it to a 3rd person game makes it a completely different game and not what founders were supporting being made.

If the argument is that it will provide tactical advantage... I don't find that to be sound logic either.

Seeing around corners and over hills provides a great tactical advantage, this was very evident in Mechwarrior 4 (did you play that game competitively?)

You'd be surprised. They're not as common now but there were threads from people in an uproar over not having 3rd person since they couldn't understand movement in any other way. There are also others who get severe motion sickness from anything in first person especially with the bobbing and shaking in this game.

While I can sympathize with the latter, a 3rd person view that's immune to that will get even more in the way of advantages...

I think 3rd person view would be ok for spectator mode. It would make for some cool screen shots. But as far as for an actual player I think it needs to stay in 1st person view in order to keep that immersive feeling of being in the cockpit that is a core part of mechwarrior.

Don't forget from behind, too (less relevant in MW4, much moreso here).

*sigh* Would a simple "worst idea ever" suffice, or does PGI really need us to elaborate on the reasons despite the fact that those reasons have been known for at least a decade?

My feed back is Please don't do it.

If you do add it please make it a very close centered Locked view to the back, that only rotates with the mech. In this view, you would not be allow you to see anything that you could not see from the cockpit view. ie around corners or over hills.

Over all I really think its a bad idea to add it.

Dear Russ (or any dev who knows):

How EXACTLY are you going to implement 3rd person perspective in MWO combat?

Right now, one of the greatest fears I have seen numerous posters express is that 3rd person perspective will give an unfair and "unrealistic" advantage because they assume a mech will be able to completely conceal themselves behind terrain, but still be able to spot enemy mechs using the 3rd person camera to peek around the corner of a building or over a hill.

Are you going to implement 3rd person in a similar manner to the way World of Tanks does it? That is to say: If you can't see a target from inside of your tank (1st person) then you can't see that target outside your tank either (3rd person) - unless a team mate is spotting them for you.

Clarifying this would maybe do a great deal to put a lot of customer's minds at ease.

They'll learn as much as noobs playing the boosted mode in DotA.

All it will give them is bad habits and they'll suck even more.

I thought they said they specifically didn't want to do it because it took away from the simulation feel...

The idea sucks and only shows PGI ever weak spined and buckling to pressure [REDACTED].

BTW dont ask for my feedback if you dont want my honest feedback.

I've listened to Russ's comments on 3rd person camera. When it eventually comes to battles that matter (community warfare, planet control, etc.), 3rd person will HAVE to be disabled. On general battle matches, it should be an option in matchmaking, and if they ever introduce a practice mode, they can leave that decision to individual players.

Please don´t do this. 3rd person will destroy the game by adding the ability to watch arround corners and other f**king stuff like this.

I mean really this is a Mech SIMULATION ever heard about it?!?
And never break a promise again!

on the plus side, if we go 3rd person, they can implement a different /dance emote for each type of mech

still don't like it

I just threw up a little bit in my mouth.

Why don't they take advice from people that actually play video games?

No, please don't. Give new players a training mode that is separate from the main game instead so they can learn to play without getting killed.

It takes away from the flavor and character of the game. It provides an anti-immersive ability to see around corners, hills, and various other obstacles removing a lot of the terrain based tactics you've been working on incorporating in the game. And most importantly, it ostracizes your hard-core fanbase in a cynical grab for a wider audience who would still be turned off by the legitimate issues the game has with its new-user experience.
