I mean really this is a Mech SIMULATION ever heard about it?!? And never break a promise again!

Simulation Lite, maybe. It has a long ways to go before I'd consider it anything more than an FPS with emphasis on hit locations.

It's stuff like this that keeps me away from this game now. Every week some new dumb decision by PGI. I really think they want this game to fail.

How about they just make it so when in 3rd person view you can't fire weapons. Give the pilot a grainy "chase cam" view and the ability to steer, jump, etc, but that's all.

were suppose to be playing from the viewpoint of the pilot inside the mech. whats 3rd person...an out of body experience? lol

i could maybe see a head mounted external camera module that when you switched to it, you could see outside your mech, but you lose targeting reticules/data in camera mode. but i dont see any free floating 3rd person camera in this game.

I'm afraid that if a 3rd person view is implemented, you will lose a big chunk of your player base. Your original design idea was to create a mech 'sim', not some common or garden FPS shooter (which is half the games out there at the moment).

People need to rise to the level the game is set at, not scream and shout until it is brought down to their own level.

Do not be swayed by the vocal minority, there have been several polls that indicate that the majority of people say no, to a 3rd person view.

There is your answer.

Regards.

I've listened to Russ's comments on 3rd person camera. When it eventually comes to battles that matter (community warfare, planet control, etc.), 3rd person will HAVE to be disabled. On general battle matches, it should be an option in matchmaking, and if they ever introduce a practice mode, they can leave that decision to individual players.

Comforting, however it will be harder to enforce that when 3rd person is already coded into the game in long run...

The problem is peeking over terrain elements, people can simply switch views in order to fire and still take advantage of the 3rd persona cam.

There is a lot to be said about overly simplifying the game and trying to reach the wrong kind of audience - and pleasing nobody in the end, as people like me will leave for no other reason than to spite you, and casuals are even more fickle and their interest more fleeting.

But I will leave saying these things to others. One actual gameplay concern I have, is that sneaking up on mechs will no longer be possible. I play mostly lights at the moment. It is common for me to sneak up on a stationary Atlas and completely melt his back if he's distracted from his paperdoll by the action in front of him and firing LRMs. Or sneak up on a Catapult and blow away a pod with two alphas.
But when they see their back, even the not-so-bright will notice the green beams. This is bad for mechs that rely on speed and cunning, and removes a gameplay aspect that I greatly enjoy. It also applies to combat with an aware opponent - this kind of omnidirectional situational awareness does not fit the game. It should stay 1st person only.

If you must add 3rd person view, then make sure that you follow up on your promise of systems to strictly segregate players using the two different views into different matches. Given your track record, I have little hope.

Look at what happened to SWG when they dumbed the game down for mouth breathers.

This still has too many potential advantages for a scout to exploit, especially if they are only spotting for their team and using the external cam to better avoid enemy mechs while running around.

Garth! I can see you're reading it, please tell us official word on what is going on with that 3rd person view.

Don't forget from behind, too (less relevant in MW4, much moreso here).

Absolutely. I use SRMs/SLs all the time and I frequently rely on sneak attacks. This would pretty much ruin that.

Like many have said in the other thread. You are splitting the community in two, again. This is a mech simulator, not a mech 3rd person shooter.

the playerbase in this game is already tiny and you plan to split it into 3 groups????

if players dont like the first person because it is too hard, they will prolly quit this game for COD anyway. the type that are not willing to learn a new style def are not happy about not being able to insta kill people on first sight.

I believe that adding a 3rd person view would be a complete disaster and totally compromise the game.

Is it really that hard to figure out the torso rotates independently from the legs?
You know, just like a tank...

1st person servers for those who want to play 1st person

3rd person servers for those who want to play 3rd person (and take nice screenshots)

Sounds fair enough to me.

That could work. I'd prefer real fixes and improvements over this crutch.

-edit-
As has been mentioned, it could be exploited for scouting.

Let's try and push this topic to adress the issue of new players finding it hard,

So, there is the tutorial idea, which I personaly feel would be the best way to do it, drill it into them, let them get the feel and flow of it all.

The 3rd person idea seems, at least here, to have little support. It seems to have as many if not more downsides than positives.

I struggle to think of a downside for a tutorial mode however. (unless time spent working on it counts? even then I still think it's a net win)

Can anyone think of any other ways to help new players who are finding it hard?
