That the biggest problem new players had was figureing out the relationship between their torso and their legs.
If that is the case, restrict 3rd person view to trial mechs.
This way new players can have an additional view to help them along, while keeping 3rd person from becoming a requirement in normal play and preventing a splitting of the player base.
3rd person should also be HUDless, maybe with the radar view so they can see the relation between the minimap indicators and their legs.
This will further confuse them on the issue. Jump in mech, play 3rd person, make some money, buy mech, get shoved into 1st person. Is that really the solution? It'd be like shoving them into a completely different game.
If this is truly to help new players then put in a freaking tutorial and training ground into the game. There doesn't need to be any complex AI or bots in this. Toss some select able and non moving targets at various ranges that the user can shoot at and give them some form of instructions on how to torso twist, weapon group etc.

That said, the idea that matches can be limited to 1st, and 3rd person view is a great idea at least so the real pilots can play the game. That said How will you stop the cheating that occurred back in m4 days. IE in 3rd person view one could see over a hill. So people would lign up target , jump up and nail target and get basically no returning fire. I would consider this a cheat to say the least. How in 3rd person view would you prevent this kind of action. Ie show train but not the mechs until the mech would be visible to the cockpit ??
Also I have to admit 3rd person view is nice to see the mech itself, so maybe allow 3rd person view to see your mech BUT you are not able to pilot mech or see other mechs when in 3rd person view.
Again keep 3rd person view VERY low on the list of items to get done. I would much rather have the meta game implemented before 3rd person view hits the table. IE make it at best a nice to have in the far future.

There is not a group of players who are JUST waiting for 3rd person.
Players weened on 3rd person will not graduate comfortably to real MWO.
Training level is needed.
If you want this game to to get more players, you need the players to be screaming from the rooftops how fantastic it is, engaging the players.
This is partially the players fault... be nice and helpful to noobs... PLEASE! Verbally attacking "pubbies" for being "pubbies" makes it so that PGI has to try to coddle them, because you won't!
My 8 year old was playing the other day, posted on a building firing...and I said, Hey your torso is turned, look here... and pointed to the radar. What about a bouncing paper clip. "You're running into a wall. Would you like help with that?"
I hear Russ telling us how whiny we are. So what it looks like is the loud Grognards are drowning out the kids who need 3rd person, and then it will be ok. Lets take this lesson to be better posters and communicators with PGI.

When was the last time you were driving your car and you didn't use your mirrors because you could see everthing from 3rd person view?
Next thing you know the four pillars of gameplay - Mech, Information, Role and Community Warfare will be bent and twisted by the slobbering CoD children. Why have pillars that uphold your game when as soon as someone complains you tear the whole structure down (more than likely NOT founders or people who know that the game is a Mech simulator).
If this trend continues, all we will end up with will be a game where Steiner scout lances engage eachother in their Atlases until the timer runs out.

Or you could simply make it extremely difficult to aim, or even just 'fix' the mech's aim when someone switches to 3rd person view...

That's how it is though. I have no problem with the concept. You have no problem with the concept. Getting my wife (avid MMO player) into it though? Getting my friends who mostly play games like Metal Gear Solid or Resident Evil? Those people could benefit from this.
They could also benefit from a real tutorial telling them how this game works, rather than taking the (sadly often accurate) approach "It's just another game, it'll play and be controlled like all the others."

Because the guy who said "no third person" then flip-flopped to "Third person will be snuck in under the bogus guise of aiding people who can't look in one direction while walking in another" has already made the decision?
Or how about because there's already one out there showing 90% against the idea that's already been decided on? http://mwomercs.com/...son-its-coming/

It really isn't, but feel free to take exception to my comment anyway.
This topic is not new and the overwhelming response to the possibility of 3rd person view has been negative in both Beta and in the poll posted and linked to.

It was amazing, you gotta hear this. I watched this girl walking down the hallway, she twisted her torso and head so she could look behind her. It was incredible, she kept walking in the same direction and didnt slam into a wall!!
She must have superpower or be really good at using the human body or something, totally elite to understand that concept!

Seriously. Read what you just said out loud to someone else. Doesn't your tone and dismissive language make you feel just a little uncomfortable? It certainly made me cringe. Just because it's straightforward and easy to understand for you does not make it easy for someone else. Put yourself in someone else's shoes for a minute and you'll appreciate a very different view of the world.
I stand by every single word I said in that post, what makes me uncomfortable is the apparent lack of effort and problem solving on your and your friends part. This game is not that complicated, yes it does take thought, which I like. If you want a thoughtless point and shoot game, this is not for you, there are plenty of point and shoot games out there if that is really what you want.
