World of Tanks is not a simulator, it was not billed as a simulator, it never collected revenue from Founders as a simulator.

PGI didnt get revenue from me for being a simulation. I disagree with this direction of the game but if they can make it work I would continue to play(or if it is only in training). But I am holding off spending any additional money on this game until I can test the changes myself.

It would be nice if we could get a response from the devs on whether this is actually going through or not, despite the massive amount of protesters. A simple, "we are reconsidering 3rd person" would be nice.

I see Garth is online...

And people in favor of 3rd person, please don't ask for specific reasons for our point against it, when every one of them is already in the thread.

It is not only the "slight" advantage of being able to look over a hill, around a building, without actually looking. It is also being able to see exactly what has just hit your rear armor. It also negates cockpit view disadvantages that are inherent to a certain machines design and should be part of the simulation: Atlas has a narrow field of view due to a small cockpit window. It's harder to hit that way, so it's a tradeoff.

Add another information screen or multi-function display to the cockpit. In the display show the mech from some 3rd person angle, thus giving the pilot feedback about the mech's orientation but not live camera or targeting feedback.

More details:

This could be a simple wire frame or a fully rendered visual of the mech.

If a wire frame it could be a stardarized mech icon rather than having to make yet another drawing of every mech.
...

I favor an overhead wireframe with an arrow for movement facing and a field-of-view arc showing tosrso facing next to the minimap. Instead of cluttering up the available space let the warning voice report 'Obstacle encountered'.

I will agree that it would be neat to be able to get a nice third person view of your mech, especially once you've tweaked it and once paint jobs come into play. That static view in your mechlab just doesn't cut it.

That being said, it has no place in actual combat. It doesn't belong in death cams or spectator mode either - that's just a way for a dead lancemate to give you a better field of vision.

Now I know the earliest MW games were either single player, or focused on S/P while multi was in infancy with TCIP.

That said, isn't a huge part of single player games MW2:Mercs and up simply good training for piloting leading into the multiplayer?

I know we live in a world where everyone expects no S/P and to just hop on for the kill, but training grounds with 3rd and no where else is amenable to me.

3rd person in multiplayer sounds like getting shafted; we might as well just fight on consistently flat plains.

DO NOT DO IT. If there's one thing that goes completely against the feel of MechWarrior It's third person view. We want this to be a piloting simulator not a arcade style game. I was very very happy that PGI rejected this idea in the past, I don't understand why they would consider putting it in to the game.

Funny, thread is almost a 100 pages long, and we don't even get "we are talking about it" from him... That's reassuring lol

It would be more helpful for new players to have a training map. Something where they could get the hang of things without being in a match.
3rd person veiw is just a waste of time and might drive away some players.

i think that i dont need to tell anyone that this is considered a bad idea, by the most forum users.

However, there are ideas on how to solve the issue for new players.

1. The 3d model like in Mechwarrior 3 (as Josef Nader posted on page 3)

2. a "Training mode" Normal PUG games with 3rd person Allowed (with no XP and reduced Cbill reward). Only Players who selected Training mode will be dropped here.

3. a Toturial with a Pilotingskill Test (like a Slalom course or something similar). after Completing it there will be a, one time, Cbill reward.

So please consider this more than just adding a 3rd person View as an normal option in the Game.

Do not destroy what has been a promising Mech combat simulator because a part of the player base cannot excel at the game. Mechwarrior is about enjoying the experience of sitting in the pilot seat of a Battlemech, not floating behind it like a ghost.

I will not support a game that goes back on advertising itself as a Battlemech simulator only to perform a blatant cash grab at the lowest common denominator.

There are already plenty here but I just wanted to add yet another voice that is 100% against adding 3rd person view to the game. There has to be a better way to show new players what is going on with their torso twist and get them used to it.

Ok. For me this would not make the game anymore a mechwarrior title in any sense and I would like to have a refund of my money, if it would come true.

Thank you.

edit: if you want it easier for newbies, how about fixing the matchmaking already?

Please do not implement a 3rd person view.

A great tactic/strategy in this game is to flank or circle behind an enemy and if we have a 3rd person view (person can actually see where the fire is coming from) then that totally kills that very important aspect of the game.

If I am going to play this game I want to feel like there is skill and strategy involved. If it gets too watered down I may have to consider alternatives.

addendum:

actually now that i think about it, even the very thought that you are suggesting this tells me there is something going horribly wrong, and does make lose most of the hope I had for this particular game to prevail.. ;)

No. Just No. Mechwarrior should be played from the perspective of the pilot. That being said I DO want the capability to record a match and then watch it in 3rd person! :)

3rd person view in combat: NO
Tutorial / training games: YES (maybe a special training map where 3rd person view is enabled)
3D render of mech in hud: YES (should be optional)
Options and key bindings for locking/auto-centering legs/arms/torso: YES (add everything and let people use what they prefer)
