I was told this when I complained that repair bills are too high for a casual player, and I just wanted to repeat the sage advice for those who think 3rd person view will ruin the game, because it's highly constructive:
Stop whining.
Stop whining.

BigMooingCow, we are not whining, we are reacting to a very caustic statement by PGI that is in essence doing a few things, namely:
1. Making them out to be Liars.
2. Proving they will pander to the lowest common denominator.
3. Ignore 90%+ of the hard core player base who, are in fact very vocal in NOT wanting this purported feature.
4. They are willing to break a KEY DESIGN PILLAR that THEY sold us on prior to getting our money before the Founders Sale.
I can go on, but, I trust this shows you why we are reacting the way we are.

EXCEPT that nobody, ever, has stopped playing because of these supposed "game breaker, player losing" ideas....
Russ even said so on the podcast. (he can see your playing statistics / forum posts)
and Devs from a million other MMOs have said the exact same thing.
so when they do introduce third person / if they do introduce third person... i doubt their active user base will even bat an eyelash.
so yes everyone is blowing this way out of proportion.
its more about the point that 90% of the community said no, and we are being ignored. A game designer listens to his community and builds the game for them. Not for people at E3 that played the game for 30 minutes - 1 hour

While I agree that there might be something a "device" to "ease" the complete newb recruit into something as simple (and yet radically different than what most of the standard FPS crowd are used to) as spatial orientation and coordination. The recruit mechwarrior DOES literally have to learn to walk all over again.
BUT I would also say that that "device" should be targeted SOLELY at getting them to the point where they can walk without constant reference to, and the crutch of, (to say nothing of the exploit potential) a 3rd person view, and NOT be able to be used for much else.
I'm one of those in agreement that if a 3rd person view of any kind is implemented, it should be an optional HUD window that shows nothing BUT your mech from a viewpoint above and behind. That is, it's a repeater of your model. You torso twist left, the legs wind up pointed to the right of the cockpit. Perhaps with an arrow indicating forward movement. And have it take up enough screen real estate that the moment you can control your mech without it, you want to control your mech without it.

That's the kind of stuff I said when I complained about mech repair costs. I tried to lay out my arguments, and tried to not be ad hominem. You know what the response was?
Stop whining.
Silly, isn't it? The community loves to beat on each other.
FWIW, I have no problem with 3rd person view so long as it doesn't grant the player an advantage over 1st person.
Car racing games have this same issue. 3rd person gives you a better view of the cars around you (sometimes a big advantage), but 1st person view is generally easier to hit your apexes. In a game going for realism, 1st person view is the design intention. One of the sims I play even has an option to force people into 1st person view. (There are also options to force the clutch and force ABS off.) I don't play with people who set the game that way. In my opinion, people should be allowed to have fun the way they want to, so long as it doesn't give them a big advantage over others. If we get an extra 100K players in my sim by allowing 3rd person, AWESOME. They'll drive their way, I'll drive mine.
Same deal with MWO. People might join in because of the eye candy. Great! Eventually they'll realize that (assuming the cockpit isn't inferior) 1st person view makes aiming easier due to parallax, and they'll switch for better aim. But would you rather have, say, 200K people who LOVE 1st person or 300K people, of whom maybe 50K stay with 3rd person?
More players = more money for PGI = better game for all of us.
Or, I could say what everybody always said to me: Stop Whining.

no way to implement 3rd person that does not fundamentally alter the game. it may draw in some at first, but long run, angering those who are wholly and categorically opposed to it, only damages the bottom line in the long run, making this game, which, even tho it is STILL in BETA mode, is fragile as is, enough punches down the road and it dies, maybe by this time next year if they keep treating it like this.
