Wait, what?? Setting your forums aflame with theoretical mind games? Why the hell even mention it?? As far as I can recall the thing with NO 3rd Person was set in stone and so for good reason!

it is sad that devs are responding to people who don't pay for the game, aren't committed to the game or the community and will be off to their next console game within 2-3 months of playing this and ruining it for the folks who plan on staying and playing with their teams and or houses that they have been part of for decades.
Think about this devs: there is a majority of "regular" players who are going to support and keep this game alive for years. We have waited for this for over ten years, but if it is made so hostile to teams, units, houses you will drive away the very fan base that you wanted to tap into at the outset of this endeavor.

An over-the-shoulder view, which sounds like what we're talking about, wouldn't just offer a visual advantage over a cockpit view; it might also reduce this simulation to an arcade shooter.
Ah, Virtual World. Nothing like sliding that plywood hatch over yourself to get things going.

Exactly, putting fairness aside for a moment, being bolted into your walking walking nuke reactor adds to the experience for me. Knowing that you can flick to 3rd person would take something away. In fact I'd rather we stayed with 1st person view when we get destroyed, just have the view fade or go red.

It was never set in stone.

MechWarrior Online is being designed to put you the player in the seat of the pilot. It is 100% first person view only. Being the pilot is one of our key design pillars and 3rd person breaks that pillar on multiple levels as seen in many of the other 3rd Person discussions.
We will investigate 3rd person in the far off distance for special game settings, but this is very far off in the distance.
While we appreciate those who enjoy 3rd person, MWO will be 1st person out of the gate and in the near future.

Funny how that works, eh?

I am sure there are dozens of people on this thread that would happily fight you one-on-one.
I would be one of them.
I, like everyone I play with in my Merc corp, would prefer that we never fought pugs, and I would think that any hardcore MWO player that joined a guild, corp, group, gang, outfit or whatever would feel the same way. Before the 4 man mess that made it very difficult to play as an organized group, we actually had rules and regs that made dropping against other per-mades, even if it was only within he corp, a priority over pug stomping.
And really, if you are looking for 3rd person perspective to help you overcome the advantage of organized tactics and teamwork from a group that plays and trains and practices together all the time.....well.....then I have some choice words for you that you can likely figure out for yourself.
We joined for a challenge, we joined to fight against the best teams we can find, we develop training and tactics and doctrine so one day we can be one of the premier outfits in MWO as we are in some other MMO games we play.
Let me ask you something.....
Do you plan on continuing to play this game by yourself once the meta game and community warfare comes out?
Or are you just here as a casual player, dropping in occasionally with random groups?
Are you ever going to play with a group, or do you always plan on going it alone and wondering why organized teams are more successful?
Do you consider yourself a casual or hardcore player?
Is this your first Mechwarrior/battletech game, or have you played other MW games?
Would you rather play a game mode with no ammo, no heat, and a 3rd person view?
Based on the attitude I see in your post, I would be stunned if you answered any of my questions.

Did the people that made the hardcore jet simulators go out of their way to say that they'd never put such a feature in their game?
Was there a history of severely impacted and totally unrealistic combat play in an earlier sequel of this hypothetical jet sim game that most would agree broke the combat mechanics of the game due to the inclusion of 3rd person perspective and a couple of other features?
