Sorry If this has been answered:

Just wondering how the "Online" Part of the game is going to be handled. Will countries have local Piranha servers? Or will it be more like FPS games where servers are put on by local ISP and Rent 'o' server companies.

There will be a persistent meta game, so it stands to reason the meta game portion could run off a single (cluster of) server(s).

As for the way battles are handled, I don't believe there is any indication yet how it will be done. Could be from Piranha's servers, wherever they are located, could be instanced with PVP, could be dedicated servers scattered around the word run by Piranha, could be run by individuals. We'll know more later.

Dude, get out of the naughties and into the current decade. It will work like the majority of online games these days with dedicated host servers provided by the company.

Source? As autogyro indicated, I thought we don't have any statement on that yet. Could be any of the options autogyro mentioned.

If they plan on maintaining a persistent world where player actions can have an effect on which faction or company controls which planet and you can spend real world money to earn in game currency with which to purchase cosmetic mods and perhaps equipment and 'mech slots we can safely assume that PGI will be hosting everything

Op was asking if we would have to rent our own servers to play the game...

I don't think we would need to rent our own servers O.o....I highly doubt it would be a persistent world as well as they would have already mentioned that.I strongly believe it would be WOT style buy, mod, join , kill.

I see you're new here. They HAVE already mentioned that there will be a persistent "Inner Sphere" being fought over by Faction members and Merc units alike. Try reading some of the first Dev Blogs.

I just recently saw an article that said battles would be 12v12. That is what threw me.

Anyway, the reason I ask is because I'm from Australia, so server location is obviously a potential issue. I used to play some MW4 and get pings of 200-500ms so I was wondering if this would be similar.

To my knowledge there is no official release on this however it would be my guess that servers are centralized versus localized. Possibly here in Canada which would make the Canadians truly rule the world!! For realizes!

Guess I'll check back later, probably a bit early on this question  . I appreciate all the quick responses even the jerky ones.

Love that the community seems so strong.

FPS games generally have company hosted serves as well, you know. Like Tribes: Ascend and TF2. Counter-strike: global offensive will have both the official servers and player controlled servers.

If there are non-company servers they will probably be 'outside' the persistent MWO world. Player controlled servers are pretty much necessary for player run tournaments and other forms of player-created events and interaction.
