There are a couple cool things about Windows 8, but they're overshadowed but the horrible stuff. It's like Windows Vista all over again.
I'm happy on Windows 7 64-bit. I have two copies of Windows 7 Ultimate (needed Pro for networking, so only $30 more each over Pro) for my two PCs at home, gaming and work. I wouldn't touch Windows 8. I'll keep 7 until the next version of Windows comes out and then re-evaluate.

Now as scary as that is, the real danger comes in the form of backdoors in the OS ( which windows will always have ) which if found can lead to hackers writing malicious code. This in turn can lead from identify theft all the way to bricking your computer. This is the single biggest turn off to me when considering win8. Besides, win7 works pretty good for a microsoft product.
EDIT : For those of you using XP be advised that starting Jan 1, 2013 microsoft is discontinuing ALL support for windows XP.

Windows NT 3.5, 3.51, 4.0, amd Windows 2000 were all workstation operating systems that were separate from the consumer line of Windows 9x and Me. Every single version of Windows NT and 2k were superb, rock solid. I used Windows 2000 for a couple years until XP came along. At the time I was so happy to see that XP merged the stable NT kernel with the consumer support for games including DirectX.

I agree with this appraisal of operating systems. As for how win 8 will be.....we will just have to crash a few computers to see.

What's annoying about Windows 8 is that if you wanted to toggle back and forth between MetroUI and the AeroUI on the fly, you can't. You have to disable MetroUI in a clunky way to get it back to a regular mouse & keyboard AeroUI. That's sort of pointless for desktop users who would use the mosue & keyboard UI then toggle back to MatroUI when browsing media or doing simple things.

people laughed at me for still using WinME on my computer, when they had all upgraded to Windows XP . .
And i laughed at them, when they all got infected with Win32Blaster and had the 20 seconds to shutdown every 5 minutes or so . .
And i did not get it ^^
