Anyone running a medium in 8v8 for a competitive reason? no just for kicks? Mediums seem useless these days without a weight limit in 8v8. I tell people to run a heavy or get out of my group.

Spot on.

It's lights, Heavies and assaults only.

Suggest game type name for 8 VS 8 : Medium warriors offline. :)

With ECM beeing the way it is, the best mechs seems to be the D-DC, the Gausscat or fast scouts/cappers.

Why bring anything else?

Mostly noticed the same thing although there is still room for Splatapults. You have to spend a lot more time in thermal vision though now that the minimap is mostly useless :)

As far as I can tell a dragon > any "fast" medium and a Raven > Cicada for fast ECM. Hard as hell to justify a Hunchback.

I ran an Atlas for a few matches last night. I died every match. I accidentally dropped in my Centurion and not only did I live but I wracked up a Kill and 2 assists! Its funny too cause I dealt over 800 damage total in 2 matches in the Atlas with zero kills/assists, I did 127 points of damage in the Centurion and I got 1 Kill and 2 assists!

Something is wrong with this picture. :)

As a medium pilot myself (to the point where I currently only have centurions in my garage) I can safely say mediums are not at all common, discounting the guaranteed 1 enemy medium my inclusion forces in the current matchmaker. The playstyle of a medium is a bit difficult to get a good grasp on and thusly most players gravitate towards lighter mechhs which are slightly faster, which makes them fast enough to really skirmish or heavier mechs, which can put out significantly more and sustained firepower. I think that once assaults and heavies become more diverse, the role of the medium will become more pronounced as the withering atlas and dual gauss firepower becomes less common. (well, hopefully). If you strap in an engine upgrades they certainly can fill the role of chasing down/away ECM scouts, which currently is very useful.

In the matches I've run I've been dropping in a Cicada configed as a fast scout...

Team varied somewhat but was usually composed of 1 assault, 3 heavies (two Phracts and a Cat usually), another medium, 2 ravens, and me. Nice and balanced.

What we usually faced was 2 or 3 Ravens/Commandos, 1 or 2 mediums/heavies, and FIVE effing Atlases. That Steiner Scout Lance outmassed my entire team by itself.

Assaults are supposed to be rare on any given battlefield. That's what makes the "Steiner Scout Lance" bit a joke.

I'm gonna go on record as wanting a drop tonnage total matchmaker. Basically when you drop your group is matched against a group with +/- 30% of your tonnage.

The only alternative I think would work is perhaps a C-bill reward bonus based on your relative tonnage... If you're 20% under the enemy's tonnage ( Say your group masses 480 tons, and the opponent's masses 600) you get a 10% bonus for every cbill you earn during that match. 10% under, 5% bonus, etc. Probably cap it at 10% bonus, to keep "Lights only Lances" from abusing it too much.

Basically there are two conditions to be met that, while they won't ensure victory, make it a lot easier. They are:

Bring as much ECM as possible.
Bring as many Atlases as possible.

And since the D-DC can carry ECM, you can do both at the same time.

Even lights seem to be limited since most of the teams I've fought were 6+ Atlases.

Mediums are fine, in fact still the best mechs overall.

Last night I had an 8v8 match in my super-Cent where I had 1002 damage and 4 kills. Another one 884 damage and 3 kills....and was in general racking up the most damage overall most games....usually 1-2 kills even if my team lost (of which none were 'lasthits' but were all 100-0% facerips). Most matches over 500 damage easy.

ECM hasn't changed a thing for people that used heat mode primarily. ECM is way overrated it doesn't add any more damage and you should know where the enemy team is already before engaging.

Oh and dragons still blow I killed 2 on the way to capping the enemy base (killed a Raven there too) to win a 8v8 game last night.

Unless you are godly in your medium, they are useless when it comes to the ECM brawl in 8 on 8. Heavies and assaults can typically soak up alot more damage and give more back. If you prefer mediums, Pug or run a 4 player group.

I've been running a 4sp in 8v8 and holding my own. I think people underestimate the balance of speed, damage and survivability a well-fit medium provides. You can't go heads up vs an atlas gun line, but you can cover a whole lot more ground. Basically you're fast enough to outmaneuver anything you can't kill. Being able to rtb, brawl and cap all in one game is a potent combo. If it does come down to a punch-up you should stick and move, staying out of the enemy kill zone. If they run too heavy outflank and cap. Mediums really do provide utility and flexibility to just about any comp.

There is only one medium mech in the game right now and that is Dragon... and the advnaced Centurion variant, which I've seen none of.

I think mostly people are not play mediums as much since the ECM mechs are the flavor of the month, and this will probably continue until the newness wares off, then things should normalize a bit.

It will continue until ECM is nerfed. It's not the "newness" of it but the overeffectiveness of the ECM that makes ECM mechs preferable on any team.

How about a little bit of both? :)
Yea, I do agree that ECM does need some adjusting, especially not disabling BAP completely.
BAP still needs to have some effect especially if the BAPper is not within the range of the ECM.

2 ECM cicadas and 6 Atlas D-DC with ECM is all you need. Everything else is inferior.
