It was fun, to a point.

My main gripe was the dumbing down. I mean, for someone who played GAUNTLET on the Commodore 64 the only difference is the graphics.

-They removed customization of attributes (which affects strategy)
-They removed a skill tree (which also removes strategy of play)
-They added a primary attribute for the "class" (which locks the character in a role)

That's the tip of the iceberg. By creatign these classes and essentially locking them down I could suddenly not create something similar from D2 - the full-auto-exploding-crossbow-X300% attack speed-Assassin with Irathas Finery.

The similarity would have been a witch hunter using a blowpipe from the shaman but doing it WELL.

Now it reminds me more of a shinier Gauntlet game where my options as a player got far more limited.

They took a well executed formula and CHANGED it instead of IMPROVING it.

Bluten you are totally wrong:
First of all they are ninja patching the Server Netcode a lot ( From Germany i got a good impression on that)

Secoundly today MWO gets something more important than anything else: An Adversary.
Hawken will be released today. It's a fast Cryengine 3 based shooter which will attrac lot of
Heavy Gear etc Fans.

This will leave PGI with a Choice: Compete against Hawken and trying to speed up the game and going for MORE brawling, which the Mechwarrior Merchandise is unsuited, or trying to attract the more stractic players by getting the Pace out, making long range Engangements more Viable etc.

Atm they had been on the wrong side of the Road, Merchandise Based they never can compete with Hawken, so they need to be totally different.

Eve-online is a great Game but for a lot of gamers it died because it had no adversary,
so it draw ALL players group Strategic Space Jockeys and Tactical fast Fighterpilots,
like MWO did with Mechshooter and Mechsimplayers, and the Producers had the Choice
of favouring one group....
So will it happen here sooner or later
but now a short Advise PGI:

Hawken is layed out as a fast Mechshooter, Mechwarrior can't be realy thanks to the Merchandise,
so please don't try it. Make MWO the Mechsim it was supposed to be !

As the Crowd sticking to MWO will be middle aged Gamers and they have lot of Money,
the young gamers will pay lot less but are more.

Or you know, they are a very small development team unlike Valve or SONY for DOTA2 and Planetside 2.

I would instead say that they might have:
-Been too optimistic in their development cycle
-Taken on a bigger project than they could chew

Still, spring 2013 is what they have said so I'll hold my judgement until then and playtest the game as a beta tester.

Some of those titles there I see are great games, some are not, but I can tell you that MWO in its current state deserves no awards. The fact that the other MP Shooter games that MWO would compete with on the list are also in beta does nothing to help MWO's image.

Lets see...

Planetary Enviroments
-Urban
-Desert
-Mountain
-Tundra
-Jungle
-Archipelago (think Hawaii island chain)
-Swamps
-Caves
-Asteroids
-Orbital Stations

That's 10 maps. Now we add 4 maps per environment, that's 40 maps. Let's add weather patterns to flesh out the maps.

Weather
-Fog (light/heavy)
-Rain (light/heavy)
-Snow/Sandstorm
-Regular Weather (cloudy/sunny)

Now, weather can be added regardless of map so that's a potential 320 'different' maps.

That should cover most community warfare scenarios.

We can also flesh this out.

Enviromental
Gravity (low/normal/high)

Now we have a potential 960 different scenarios with 40 basic maps.

You're right that they did change it. Most D2 builds were essentially one, maybe 2 trick ponies. Hammerdin's, meteorb sorc's, Bone Necro's.... And for the longest time, no re-specs. So if a patch came along making your build less OP or even not play the way you want, well, tough.

Change isn't always a bad thing.

I was never one for trick ponies and built things outside the box.

The problem now is that their change was essentially to give everyone one trick ponies so that one couldnt even TRY to make something FUN.

Everything is the same so it's essentially gauntlet.

And that's a valid stance for you personally to take. However, you cannot in good faith ask others to do the same. The game has for all intents and purposes (that are realistic in the F2P space) released. PGI can slap the Beta tag on it till the cows come home but that does not make them invulnerable to valid criticism.

Warning!!! pedantic whining ahead - this game is in the Alpha stage really. It's not a Beta by any stretch of the imagination.

  • Hawken has NO right to be there. Barely anyone has played it, jsut getting into open beta now. Claiming a game in closed beta to be one of the best games of the year is very unprofessional.
  • Dota 2 is a far more mature Beta than MWO
  • It's that guy's personal opinion. To say that a company is failing because it's not on one random *****'s GOTY list is tantamount to claiming that 99% of games are absolute failures, because they're not on that list. That list does contain some games I enjoyed immensely this year, but many more that I and many others enjoyed just as much are absent. Your comment is sensationalist.

I actually don't understand this particular argument. Because when Mechwarrior 2 and Mercs came out, everyone I knew was playing it. Of course I have no idea how commercially successful it was at the time but I figured that my circle was indicative of the overall trend.

i dont see problem they arent on that list. And personaly i liked diablo 3 sorta but that game was just getting completly broken every patch till september which personaly really discouraged me from playing it more. Even i liked it till some point but after lowering difficulty all the time i didnt find any point why to play it and try to beat something when i can only wait for nerf.
For this game, I play it like a month maybe, and so far i like it. There are some issues like in every game but i have hopes it will be sorted at some point.
Personaly have problem with pricing in this game, paying for color real money every time u want to use it or change it i found quite tricky. I think MC bought colors, camos should be unlocked and then payed only with CB. I would welcome some new modes and bigger maps.
