Do You Like To Specialize Mechs, Or Have Mechs That Play Multiple Roles?

With the new stalker variant and it's incredible number of hardpoints, I was wondering if other people were going to add only weapons that play one role or add multiple different weapons to it.

Of course this would be based on your current playstyle. Some like to be a jack of all trades, some like to only shoot at long range, or brawl.

So how do you specialize your mechs? Do you have 1 mech for each type of role, or perhaps even multiple mechs that can fill any role?

Note: I'd make this a poll if I was not scared to disable no-script on firefox (after the mishap today)

Specialization is always better, if you are able to put yourself in a position to use your specialty.

My current favourite is a jack of all trades. 4 LL, JJs and 70km/h phract with full armor does a lot of things well but nothing spectacularly.

When i get my stalkers ill be building sniper/brawlers like they're going out of style (cause they might well be).
I'll be tinkering with an LRM boat, SRM boat, LL boat and PPC boat with supporting weapons if i can fit them.

Specialize - jack of all trades machines are mediocre at all trades.

oh I can sympathize with that build!  Having a fast mech with infinite ammo that can 1-shot someones cockpit is incredibly dirty.  I run one myself, but not the 3d, the 1x.  I'd love to have the 3d, but I don't have the patience to save up large amounts of money.

I like making my mechs flexible. If I run into an Atlas I want the firepower to defend myself. If I have a circling light I want the lasers/missles to fend him off. I don't like specialising in one thing.

I love multi-role jack-of-all-trades Mechs armed with an assortment of weapons designed for different uses and purposes. And this I feel is what Mechwarrior has always been about. Just like modern-day warships have different weapons for different jobs, you'd only really ever rely on one set at any given moment of an engagement.

I'm happy to say this largely still exists in MWO which is a great improvement over a month or two ago when it was all about boating one weapon type. Haven't seen much of that lately.

I am more for the generalist role with a diversity of multiple tools to use but atm the game forces you to focus more.

combat effectiveness depends on your team structure. if you're rolling with friends, you can specialize, otherwise it's valuable to have a more flexible build to adapt.

Don't matter, I simply have to enjoy piloting the mech, a good build does this. Not any particular roll that it plays.

I like general mechs, or multi range mechs, My main currently, my atlas has 3 ranges, ac/5 for out to around 600-700 where aiming starts to degrade, 500- where my damag from those is maximum, and under 300 where my mediums start to be very effective and my streaks are almost able to impace, when they are within 200 they are under a constant barrage of all my weapons, with enough heat dissipation that I rarely need to stop firing even my lasers.

2things though, ammo and heat are things which I hate to worry about, so I stock up on both, dissipation and extra ammo. my ecm keeps my streaks running, and my ac/5 can keep shooting despite any outside factors.

I'm doing very well with jack of all trades builds and I have more fun playing them too.

Tis similar to the Aeon/Cybran/Uef thing of Supreme Commander. Personally I like to go the Aeon route: do one thing and do it really well. However that's with a team to complement your strengths and compensate for weaknesses. Going solo I'll use a more versatile build.

I tend to try and engineer my mechs so that if "X" happens my mech becomes useless.

Take my Atlas RS....Built for med range Strikes not close brawls but if someone closes the gap with it....it can still chain fire 4 Large Lasers and start hitting the SRM6 and Gauss without to many heat problems. At least until someone distracts the enemy off or it dies.

I currently have two Commando 2-Ds. One is a standard streak build that I use for pugs. The other uses SRM6 and SRM4 it's a specialized mech for attacking Mediums to Assaults when I play in groups.

good on ya a more positive post X) i think both specialised and mix role mechs have theirplace like stugs and panzas. artillery battries and soldiers. they all have a role to play and MWO will be better the more it makes more roles viable.
